computer compatibility with JAWS

Barbara Hansen <the2skibears@...>

Hello JAWS users,

I am new to this list and already learning great ideas. In mid-December, I
was pleased to receive input from some of you regarding recommendations when
purchasing a computer. I plan to heed those suggestions.

I will attempt to make my question brief. Currently, I am using a Dell
laptop, which is about 5 years old. It came with VISTA, which I never liked.
Last year, with help from someone, I upgraded this computer to Windows 8,
because it was cheaper than paying to upgrade to windows 7. I do not really
have any problem with windows 8, however; I can't seem to get the Internet
Explorer for my browser any more. I am currently using Google Chrome. Now,
for some reason, I cannot enter on a link within an email and go directly to
Google Chrome. I have even tried copying the link, then go to my web browser
and pasting it there, but it doesn't work. According to a technology
specialist with services for the blind, there is an incompatible issues
going on with this computer. We tried several times to reload Internet
Explorer, but it just doesn't work.

If any of you have had problems in this area or have any solutions, your
suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year to all of you,

Barbara Hansen

It sounds like you need to completely wipe your hard drive and
re-install Windows. The dirty little secret about Windows is that it
often needs to be re-installed on a computer every three to five years
or so.

Hi Barbara,

my best bet is your Internet Explorer is set to the modern app style rather than the desktop version.
Windows 8 and 8.1 have what they used to call metro apps, modern looking interfaces arranged in a special way to make them visually more appealing.
However, you can have the desktop version of Internet Explorer appear. Go into the run dialogue by hitting Windows key + r. In the edit combo, type iexplore, which will bring up Internet Explorer.
Now comes the part where you will need to set this desktop version as your default every time you start up IE.
I am not exactly sure about the English names, but you will have to look under tools, then Internet Options, Programms tab.
There will be two options you need to change, one something like "open links in Internet Explorer Desktop" and the other "Open Tiles on the Desktop". These need to be checked. Once done, you can hit OK, and your Internet Explorer should be back to normal.

Regards,
Nermin

I agree with the person who said you were probably having problems because of the new and unimproved Internet Explorer for Windows 8, and choosing the Desktop version would probably solve your IE problem. Having said that, due to a series of random issues with Internet Explorer, I have just made Mozilla Firefox my default browser. In Windows 7, it feels almost exactly like I'm using Internet Explorer in terms of JAWS. The virtual cursor works the same; JAWS find, Links list, etc. all function the same way. The big difference is that in IE, pressing Control O will give you a place to type the address of a website you want, and in Firefox it's Control L. Otherwise, it really was a relatively minor change. I didn't realize Chrome was accessible--the last time I tried using it was a disaster. If you set Firefox as your default browser (which it prompts you to do when you install it), it will open links from your Email.

Hope that helps,
Brad Martin

you can also use

alt+d

to get to the address field, which is the same across for both browsers.

Actually, I now use control-l in IE, as well as in Firefox, to type in the address for a new webpage. It works in both.
