Jaws And Anti-virus

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

You may recall that, a few days ago, I was having trouble with a program on
my computer running in the background, and interfering with Jaws.

Originally, I thought the problem was with Java.

Apparently, the problem was not with Java, but was with the latest version
of the AVG anti-virus software. I think the version number is AVG 15.

Last night, an AVG update occurred, which literally made Jaws totally
unusable.

I've now completely uninstalled AVG, and Jaws works perfectly.

Has anyone else had this problem with AVG, and if so, how did you deal with
it?

If AVG is not the most Jaws-friendly anti-virus program to be using with
Jaws, does someone have recommendations for a more Jaws-friendly anti-virus
program?

I'd prefer to stick with free anti-virus software if possible.

Any help would be appreciated, since I am not comfortable running this
computer without anti-virus software.

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this windows 7 computer.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Hi Tom. I have a blind friend who uses a program called Avira. It is free
from what I understand. Just a suggestion. From what I have heard about
AVG, you made a good decision to get rid of that program. It has caused
problems for friends of mine who use JAWS. Hope this helps!

I've heard of the name, but recollect that it was prone to triggering false positives for things that were be nine and lacked screen reader accessibility. that was some time ago but I don't know if it has changed for the better. I heard it is accessible with NVDA but don't know to what extent.

I have Avira on both my laptop and desktop, and I like it because unlike
most antivirus programs, it does not use a lot of computer resources.
Consequently, it doesn't impact overall system performance. The only
problem is that it has recently become inaccessible because it no longer
runs in a normal window. Fortunately, I don't have to mess with its
interface, as it seems to block potential threats automatically.

Hello, everyone.

You may recall that, a few days ago, I was having trouble with a
program on my computer running in the background, and interfering with
Jaws.

Originally, I thought the problem was with Java.

Apparently, the problem was not with Java, but was with the latest
version of the AVG anti-virus software. I think the version number is
AVG
15.

Last night, an AVG update occurred, which literally made Jaws totally
unusable.

I've now completely uninstalled AVG, and Jaws works perfectly.

Has anyone else had this problem with AVG, and if so, how did you deal
with it?

If AVG is not the most Jaws-friendly anti-virus program to be using
with Jaws, does someone have recommendations for a more Jaws-friendly
anti-virus program?

I'd prefer to stick with free anti-virus software if possible.

Any help would be appreciated, since I am not comfortable running this
computer without anti-virus software.

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this windows 7 computer.

I don't remember any accessibility problems, but it once quarantined my
volume control! I discontinued using it when I began experiencing update
problems, but would consider trying it again.

I've heard of the name, but recollect that it was prone to triggering false
positives for things that were be nine and lacked screen reader
accessibility. that was some time ago but I don't know if it has changed for
the better. I heard it is accessible with NVDA but don't know to what
extent.

Does it compare favorably to something like AVG?

Hi Tom. I have a blind friend who uses a program called Avira. It is
free from what I understand. Just a suggestion. From what I have
heard about AVG, you made a good decision to get rid of that program.
It has caused problems for friends of mine who use JAWS. Hope this helps!
