Necessity For Java?
Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.
I am posting this quiry to both the JFW list, and the Jaws users list, so I hope this is ok. My question is as follows: How necessary is Java for today's computer applications? I seem to be having a problem with constant updates slowing down my computer, and getting in the way of Jaws, and am seriously considering uninstalling Java. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm not an expert by any means but I uninstalled it quite a while back and haven't had an issue. Besides this, all the hoopla about how unsecure it is made me get rid of it. You just don't need it unless you have applications that require it. Why bother with it if you don't have anything that uses it.

Could those issues with IE be dealt with effectively by just switching to

Hi,
I have two Windows seven sixty four bit laptops. One has never had java and one has not had Java for about a year now. I have never had issues except once when trying to install a second screen reader for kicks only to use as a backup and it for some unknown reason wanted to install Java Bridge and kept looking for Java. After I got through the install though everything went fine and it never looked for Java again. I had one small web app that used java but I just switched to something that did not use Java and I was good to go. It wasn't that jaws friendly anyway so I was glad to see it go. Hope that helps. Hi, Tom. I personally have Java, and it is helpful for some sites, such as those where one puts in a zip code to get a location of a restaurant. It is also helpful for some sites which test Internet speed.

But generally, it isn't needed all that often. Besides, if you suddenly find you need it, it is easily found and reinstalled. Bill White billwhite92701@...

Not if you want to use the sites I mentioned earlier which need Java. There is a Firefox-specific Java application on the Oracle website.

I would rather listen to streaming audio via a default player like

windows media or real player. But many streaming audio, (especially major sites like IHEART media, require some sort of web-based player. So if you use your computer for streaming audio it might be good to leave java installed. I'm not a tech person, but I have found that sometimes small changes you make in a set-up can have consequences you might not know about for a while. So I would somehow turn off the up-dates but not uninstall it unless you're sure that you don't need it for the programs you use. Regards, Ryan Coverdell from Montana

Tom, does your job require you to use things like Blackboard? I know at one time Java was a key component of using Blackboard. I never had to do it, but I knew people who did.

I may well re-install Java, once I solve my anti-virus software issue here, because of what you have suggested. I'll get back in touch if I need more assistance on the Java re-install. Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan
