The way you use JAWS will not be much different. The only thing you might have to change is to go into the JAWS settings and set your caps lock key to act as an insert key if your laptop does not have a number pad. Otherwise, things will look just as you remember from your desktop.

I don't know if you might consider using an external keyboard? That way nothing will change.

Or attaching a USB numpad, which covers the key that are probably missing from the device's keypad. Much easier to carry. As I understand it, the caps lock substitutes for most insert-based commands, but not all.

have the context menu key. I have used a utility to remap the print screen key to perform that function but it is certainly not as convenient as a proper context menu key. My guess, however, is that a windows 7 laptop is probably old enough that it would have this key, so long as you are talking about a full size laptop and not a compact model. Depending on how you intend to use it, maybe not many changes at all. I say

that because I am not sure if you plan on using a desktop keyboard with it, or a Bluetooth keyboard. Some models have the number pad on them, so I'm not sure if your new laptop will or not. If you choose to use the laptop layout, the JAWS key, or the insert key will be the capslock key. You will also find a list of laptop keystrokes in the JAWS help menu. Good luck! -----Original Message-----

Soronel, I'm sure you know this, but shift-F10 does the same thing, just for the record.

Actually I was not aware of that one. <Chagrin>.

Still not as nice as a real context menu key. Probably not even as nice as my remapped print screen since it requires hitting two keys. Prior to this laptop I had not even encountered a laptop with an actual print screen key, it has always been an Fn key combo before (the print screen key takes the place of a second ins key next to the del in the row that makes up the normal six-pack). What is even more frustrating is that this laptop is slightly wider than my prior one so the space is there, but the keyboard is smashed into a narrower area. It simply has pretty large margins to the left and right of the keyboard. On 6/4/15, Adrian Spratt via Jfw <jfw@...> wrote:

They both work well, except that one doesn't work from the bed. Smile.

I just use Shift plus F10 for a context key.

Hi, Dennis, I am also a Jaws16 laptop home user with Window7 ,but I use the desktop keyboard because the laptop keyboard is small,my desk is tall, and my fingers are too big for the laptop keyboard , so I recommend you switch from one to the other and go with the one that is best for you . that is very informative. thank you very much. i am going to get a usb keyboard so i can stay with the desktop layout. i am not going to be using this machine as a primary computer so i really don't wan't to have to memorize all the other keystrokes for jaws that seam quite different on a laptop. thanks for your input.

Question? Why would one by a laptop computer, then use a desktop keyboard? Why not just get a desktop from the beginning? I'm not challenging doing that, just wanting to know what is the advantage. Thanks.

Portability, fitting both laptop and keyboard in computer bag. Takes up less space. Gives off less heat. Quieter running. Has own speakers. That's just off the top of my head without much thought.

Portability. You can't just pick up and take your desktop with you if the

need or desire arises. You can always disconnect the keyboard from the laptop if need be. Also, if you do a lot of work on the lapttop, it's probably just more convenient to have a full keyboard. -----Original Message-----
