Hi, Maria and list. I just spoke with Hal in the sales department of Freedom Scientific, and he did confirm this. He could not tell me whether the JAWS screen reader and the WindowEyes screen reader would remain independent software programs, or whether they would be merged into one screen reader. I did voice my opinion that there are those who are dedicated to the use of both screen readers, and that many would not appreciate them being merged into one software.

I also asked him to pass on to his supervisors that the users of both software programs would appreciate some clarification about what would happen with both screen readers as a result of this merger.

Hi All,

Freedom Scientific has a press release that talks a bit about this, but makes no mention of whether or not JAWS and Window-Eyes will be combined or merged into separate products.

Wow, this is not so great. Think about it. History has shown over and over that such mergers usually lead to higher prices because of reduced competition. Ultimately, either JAWS or Window Eyes is likely to be phased out, which means that VFO may raise prices on the surviving screen reader, which will probably be JAWS, because it has a larger market share.

I'm not against people making money on their blood, sweat and tears. Jaws
and Windows eyes are good products. I have no idea what their financial
situation is but I would guess Jaws has a bigger share of the market.
Besides they have brilliant marketing people on their team. My guess is
Windows Eyes will be gobbled up and jaws will see a few new technology
innovations. But you will never get the most outrageously brilliant product
in the world. Let me use an anology most can relate to.
Your mom made the best chicken soup in the world. So did your best friend's
mom. One day you combined both recipes. You know what you got for your
effort? A huge pot of chicken soup.

Wow!

Actually, I think that's great; it will allow great minds in the adaptive
technology industry to work together to make things better for us in the
future.

Ah. The makers of WindowEyes have merged with Freedom Scientific. You will
hear all about it, I'm sure.

JAWS and WindowEyes under the same umbrella?

Good Heavens, what happened to the relationship with Microsoft! There goes free acquisition for Office users.

It really doesn't matter, at this point, who merged with whom last year or earlier this year (it's all blending together now).

Freedom Scientific and AISquared [ZoomText and Window-Eyes] are now both owned by VFO, and VFO owns Optelec as well.  You get this announcement if you go to freedomscientific.com, aisquared.com, or optelec.com.  They're all one, big, `happy` family now!
