System image and anti-virus software for Windows 8

Niall Gallagher

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a system image /backup and anti virus software solution compatible with JAWS and Windows 8.
I have asked people who recommended Norton Ghost, but on investigation it is not compatible with Windows 8.
Also, I have used Avast in the past for a anti virus solution, so I'm just curious is there anything better?

I am seeking this information because I am purchasing a new laptop for my Masters programme and I want to future proof it.

Any information /suggestions are very welcome.

Kind regards,

Niall

I'm assuming you wish to back up the system files in case of a major melt
down.
I just bought an hp laptop and just backed up my system files for just such
an emergency.
I'm trying to think of the utility I used and as soon as I find it, I'll let
you know.
It worked just fine; I had to use the Jaws cursor to navigate a bit but as
soon as the process started, it worked just fine.
As far as a virus protection system, I'm currently using Avast which has
some small issues but in general works fine with little if at all any user
intervention.
If I can help further, let me know.

Hi William,

Thank you very much for your reply.
It is great to know there is a usable solution out there.

If you do remember the name of the utility you used I would be very grateful if you could forward it to me.

Kind regards,

Ok, for backing up files and creating a system image there's windows 7 file
recovery in the control panel of windows 8. Also as for antivirus, I use
viper although windows defender comes with windows 8. I don't know if it's
any better than any other package but it will do I'm thinking.

Hello Niall, here is a link you might be interested in.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03481733&lc=en&cc=us&dl
c=en#N91
It is the procedure to backup system files on an HP laptop and I'm pretty
sure it will give you an idea what you would be in for.
As for Windows Defender, it is the same as Microsoft Security Essentials
(MSE). It's not a bad program and it is built in to windows 8 whereas MSE
was a separate program for prior versions of Windows.
It's better than nothing, but I would definitely try to find a better
security suite since the reviews of Windows Defender are quite mixed.

I would suggest Security Essentials from Microsoft but it does not work on
Windows 8. alternately, Windows 8 does come with a modified version of MSE
which is compatible with Windows 8 and is called Windows Defender.

Just one caveat. I think my experience was fairly unique, but Essentials totally disabled the keyboard on my HP, running XP. It was so bad, I needed sighted assistance uninstalling it. I never tried to find out what happened; once was more than enough.

Man, I don't know what happened, but it had to be really BIOS- or hardware-specific, but it was real! We swapped out the batteries, and were at our wits end, when I decided to do the obvious and undo the last change, which was MSE. I guess I didn't mention the keyboard is wireless, if that made any difference.

Hi Ted,
My XP machine was a Dell and I also used a wireless keyboard as I didn't
like having to use the laptop layout for JAWS.
About all I can say about the HP laptops is that there a couple of places on
the top of the keyboard just under the screen which turn on and off all
kinds of things and those places seem to be heat sensative.
You don't have to press anything, just pass your hand across the area and
you have had it. (LOLLOLLOL)
My wife has a year newer HP than I do and her keyboard on the laptop itself
is set to make the F keys media ready. F7 does not call on the spell
checker. (LOLLOLLOL)
I am migrating to a MacBook Pro so, hopefully, I will leave the world of
JAWS behind.

Hi,
I have used it on my laptop for years now, and I've never had an issue with it. That's odd that it would do that. Maybe there was something else on your machine. On my newer desktop and laptop, I use Avast. The latest version seems pretty good. However, I be interested for other ideas. Something else that works better than Avast. Thanks,
A

This good old machine is a desktop. They have some of the world's poorest tech support, but I guess you don't need tech support when the thing just keeps perking along. The only way I know about the tech support was I had some questions early in the game, one of which they were able to answer, and the other of which I found on my own, quite by accident--great hardware, though.

Just one caveat. I think my experience was fairly unique, but Essentials totally disabled the keyboard on my HP, running XP. It was so bad, I needed sighted assistance uninstalling it. I never tried to find out what happened; once was more than enough.

I would suggest Security Essentials from Microsoft but it does not work on Windows 8. alternately, Windows 8 does come with a modified version of MSE which is compatible with Windows 8 and is called Windows Defender.

Niall

I went back to AVG, after a couple of years away, and things are fine.

Hi,
I have used it on my laptop for years now, and I've never had an issue with it. That's odd that it would do that. Maybe there was something else on your machine. On my newer desktop and laptop, I use Avast. The latest version seems pretty good. However, I be interested for other ideas. Something else that works better than Avast. Thanks, A

From what I've been reading, Avast is doing a better job. I have actually found things with Avast, that MSE has failed to detect.

Best product, hands down, Image for Windows
(http://www.terabyteunlimited.com). You can even customize something
to make the image restore part work with speech if you're handy with
slipstreaming technology.
