Broken Quick Settings
Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
Here's a strange one. Since upgrading my home machine to the last
build, Quick Settings no longer works. It works fine at the office. The former was upgraded first from the DVD, and then the Internet download. The latter went straight from 10 to the latest build of 13. When I try to access Quick settings, I get a quirky error message about the inability to access Ms XML 6.0. I tried repairing the installation to no avail. Now that I remember, I installed from the thumb drive, which had always worked before. Anyone ever seen this kind of thing? Wish I could easily replicate the message, but it's difficult to copy and paste. It's just an overlay, which disappears when you press okay, and Virtual Viewer (or results viewer, as they call it now) doesn't capture it. Performance seems otherwise unimpaired. Instead of going through the full routine, it did the syncopated clock, then told me it had made changes and to reboot. I was a little skeptical, but saw the new version number. The next day (yesterday), I did try a new installation, which took me to the repair, modify, Etc. I chose repair; didn't help. Maybe I should try it from the hard drive. That's how I did it here.

Just curious. Can each of you answer whether you installed JAWS 13 from a DVD or the downloaded executable from FS, - or - did you accept it as an update? I'm just wondering since I had nothing like this happen with my install. And once again I silently thank FS for changing the name from JAWS Option to Quick Settings. The subtle tweak was lost on me -- and the rationale as well. Dave Carlson Sent from my Dell Latitude E6520 using Windows 7, San Francisco Bay Area

not get the error message I posted more than likely already has MSXML 6 installed on their computer. In looking back at Ted's original message he did note there was an error to do with MSXML 6. It could also explain why one of his computers works fine with Quick Settings and the other one brings up the error. I did not see the error message until today when I attempted to open the Quick Settings while in Internet Explorer. If I had seen the message yesterday when I could not make Research It work, I would have searched for the missing file then, but installing the file today apparently made Research It work also. Joni

I set jaws to automatically read messages, it doesn't? I set jaws to silent the top&bottom alert, it doesn't? I set jaws not to read the greater signs, it does? Very annoying. I already did 1 uninstall, So, I think it will be back to 12 again. Quick settings FS says? How about, annoying settings?

no idea which one would be appropriate. Besides, it's almost inconceivable that, during the installation, I managed to delete a file I'd be lucky to find with a Geiger counter. I'll have a day off on the 13th of next month, and would like to do a tandem session then with FS. Mean time, everything else functions perfectly. If I have to customize the response of an Excel sheet, I guess I'll have to load JAWS 10 until then. The old adjust JAWS still works fine. Ted

I think you've hit on the reason for your and Ted's problem. My XP was updated to SP3 years ago so I would not have had any issues with the lack of that DLL. Microsoft often adds new functionality to any of its service pack releases and even in many of their interim patches. For Windows 7 there are likely patches that have come out since its inception that also add a DLL like that one. This seems to be more a matter of you and Ted both having an operating system that was behind one or more service packs or patches, and that JAWS 13 was written to take advantage of an updated DLL neither of you had yet. And of course FS will not try to include all the necessary DLL in their package -- that would make it a very large installation. I ran into the same issue with an application needing a newer version of the Microsoft.Net Framework. Again a DLL that I needed to update. I followed the suggested link, downloaded from the MS site, and then went back to the install. Dave Carlson Sent from my Dell Latitude E6520 using Windows 7, San Francisco Bay Area

Your guess is as good as mine. Note that Joni just posted that her OS is XP Home Service Pack 2, consistent with Ms's list. I searched my XP Service Pack 3 system files and found several with "MSXML6" in their name, so one way or the other it appears this issue is addressed differently between Service Packs. And again, neither Windows 7 nor Vista is in the list of OS's that support the file that solved Joni's problem, as it will undoubtedly help others.

I do not possess the knowledge or expertise, not to mention the patience, to troubleshoot a problem like that so I did a restore point and am going to try to make it with SP2 until I end up with Windows 7 or whatever MS has in release when I need a new computer. Now, I wonder what operating system and which service pack Ted has. Joni
