Brian:

Have you any idea what the maximum amout of memory your computer can hold?

since you've had your computer, have you run any of the Windows utilities,
such as CHKDSK, Disk Cleanup and Defrag?

note1: You should run CHKDSk first, with the /f switch. The procedure for
doing this is:

1. Press WINDOWS KEY+R, to open the "Run" dialog.

2. Type the following command:

chkdsk c: /f

then press ENTER.

A dialog is displayed, telling you the type of disk format, that the disk
cannot be locked, that chkdsk cannot run, because the volume is in use by
another process and asking you if you want chkdsk to run the next time the
system staarts. The choices are Y for Yes and N for No.

Note3: If you chose Y for Yes and restarted your system and, chkdsk has
performed whatever was necessary, if anything and, you are back at the
desktop, you should next run the disk Clean Up utility.

Having chosen the drive and the program has scanned the drive, you are
presented with a list of check boxes. Check the boxes for the items you want
cleaned, TAB to the OK button and Press ENTER. You are then prompted as to
whether you wish to proceed. Yes is highlighted by default. Press ENTER to
begin the clean up process.

if you have never run the Disk Clean Up utility since you got your computer,
it can take a very long time for the program to complete its tasks, the
first time you use it. However, if you use Disk Clean Up on a regular basis,
for example, once a week on the same day, the amount of time it takes for
the program to perform its tasks, can be very short.

Note2: You can schedule Defrag to defrag your hard drive on a regular basis.

Do you have any antispamware or antispyware software installed on your
system?

Do you have a program, such as CCleaner installed, to clear your system of
old files, such as: certain cookies; temporary files; temporary internet
files and other files created by Windows in each successive Windows session.

CCleaner can also clean up your registry.

What size is the swap file on your system? Have you changed it since you got
your computer. Below, are instructions to change the size of the Swap File
"pagefile.sys", in Windows 7.

To check the current size of the swap file (pagefile.sys) or modify its
size, in Windows 7, follow the steps below:

1. Tap the WINDOWS KEY, to open the start menu and enter the Windows 7
Search function.

2. In the search edit field, type:

memory

A window opens which should contain at least the following items:

Windows Memory Diagnostic
Control Panel (4)
How to change the size of virtual memory Diagnose your computer's memory
problems show how much RAM is on this computer Check the Windows Index See
More Results

3. Tap the DOWN ARROW, until "How to change the size of virtual memory" is
highlighted and press ENTER, to open it.

4. A Windows Help and Support window opens. You can either choose to read
the information in the window or, , you can choose to tap the TAB key, until
you get to a link, which is labeled "Click to Open System". Press ENTER, to
open it.

5. A window opens in Control Panel, containing several options.

6. Tap the TAB key, until you get to a link called, "Advanced System
Settings". Press ENTER, to open it.

7. The Advanced Systems Properties dialog box in Control Panel opens and you
are placed in the Advanced Tab. By default, the Settings option within the
Advanced Tab Page should be highlighted. Verify this by using the JAWS Read
Current Line or Say Current Word commands. If Settings is not the object
which has focus, tap the TAB key, until it is. Press ENTER, to open the
Settings option.

8. The Visual Effects Tab Page opens. Press SHIFT+TAB, to move back to the
Visual Effects TAB.

9. Tap the RIGHT ARROW once, to move to the Advanced Tab Page.

10. Tap the TAB key twice, to move to the "Virtual Memory Change" option.
Press ENTER, to open it.

11. Automatically Manage paging size for all drives is highlighted. This
option is checked by default. If you wish to enter user defined settings for
the swap file, tap the SPACE BAR, to uncheck the check box.

Note: On this page, near the bottom of the screen, you will find the
following items regarding the Windows memory settings for a particular
system:

Minimum Allowed:
Recommended:
Current allocated:

To obtain the values for these settings, use the JAWS cursor or Invisible
cursor. With either cursor active, tap the PAGE DOWN key, to move the cursor
to the bottom of the screen. Tap the UP ARROW key, 3 times. JAWS will say,
"Minimum Allowed:", followed by the value. Tap the DOWN ARROW KEY, JAWS will
say, "Recommended:", followed by the value. Tap the DOWN ARROW key, JAWS
will say "Currently Allocated:", followed by the value. Tap the PC cursor
key to return to the system/PC cursor.

12. Tap the TAB key twice, to move to a combo box, called, "Paging Size for
each Drive". By default, System Managed Size is checked

13. If you want to change the size of the Swap File "pagefile.sys", tap the
UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW, until "Custom Size" is checked.

14. Tap the TAB key once, to move to the "initial Size" edit field.

If the total installed memory is 4 GB and, you wish to set the Initial size
of the swap file to 4 GB, type the value 4096, into the edit field.

If the total installed memory is 4 GB and, you wish to expand the Initial
size of the swap file by 2 times the total installed memory, type the
value, 8192, into the edit field.

If the total installed memory is 4 GB and, you wish to expand the Initial
size of the swap file by 2 1/2 times the total installed memory, type the
value, 10240, into the edit field.

If the total installed memory is 4 GB and, you wish to expand the Initial
size of the swap file by 3 times the total installed memory, type the value,
12288, into the edit field.

15. Tap the TAB key once, to move to the "Maximum Size" edit field.

If the total installed memory is 4 GB and, you wish to set the maximum size
of the swap file to 4 GB, 2 times the total memory, 2 1/2 times the total
memory, 3 times the total memory, use the appropriate values above.

16. Tap the TAB key once, to move to the "Paging file size for each drive,
set button". Tap the SPACE BAR, to accept the values you entered in the 2
edit fields.

17. TAB to the OK button and press the SPACE BAR or ENTER key to close the
dialog box. You will be returned to the previous Tab Page.

18. Again, TAB to the OK button and press the ENTER key to close the page.

19. There is one more dialog box to close, TAB to the OK button and press
ENTER, to close it.

20. You should now be on the opening page of Control Panel. Press ALT+F4, to
close Control Panel.

21. Finally, you should be on the initial Help System Page, Press ALT+F4, to
close the window.

22. After all that, you should be back on the Desktop.

I have tested the above instructions and, as far as I can tell, they are
100% accurate.

The above instructions, may or may not work, in Windows Vista and Windows 8.

If they do, please let us know.

HTH

The subject line says it. Just a few more details are that I'm using jaws
15, but even earlier versions take a long time to load.
I got this computer in 2011 and here are some general specs pulled from
the
properties window.

Is this not enough computer to handle jaws?

I'm running JAWS on a netbook, considerably less powerful than your computer, and it runs fine. Load time is probably a combination of the size of JAWS, which continues to increase with each version, and the number of other programs and services that load before JAWS. It has been suggested that you prevent unnecessary programs from loading by using MSConfig. The problem is how to determine which programs are unnecessary.

Looks like a powerful enough CPU and memory to me.

Maybe you have too many things loading up before Windows starts.

Try this:
Windows+R
Type: msconfig
Enter
Ctrl Tab to the startup page
arrow down that list and uncheck anything that you don't think you need --
and that could be everything except JAWS.

See if that helps.
