Yes my computer is messed up and I'm promised that it will be replaced, but
in the mean time all of a sudden all my documents are being saved as read only. I tried renaming one only to have it turn up read only. I also copied and pasted it into a new document. Any ideas? Hello Judith,
You will probably have to go into the properties for each file, and uncheck "read only" on the general tab until you can get your computer replaced. As far as I know, there is no global way to make all files save as not read only. that must be aggravating to have happen. Good luck, Mike -------------------------------------------------- From: "Judith Bron" <jbron@...> Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2013 7:52 AM To: "'The Jaws for Windows support list.'" <jfw@...> Subject: read only Yes my computer is messed up and I'm promised that it will be replaced, butRegards, Michael Boyd mikeboyd61@... Is it possible you have a bug? Not all viruses do unspeakable, horrible things. Some just do weird things. I remember one several years ago that turned every document into a template. What version of Office? Word 2010 will let you remove the protection on a document by document basis. This may be small comfort, if it turns around and saves as read-only again, but at least you could edit it.

It may be possible to uncheck all files using tanmsdos command like xcopy. I don't remember how, but you might find the way through Google.

That's a good old DOS command that probably goes back to the beginning of the IBM PC. It's been around since at least DOS 3. It sets the archive bit on or off, and determines whether a file is read-only or editable. Plus turns the attribute on, dash turns it off.

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
No, no. It's a DOS command, and must be run either from the run command, or from a dos box. I recommend the latter. Just go to run, and type or choose "command." That will place you at an old-fashioned DOS prompt, from which you can issue the attrib command. When you're through, just type "exit," and you'll be back where you were.
