Balloons

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Anybody remember how to handle those little message balloons? I've been
going through old What's New files trying to find the tip with no luck.
Those little suckers always get away before I can find them, let alone
click.

Hi Ted,
In Windows 7 it's under "Ease of Access". Type Ease of Access in to the
search box in the start prompt. In the Ease of Access Center go to "Make it
easier to focus on tasks" and hit enter.
Near the end of the options that come up is a setting to adjust the time
that those balloons stay on screen.
I adjusted mine to 1 minute which gives me enough time to find them and
click on them.

Well, that not a JAWS solution, but I bet it'll work fine here at the
office, and I do have one at the office. It says part of antivirus is
not turned on--not cool, if true.

Thanks.

Okay. That, coupled with the earlier tip, should do it. One minute
should be ample time. I saw the default was 5 seconds--ridiculous!

Do you find these balloons visually or is there some way to jump to them?
And thanks for the tip on how to make them stay open for more time, that
sure is handy.

Juanita,

Yes, for XP you need to create and execute a file that will change a value
in your registry. Here's a complete text from an old E-Mail message
explaining how to do it, compliments of "The Elf" who once used to be on
this list.

Here is how to increase the time balloon tips stay on your computer.

Copy the below in note pad and save it. Now find the file you just created
and rename it to "changeballoontime.reg: and enter on it and say yes when
prompted if you want to add the information to your registry.

Copy what is between start copying and end copying; but do not copy the
words start copying and end copying.

start copying

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify]
"BalloonTip"=dword:0000000a

end copying

How does that change the time value? I presume the key is that last
line. I've never messed with the registry by hand. Back in the Bronze

Restore available.

Correct. The hexadecimal value given to the double word is "A" which is
10.
I'm suspecting 10 seconds is the value.

Juanita,

Yes, for XP you need to create and execute a file that will change a
value in your registry. Here's a complete text from an old E-Mail
message explaining how to do it, compliments of "The Elf" who once used
to be on this list.

Here is how to increase the time balloon tips stay on your computer.

Copy the below in note pad and save it. Now find the file you just
created and rename it to "changeballoontime.reg: and enter on it and say
yes when prompted if you want to add the information to your registry.

Copy what is between start copying and end copying; but do not copy the
words start copying and end copying.

start copying

"BalloonTip"=dword:0000000a

end copying

In Windows 7 it's under "Ease of Access". Type Ease of Access in to the

Near the end of the options that come up is a setting to adjust the time

I adjusted mine to 1 minute which gives me enough time to find them and

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

end copying

Near the end of the options that come up is a setting to adjust the time

How does that change the time value? I presume the key is that last

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Tra

"BalloonTip"=dword:0000000a

end copying

Hi Ted,
In Windows 7 it's under "Ease of Access". Type Ease of Access in to the
search box in the start prompt. In the Ease of Access Center go to "Make
it
easier to focus on tasks" and hit enter.
Near the end of the options that come up is a setting to adjust the time
that those balloons stay on screen.
I adjusted mine to 1 minute which gives me enough time to find them and
click on them.

Ted,

It's more fear-factor than it deserves. Just export a complete copy
before you do any editing, and you should be just fine. Completely
accessible (thank heavens for that) with JAWS.

Is 60 the decimal number, or the hex number?
Hex 60 is decimal 96.
Hex is based on 16 instead of 10.
Hope this helps.

Okay, my ham license and working with hex was a few years ago, and high

Correct. The hexadecimal value given to the double word is "A" which is
10.
I'm suspecting 10 seconds is the value.
