Jaws 17 Lagging
Nicole Massey <nyyki@...>
Okay, I just upgraded to Jaws 17 from Jaws 15. I'm running Windows 7 on a
Dell dual core machine. I've managed to not have any of the annoying Jaws freeze problems in Outlook that I had in 15 so far. However, I'm noticing that Jaws 17 seems slower. It doesn't respond as quickly when reading things. Is this a known issue, or something I'm dealing with because I'm running Windows 7? It slows down things like clearing the junk email folder each morning, and it seems more sluggish.

I'm running JAWS 17 on a Windows 7 system and only notice lagging if there's something really busy going on: things like a massively busy web page loading or mail coming into Outlook while I'm simultaneously trying to compose or read a message. Overall, though, I don't see it any less responsive than any prior version.

average person thanks to my decades of music performance and composition. There's a clear lag in Outlook -- I delete something from the junk email folder and there's a pause before Jaws reads the next sender and title to me, and it wasn't like that with 15. Is there a way to make Jaws respond in a snappier way? Perhaps adjust a buffer size, for example?

I don't find too much lag in JAWS 17, but Narrator is terrible in that department in W10. I also find much lag when connecting via bluetooth. Most annoying.

Another thing I've noticed -- when I press Jaws+F11 it does something odd,

and the list of tray programs won't come up. If I press it again, even after some time has passed, I get a note that Jaws can't open it because it's already open. Rebooting Jaws seems to fix this issue, so it's an intermittent problem where only sometimes the program has trouble with this. Sort of odd.

Yeah, this happens to me even when it's only Outlook running. I've installed

I reported to FS (or VFO) the following:
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Since JAWS 17 last two minor builds, there is a 15 to 20 second delay when I press Ctrl+F to do a find in IE. I'm also using Windows 7 on a 32-bit machine. This has been annoying me for several weeks, and I finally reported it. Furthermore, I find that if I shut down JAWS 17 and launch JAWS 15 there is absolutely no delay at all. Same delay symptoms when invoking JAWS+F7 or JAWS+F5 in web pages. 15 to 20 second delay before responding. FS suggested I remove all my startup processes using MSConfig, and just enable JAWS. That fixed the problem, for now with JAWS 17. Now I'm asked by FS to start enabling my startup processes one at a time until I find one that is causing the problem. Essentially I'm doing the troubleshooting work for FS -- so be it. Give that a try yourself and see if the delays or sluggishness disappear. I, too, am having a problem with Jaws sluggishness with Outlook 2016.

It seems that as I continue to type an e-mail in Outlook, Jaws slows down in terms of announcing my key strokes. In fact, sometimes, it gets to the point where Jaws totally freezes, and I have to wait a few seconds for it to recover. I can't consistently replicate the problem, or link it to anything else that might be running on my computer at the time, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Again, I'm using the latest build of Jaws 17 here on a Windows 7 64-bit laptop. I don't recall having this problem with Outlook 2010 and Jaws 16 on this same computer prior to my software upgrades. If I press it again, even after some time has passed, I get a note that Jaws can't open it because it's already open. Rebooting Jaws seems to fix this issue, so it's an intermittent problem where only sometimes the program has trouble with this. Sort of odd. -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Maria Campbell Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2016 11:30 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Jaws 17 Lagging I don't find too much lag in JAWS 17, but Narrator is terrible in that department in W10. I also find much lag when connecting via bluetooth. Most annoying. There's a clear lag in Outlook -- I delete something from the junk folder and there's a pause before Jaws reads the next sender and title to me, and it wasn't like that with 15. Is there a way to make Jaws respond in a snappier way? Perhaps adjust a buffer size, for example? -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <mailto:main@jfw.groups.io> [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Walt Smith Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2016 11:03 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io <mailto:main@jfw.groups.io> Subject: Re: Jaws 17 Lagging Nicole - I'm running JAWS 17 on a Windows 7 system and only notice lagging if there's something really busy going on: things like a massively busy web page loading or mail coming into Outlook while I'm simultaneously trying to compose or read a message. Overall, though, I don't see it any less responsive than any prior version. -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <mailto:main@jfw.groups.io> [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Nicole Massey Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2016 11:56 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io <mailto:main@jfw.groups.io> Subject: Jaws 17 Lagging Okay, I just upgraded to Jaws 17 from Jaws 15. I'm running Windows 7 on a Dell dual core machine. It slows down things like clearing the junk email folder each morning, and it seems more sluggish.

not less. Since Microsoft will update the OS as they feel like it, things are going to get broken in the normal development process, and we can look forward to more downtime. Folks on the Apple side of things have dealt with this for years, where an application will stop working after an upgrade. I can just hope that your prediction that it'll get easier will bear out, despite my apprehensions.

Microsoft just released open-source software for automatically testing the accessibility of a browser that uses User Interface Automation - as Edge will after the next upgrade. How far the automated testing will extend remains to be seen, however. At the moment, nobody (Apple, Google, GNOME or Microsoft) seems to be doing proper testing before making releases or during development. Having only one main operating system version to support will make it easier for Windows screen reader developers though.

Actually, Jaws has become more of a problem than it used to be. Back when

it was somewhere in the single digit release (I started with version 0 and had a low 4 digit serial) I was able to do just about anything I needed with Jaws. Even graphics were mostly easy to work with. Unfortunately, web and software developers of today aren't willing to spend the three minutes it would take to properly tag a webpage for accessibility. And most of them are proud they saved the boss that three minutes. If you can get to someone with the authority to correct the problem they don't want to hear about it or where to find the accessibility documentation. Many sites that were a breeze three years ago, and workable a year ago, are now margin at best. Some sites that have not changed in the past few years are likewise less accessible due to "improvements" made to Jaws. I haven't had any contact with Freedom Scientific in years but in the distant past they would implement someone's brainstorm and not worry about the side effects. I once asked one of the techs how to read a progress bar. He said to cut out a strip in a piece of cardboard, place it on the screen, and use a light detector. The job would have been completed before I got the cardboard properly aligned. My rant for the week. Tony\
