HEY FOLKS. I HAVE ALITTLE BIT OF A MORAL DILEMMA AND NEED HELP. I RECENTLY HAD TO DO A REPAIR ON JAWS. WHILE I WAS ON THE JAWS SITE DOWNLOADING THE FINAL VERSION OF JAWS 9 I CAME ACROSS THE FILES FOR 10-13. MY QUESTION TO YOU IS THIS: WHEN 14 COMES OUT IN OR AROUND NOVEMBER, CAN I LEGALLY DOWNLOAD AND USE 13 OR AM I GOING TO GET THE FORTY MINUTE MODE THING. I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING UNDERHANDED AND AM ALSO QUITE STRAPPED FOR CASH. PROBLEM IS THAT THE FURTHER I GO, THE MORE MONEY I HAVE TO COME UP WITH TO GET CURRENT. I AM NO SLOUCH WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING FOR SOMETHING, BUT I WAS JUST WONDERING. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS. STEWART

Stewart,

No, you'll get 40-minute mode if you install any version beyond where your
license expired. You're allowed to try, but that's it unless you enjoy
rebooting.

No fooling the system.

questions about NVDA's possible limitations the last time you made this
claim. NVDA is a project to be applauded, and some listers say they use it
as a secondary speech program. I, for one, wish you'd addressed the
questions that listers asked you at the time.

I tried NVDA for about 20 minutes, the speech engine drove me crazy, and I
had problems finding help. I know not a long trial, and not fair but I did
not have time to struggle to hear the voice that sounded unpleasant to me
and spend a lot of time learning how to use the program.

In fairness, I believe NVDA recently announced that it can work with a new
set of voices. I haven't read any user reports of their quality. An
unpleasant voice would be a deal breaker for me, too.

I have often wondered the same thing, Jaws is my main screen reader but I
have a subscription to Samnet which I use on occasion to keep up with
community news. I originally got that subscription so I could shop easier
without having to remember to use forms mode. Jaws fixed that but I hang on
to SA for other reasons.

I also do have NVDA, just not installed or working at the moment.

Now, I intend to drop the subject before I start flaming.

I appreciate your put-down so very much! I may be a loser to you, and in
some areas of my life but, I think I have a reasonable screen-reader.

I have been using computers since 1981, and for several of those years I
worked and was productive using an Optacon to do all my computer work,
feeling that speech would slow me down. After I had deadlines to meet and a
dead Optacon I discovered that the assumption that speech would slow me down
was incorrect and in the nearly 30 years of computing I have used several
screen-readers, some only to test, some for longer periods of time.

I also have an iPhone which had a learning curve but which I like, even
though I am not anywhere near a fast typist on it.

If you and others consider me a loser, then I guess you will just have to do
that.

I have said all I need to say on the subject, so please do not make any
other comments for the sake of the list. I started to reply privately and
decided others needed to see if they all consider me a loser because I don't
like the voice NVDA used and due to family illness, a full-time job and
responsibilities dealing with things my husband usually had taken care of if
I am a loser because I chose not to spend time on this at the time I tried
to learn it. I have been stressed over the past couple of years but I have
continued to work full time and manage, learning when I can, passing up on
some things because I know I don't have enough hours in a day to complete
them.

I am not planning on buying a MAC soon either, despite the fact that I hear
a lot about how well it does many things, mostly because much as I'd love to
do it, I can't buy every technology out there--my ideal job would probably
be testing everything accessible out there but, that is not what is paying
our bills.

HEY FOLKS. I HAVE ALITTLE BIT OF A MORAL DILEMMA AND NEED HELP. I
RECENTLY HAD TO DO A REPAIR ON JAWS. WHILE I WAS ON THE JAWS SITE
DOWNLOADING THE FINAL VERSION OF JAWS 9 I CAME ACROSS THE FILES FOR
10-13.
MY QUESTION TO YOU IS THIS: WHEN 14 COMES OUT IN OR AROUND NOVEMBER,
CAN I LEGALLY DOWNLOAD AND USE 13 OR AM I GOING TO GET THE FORTY
MINUTE MODE THING. I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING UNDERHANDED AND AM
ALSO QUITE STRAPPED FOR CASH. PROBLEM IS THAT THE FURTHER I GO, THE
MORE MONEY I HAVE TO COME UP WITH TO GET CURRENT. I AM NO SLOUCH
WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING FOR SOMETHING, BUT I WAS JUST WONDERING. ANY
HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I am not planning on buying a MAC soon either, despite the fact that I hear
a lot about how well it does many things, mostly because much as I'd love to
do it, I can't buy every technology out there--my ideal job would probably
be testing everything accessible out there but, that is not what is paying
our bills.

Hi,
Some people like Karen seem to have forgotten that what works for her may not work for someone else, or vice versa, and that's fine. To each his/her own. If somebody told me that I was a loser because I didn't use screen reader x, I'd tell that person to grease up and stick the installation CD or thumb drive version of screen reader x straight up where the sun don't shine. Everybody has the right to use what suits them, end of discussion, end of story.

Rose, it's nice to find another old-time Optacon user. I used one for 16 years on the job and still use mine at home. Right on! It's a shame that nobody's doing any serious R&D on a new version. The old Optacon was hard to beat.

THE FORTY MINUTE MODE THING. I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING
UNDERHANDED AND AM ALSO QUITE STRAPPED FOR CASH. PROBLEM IS THAT
THE FURTHER I GO, THE MORE MONEY I HAVE TO COME UP WITH TO GET
CURRENT. I AM NO SLOUCH WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING FOR SOMETHING, BUT

some areas of my life but, I think I have a reasonable screen-reader.

I have been using computers since 1981, and for several of those years
I
worked and was productive using an Optacon to do all my computer work,
feeling that speech would slow me down. After I had deadlines to meet
and a
dead Optacon I discovered that the assumption that speech would slow me
down
was incorrect and in the nearly 30 years of computing I have used
several
screen-readers, some only to test, some for longer periods of time.

I also have an iPhone which had a learning curve but which I like, even
though I am not anywhere near a fast typist on it.

If you and others consider me a loser, then I guess you will just have
to do
that.

I have said all I need to say on the subject, so please do not make any
other comments for the sake of the list. I started to reply privately
and
decided others needed to see if they all consider me a loser because I
don't
like the voice NVDA used and due to family illness, a full-time job and
responsibilities dealing with things my husband usually had taken care
of if
I am a loser because I chose not to spend time on this at the time I
tried
to learn it. I have been stressed over the past couple of years but I
have
continued to work full time and manage, learning when I can, passing up
on
some things because I know I don't have enough hours in a day to
complete
them.

I am not planning on buying a MAC soon either, despite the fact that I
hear
a lot about how well it does many things, mostly because much as I'd
love to
do it, I can't buy every technology out there--my ideal job would
probably
be testing everything accessible out there but, that is not what is
paying
our bills.

I tried NVDA for about 20 minutes, the speech engine drove me crazy,
and I
had problems finding help. I know not a long trial, and not fair but
I
did
not have time to struggle to hear the voice that sounded unpleasant
to me
and spend a lot of time learning how to use the program.
