That doesn't help if Jaws has stopped speaking as opposed to stopped

Hello! If JAWS stops speaking you can try this using JAWS 15, and up.

Press Jaws Key plus Windows key plus F4. I've used this with a lot of success. You may get a window asking you to send an error report. You can choose to send it or not. If you do, the code is sent to Freedom Scientific. Hope this helps!
