Anybody remember how to handle those little message balloons? I've been
going through old What's New files trying to find the tip with no luck. Those little suckers always get away before I can find them, let alone click. Hi Ted,

In Windows 7 it's under "Ease of Access". Type Ease of Access in to the search box in the start prompt. In the Ease of Access Center go to "Make it easier to focus on tasks" and hit enter. Near the end of the options that come up is a setting to adjust the time that those balloons stay on screen. I adjusted mine to 1 minute which gives me enough time to find them and click on them. Yes, for XP you need to create and execute a file that will change a value in your registry. Here's a complete text from an old E-Mail message explaining how to do it, compliments of "The Elf" who once used to be on this list. Here is how to increase the time balloon tips stay on your computer. Copy the below in note pad and save it. Now find the file you just created and rename it to "changeballoontime.reg: and enter on it and say yes when prompted if you want to add the information to your registry. Copy what is between start copying and end copying; but do not copy the words start copying and end copying. start copying Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify] "BalloonTip"=dword:0000000a end copying Dave Carlson Tastefully composed and transmitted from somewhere in the Western United States, using a Dell Latitude E6520 and Windows 7

Bergen, Eric <Eric.Bergen@...>
Is 60 the decimal number, or the hex number?
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Hex 60 is decimal 96. Hex is based on 16 instead of 10. Hope this helps. Eric.

I presume the key is that last line. I've never messed with the registry by hand. Back in the Bronze Age, it was easy to get hold of a DOS manual, and learn to tweak (Peter Norton had one of the best), but, being my own administrator back at the house, I've always been reluctant to risk crippling my system, even with Restore available. Subject: RE: Balloons Hi Ted, In Windows 7 it's under "Ease of Access".
