right clicking on shortcuts

I am taking a class for windows seven. I am to create shortcuts on my
desktop for easier acess and I am having trouble right clicking on them.
When I select a shortcut and right click it unselects and opens a menu for
the desktop. I need to make shortcuts for my flash drive and some other
things also. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Mike

Hi. When you're on the desktop, do you confirm that the icon/shortcut you
want is selected? If JAWS says "unselected," right-clicking will bring up
options for the desktop, not the icon.

To select an item where you have focus, press spacebar. To unselect, press
control-spacebar.

I hope this helps. I have XP, so it's possible there some other explanation
for Windows 7.

Thanks for the fast reply. I am sure that the item is selected, but right
clicking still opens a context menu about the desktop. Hope someone has the
answer. I am using windows seven pro 64.

Hello there;
If you want to create shortcuts on desktop using windows 7,
When your on the desktop,
Ctrl+spacebar,
This unselects all icons,
So now when yu right click,
Or press the applications key,
You can arrow to,
New sub menu,
And find shortcut.
Hope this helps.
Or, you can navigate to

Have you tried the applications key (or shift f10 in your case)?
