shrinking white space on a braille display

Philip Hall <p.hall.eml1@...>

I am using a focus 80 display with jaws 14 or jaws 15.

I have been searching in the settings center, and in quick settings for a
way to reduce the amount of white space being displayed.

Some of the lines I am viewing are quite long with a great deal of white
space between items.

Does anyone know of a setting that would remove most of the white space?

I looked at structured mode, and at the panning options. None of these look
as if they will do what I want.

Thanks

Phil

I haven't found line of text. is this a setting you have seen in one of the
jaws settings, or are you referring to modifying a script?

Using Keyboard Manager, locate and, if necessary, assign a key to the script:

well, this is a setting that is on my alva 380 80 cell terminal by pressingstatus cell touch dot. i line text on display or show as on screen. when i have my alva in line of text on display, all of the extra spaces are removed and the text is compressed. when i switch it to show text as on screen, it then shows me what it looks like to the sighted person.

Hi.
Thanks for your help. With your pointers, and someone else's hints. I was
able to assign a key to
BrailleSetUnlimitedPixelsPerSpace
This did the trick.
And yes, it does say "line up text on display" when I activate the key
stroke I assigned to the script.

Many thanks to everyone.

Hi Phil,

The thing about the BrailleSetUnlimitedPixelsPerSpace script is that it's one-way. You push the key and it sets it to unlimited (actually 999) pixels per space, but the only way to turn that off is to restart Jaws. Kind of clumsy imho. if you use the Toggle script, BrailleToggle8PixelsPerSpace, you can turn on and off the shrinking just by repeatedly pressing that key.

Just a thought,

Hi.
I tried the BrailleToggle8PixelsPerSpace, and no matter how many times I
pressed the key that I assigned, the white space did not shrink.
I'll give it another try however.

Thanks

Phil

Hi Phil,

I just tried it and it works fine for me. Does speech say "line up text" (sic) and "as on screen"? Perhaps you assigned the key to one keyboard table but are testing it with another. You probably want to assign it to the default table so it'll always be available.

Have fun,

Hi.
Yes, when I assign a key to
"BrailleSet8PixelsPerSpace" and I press the key that I assigned, speech does
say "as on screen", and On the braille display it shows "show text as on
screen".
I did assign the key using the default table.
No matter how many times I press the key, only the above message is briefly
displayed on the display, then the display goes back to showing me the
original text, with all the original white space.
Now, if I assign a key to
"BrailleSetUnlimitedPixelsPerSpace"
Each time I press the key, it toggles on or off.
I don't know if this makes much of a difference, but I am using this with
the Jaws cursor, and Jaws 15.

Thanks.
Phil

This is strange. I'm testing in Keyboard Manager, pointing it at the default key table.

When the Jaws cursor is active, BrailleToggle8PixelsPerSpace (hereafter called the Toggle script) does collapse and uncollapse the line, so when it says Line Up Text the left-hand column, with the key table names, is next to the righthand column with the keys and assignments. When using the PC cursor there is no movement on the display but this is caused by the Structured Line which defeats the action of the script. When I switch into line mode the Toggle script similarly makes a difference when the PC cursor is active.

Using BrailleSetUnlimitedPixelsPerSpace (the Set script), speech always says Line Up Text. Once this is on it stays on no matter how many times the script is invoked. I'm pretty sure switching tasks turns it off but once it's on again it stays on.

This is using Jaws 14, reading the screen of Keyboard Manager. In line mode it collapses the line with either the Jaws or PC cursor. In Structured Mode, when the display is on the Structured Line it makes no difference when using the PC cursor. When using the Jaws cursor, or when using the PC cursor and the display is not on the Structured Line, it collapses the line but once collapsed the line stays collapsed.

I'm using the braille display from a PAC Mate (not the whole PAC Mate itself). I've changed the left whiz wheel to invoke BraillePriorLine and BrailleNextLine so I can get out of the Structured Line when I want to. With your Focus there may be a way to get out of the Structured Line; if not, you might consider using the Braille Prior and Next Line scripts as getting away from the Structured Line can be a distinct advantage at times.

This is fun! I wonder what can account for the differences the two of us see. Is it Jaws 14 vs. 15?

Have fun,
