David sound advice to anyone but most of this I have already tried.
The touch pad is never on as when friends need to help me they just plug
in the mouse.
I have been on remote support and have had patches to try and fix the
problem but without success, so hope in future versions things might get
better.
My husband has the same set up on a desk top but doesn't have all the
issues I have on a laptop..
I can only conclude laptops are female and touchy.
Take care

Hi Hazel.
I don't know that I have the answer for you, but I have had a Toshiba
laptop
and I am now on my third Dell laptop and I have had the same problem with
all four of them with the curser jumping all over the place.

The keyboard on all my laptops were configured in the following way.
1. A small round button between and at the bottom of the G & H key's.
2. Below the space bar a right and left mouse click buttons.
3. Below those buttons the touchpad.
4. Below the touchpad, another right and left mouse click buttons.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. On the touchpad and that little
button between the G & H key's, if tapped, have the same effect as a mouse
click resulting in your curser being sent where ever.
In the touchpad settings, there are several options of which features to
turn off or on.
On some of my laptops, I have had to have sighted assistance to properly
set
these features.

On one of my laptops the vibration of typing on the keyboard would
activate
the mouse button.
May I suggest that you open a new document, type a sentence, know where
your
curser is and double tap the mouse pad and see if your curser has changed
locations.
If you are using an external keyboard, all the above do not apply.
If you are not using an external keyboard, you could give that a try.

Have you checked your display settings?
Have you contacted Jaws support?

I am convinced that there is a fix for this problem. On the positive side,
it produces patience.

Hello to all you Jaws users.
I have just joined the group and wonder how things are coming along
with the issue of the Jaws cursor moving all over the place .
I have used Jaws for some time and at present using version 13 on
Windows 7 but this aspect of the software is driving me crazy at times.
Are the latest versions any better as before spending out more money I
need to know if this has been taken into account .
Another very annoying thing is when you are writing anything and arrow
up to re read the words can be scrambled in which you have to abandon
and start again.
Surely software at high cost should have undertaken to assure these
basic functions work well.
Yes we have tried other screen readers but these have proved not to
our taste at all.
I hope to hear some positive feedback.
Take care

Lisa Larges

I too have been having the issue of inserting new text in the wrong place in
Word; I have the track pad locked, so I don't think that that is the issue
for me. I've only had this problem since updating to Word 2010. This never
happened to me before in older versions of Word using the same machine.
I've found that there are several functions in Word 2010 that either aren't
as stable as in older versions of Word, or that I haven't found the
equivalent for. One example in the latter category is that I used to be able
to use JAWS key plus page down to learn the page number, line number that
the cursor was at, and how far in the cursor was on that line.
Anyone know how to get this info in Word 2010? Now JAWS key plus page down
just gives me the page number and number of words.
But I do find the cursor jumping when cutting or pasting or otherwise adding
new text to be really annoying; I now can't count on the cursor being where
I last left it, and I still get surprised to find things in the wrong place.

Lisa,

For line and column number in Word 2010, press JAWS key with the numpad
period. That is, using the PC keyboard layout, press insert and the key
immediately to its right.

With insert-f, I get distance from the left and other margins measured in
inches.

Lisa Larges

Hi,
Thanks for this, I've found this feature to be so helpful, and I was sad
when the keystroke I knew no longer provided the same information.
I couldn't figure out the laptop equivalent for this, so I went on another
Google search; the Freedom Scietific list of keystroke commands didn't list
this anywhere, as far as I can tell.
An Arizonan website led me to the correct information for laptops, which is
JAWS key (Caps Lock) + the delete key. (I'm wondering if the JAWS key +
Delete also works in the desktop version, and may have been what you were
referring to with Insert + Period?)
Sometimes it's very difficult to find information through Freedom
Scientific, even though their help sections have been greatly improved.

Also, for me, the JAWS key + F gives me the point size, font name, line info
(centered, right, left etc) and whether the line is indented from the
margin.
I don't get information on where a specific character is in relation to the
left margin -- which I think is what you're suggesting?

As a bonus, here's the website that led me to the right answer. It's very
basic, but as I said, contained info I couldn't find anywhere on the Freedom
Scientific page.

Lisa,

For line and column number in Word 2010, press JAWS key with the numpad
period. That is, using the PC keyboard layout, press insert and the key
immediately to its right.

With insert-f, I get distance from the left and other margins measured in
inches.

Take care

OK, apparently something has gone wrong - it just stopped working a couple of months ago - strange!

Hello.
I have Jaws 14, Windows 7, and MS Word 2010, and the place marker selection
using insert plus spacebar plus m works fine for me.

I have had a similar issue along these lines. I used to be able to press the
JAWS key + space bar+ m to select text between a marked place and the
curser. Now when I try to do that it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to
do this? I have Word 2010, JAWS 14 and Windows 7.

Hi,
Thanks for this, I've found this feature to be so helpful, and I was sad
when the keystroke I knew no longer provided the same information.

With insert-f, I get distance from the left and other margins measured in
inches.

On the touchpad and that little

click resulting in your curser being sent where ever.
In the touchpad settings, there are several options of which features to
turn off or on.
On some of my laptops, I have had to have sighted assistance to properly
set
these features.

On one of my laptops the vibration of typing on the keyboard would
activate

May I suggest that you open a new document, type a sentence, know where
your
curser is and double tap the mouse pad and see if your curser has changed
locations.
If you are using an external keyboard, all the above do not apply.
If you are not using an external keyboard, you could give that a try.

Have you checked your display settings?
Have you contacted Jaws support?

I am convinced that there is a fix for this problem. On the positive side,

Take care

Lisa,

I'm glad I got you going in the right direction. Beyond that, I'm sorry to
have caused you to waste time.

As you say, the key combo that speaks line and column numbers in Word 2010
is JAWS key+delete, whether on the PC or laptop layout. The reason I
referred to the delete key as a period is that when numlock is turned on,
it's the period key. When the numlock is off and JAWS takes over the numpad,
that key becomes delete.

I also misspoke, or miswrote, when I said JAWS key+f indicates inches. It
doesn't. It's the alt key pressed together with the regular delete key,
which I use all the time. Here's what Ann Byrne posted on this subject:

Pressing alt-delete will tell you how far it is from the left edge and from
the top, but not from the right. and the left measurement includes the
margin. So if you have a one-inch left margin and you're in the first column
and first line, the report will be 'one inch from left, one inch from top'.

With insert-f, I get distance from the left and other margins measured in
inches.

Yes David I am using a Sony Vaio laptop but the touch pad is not
activated.
The mystery continues.

Take care
Hazel
