Getting to the JAWS start-up menu

Ed Marquette <marquette.ed@...> #19990 Ed Marquette]] I know I've done this before, but cannot now remember how. With a regular keyboard (one with a numeric keypad), one can reach the Jaws menu with insert key plus j. On a Windows 7 (or earlier machine), JAWS key plus F-11 will produce a system tray from which one can activate the Jaws menu. The Jaws key plus F-11 doesn't work in Windows 8, and I have only one working JAWS key on this laptop (the capslock key). So, in laptop mode (with the keyboard) Capslock plus j simulates a mouse action. Any ideas how to get to the Jaws menu when Jaws is set to run in the system tray? This is not urgent. I can just plug in an external keyboard temporarily, but one would think there ought to be a way. Perhaps my real problem is the inability to get to the system tray in Windows 8. Adrian Spratt #19991 Ed, The MS keystroke to reach the system tray is Windows key+b. I know Jaws is running in the system tray because I always run it that way. Still, despite having a list of nearly 20 things in the system tray, JAWS isn't there. Adrian Spratt #20013 Ed, I'm using Win7, but like you, I found when I set it up that a number of icons in my system tray were not being read. I'm rushing now, but below I'll copy notes I made to myself on how to make system tray icons visible to JAWS. FYI, David Bailes addresses this question in his Win7 guides, and no doubt also in his materials on Win8. So, here are instructions that I made to myself that apply to Win7: System tray, how to reveal hidden icons. Open start menu properties with Win key, escape, alt-enter. In the first dialog, tab to and press the Notification Area Customize button. I found that the list of options appears when I shit-tabbed once, then. The first item there is always turn on all icons, on which I pressed the spacebar, then tabbed to Okay. Note. If one highlights and then presses space on the notification chevron, one gets a much longer list of programs in the system tray. After restarting my computer, Jaws appeared in the system tray. Consequently, I didn't have to customize, though the customization option is available. I navigated to Jaws in the system tray, thereby highlighting it. Then, I hit the applications key, and made the required adjustments. Worked beautifully. BTW, I lost the automatically start Jaws settings when I installed Jaws 15. Jury is still out on Jaws 15. But, it cannot bbe worse than Jaws 13. Can it? Thanks for all the tips. By the way, it is good to be back on the list. I was off for nearly a year, but got back about a month ago.
