youtube, accessibility, was; Examples of inaccessible and accessible web sites?

Dennis Clark <dennis@...>

Hello Michael,
Using Jaws, how do you rewind and fast forward Youtube videos when they are playing. Using the Jaws curser, I can find the play and mute buttons, but not rewind and fast forward. Have you found a way to do this, perhaps using the keyboard?
Thanks

Content preview: matthew; what is confusing about the main youtube page? I
do a search for the video i want on youtube.com, then navigate the search
results by headings, pressing enter on the video i want to watch… I also use
the youtube built in video capturing abilities found at http://youtube.com/upload
granted, i’ve only gotten this function to work in IE 11, and not firefox,
however it still works and has helped me upload over 100 videos to my personal
youtube: http://youtube.com/myownpay/ that you can go to and navigate all
of my videos, by using heading navigation… Hears a document that might help
with youtube main page navigation with keystrokes as well; i don’t use these
my self, however i might start just to speed up my youtube navigation: document

I truly am curious what people have problems with regarding navigating the
youtube site. thanks [...]

hello Russell,
You could start by demonstrating how fiendishly confusing the main Youtube interface is. It is true that we have the accessible youtube page ( at http://tube.majestyc.net/?s=skip+to+the+good+bit )
but the latter doesn't seem to be fully functional all the time. for example, sometimes the search results display, no matter how many times you refresh and redraw the thing.
Apologies if this isn't exactly what you're looking for, it nevertheless should be a good example of how not to design a website for optimum screen reader access.

Hi all,

I’ll be co-presenting next week to a class of students regarding accessibility of websites and writing for the web.

I’d like to demo some really accessible websites, and some really inaccessible websites. Can anyone suggest some accessible sites, and some inaccessible sites with any or all of the following issues…
Unlabelled forms
Unlabelled images
Multiple unlabelled buttons
Pages with links with labels like “”click here”
Pages with Captchas
Pages with very poor visual contrast
Websites that only work in one browser

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

and the query below is an example of the sort of limitation the main interface of youtube imposes on screen reader users. Without wishing to labour the point, it's important to remember that while some users may be content with a small subset of functionality offred by the site, there are others whose particular requirements necessitate greater level of accessibility to the UI.

In answer to the query, sometimes, and I stress, only sometimes, with cursor focused in the Flash object, the left and right arrow keys perform rewind and fast forward, and the up and down arrows increase and reduce volume, in that order.
Sincerely, Matthew
