JFW with a VPN?

Ann Byrne

If I connect to work via a vpn, can JAWS read the screen???

thanks,

Ann

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

I've used a VPN with no problems. We used something called FireBox.
If you connect via Citrix, JAWS has to be loaded both at the server and on your client machine. That's kind of a pain.
The VPN was much, much better.
I'm not sure all VPNs work the same way.

Using a citrix or Windows remote desktop to work with a remote computer, not only do you have to have a version of JAWS on each machine, you also have to purchase an additional piece of software from Freedom Scientific, called Remote Access, which has to be installed on the local machine, in oreder for you to be able to use JAWS on the remote computer to control the remote computer from the local computer.

Remote Access, costs an additional US $200.00,.

I'm not sure this is true if you have JAWS Professional version. I've never paid for a separate piece of software. Perhaps if you just have regular JAWS, you have to buy this separate package.
Probably should check with Freedom Scientific.

Remote access? Well there is a free software called log me in
software, which is remote so remote that my being silly enough to think a
one man local business knew jaws in fact had once met a blind man and saw
him use jaws. He put this log me in software on my computer said he did this
with many clients, and if my computer was left on would just start to have
a little look around and mess up my files he thought he was helping by
doing this. At times I saw a glimpse of other peoples names , I then called
in another computer man who did not claim to know jaws but said I am going
to disable this logme in software before he ruins your pc.and he did some
fixing of files. So be warned about remote access software, at least with
ttandem you know the other person has jaws, anyway only take care . I was
too trusting regards dorothy

Dave...

Ann,

Simply - yes. The VPN is just a specially-encoded connection you make with your work server to lock out any possible encroachment by others. Aside from that it's completely the same as a standard internet connection.

I have just finished talking to someone at FS Tech Support. They confirmed what I had written in my previous reply on this thread, that is, If you are connecting to a remote computer, regardless as to whether it is a stand-alone computer or a server computer, running a network with other computers connected to it, through Remote Desktop or Citrix, you need a copy of JAWS installed on both the local and remote computers. In addition you also need FS's Remote Access installed on the local computer.

Dave...

Ann,

Further to your question: To clarify the apparently side-tracked discussion
of installing JAWS on both machines, Citrix, etc.

When you have VPN installed on your machine for the purpose of gaining a
connection to your work from home, all you need is your network logon name
and either a static VPN numeric password, or one that is generated using the
SoftID token.

JAWS can read the temporary VPN login dialog.

Once connected to your work server, JAWS reads just like any other internet
connection. VPN *does not* rely on a pure graphical transfer of a remote
desktop, as is done with WebEx, PC Anywhere, or other remote desktop sharing
applications.

VPN is jut a high-security password-protected Internet connection.

No wonder we were never able to get it to work. One of my key apps was

Using a citrix or Windows remote desktop to work with a remote computer,
not
only do you have to have a version of JAWS on each machine, you also
have to
purchase an additional piece of software from Freedom Scientific, called

Remote Access, which has to be installed on the local machine, in oreder
for
you to be able to use JAWS on the remote computer to control the remote
computer from the local computer.

Remote Access, costs an additional US $200.00,.

HTH

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

I've used a VPN with no problems. We used something called FireBox.
If you connect via Citrix, JAWS has to be loaded both at the server
and on
your client machine. That's kind of a pain.
The VPN was much, much better.
I'm not sure all VPNs work the same way.
