Moderated jaws and computer shutting down

Stan Holdeman

Listers: From time to time Jaws shuts down and restarts on its own, usually while reading in html. Less frequently but often enough, the computer suddenly shuts down and restarts on its own. Is this also a Jaws-provoked thing?

Any ideas what is going on?

I don’t think Jawsis making your computer crash and restart. Jaws crashing and restarting itself is not that uncommon, remember to be patient, when this happens it can take sometimes up to 30 or 40 seconds for Jaws to come back.

Stan,

Sorry if my prior message was garbled.  Sounds like an “add on” in your browser is conflicting with JAWS.  Perhaps a script that is running in background.

Check to see if :

This happens with all browsers.

Occurs when certain programs  are running.

I would also run a virus scan just to be safe.

You can disable all “add ons” in your browser to see if this fixes the issue.  If so then the fun process begins trying to discover which is the guilty party.

JAWS does crash from time to time but a computer re start tells me it is more than just JAWS.

                Hi Stan,

I find using internet explorer that jaws freezes/restarts frequently, so I’ve moved over to using google chrome and don’t seem to get the same problems. I think this is because internet explorer is being faded out and I’ve come across more and more sites that don’t support internet explorer anymore, although these sites will most of the time still work it means they’re not optimised to work with it so more problems/slowdowns occur.

this is mor likly a windows problem.
windows 10 will reboot if it becomes unstable.
you could try useing the system file checker.
logged in as administrator open a command prompt window and type in sfc /scannow
it will try to correct corrupt windows files if it finds any.
but it might ask for a windows installation disk to replace files that may be missing. it can take about 10 minutes to complete.

Hi stan,

Ah in which case I’m not sure what to suggest, it does sound like a windows problem though  if windows is shutting down. I think the only things I could suggest is like someone else recommended a full virus scan, you could also try running malware bytes (which is a free program to clean malware) someone on the list said they had a problem using it, but its always worked fine for me, you could also try shutting down any unnecessary start up programs running at start up, and failing all that the more drastic approach of if you have windows 10 doing a windows reset, but although this will very likely sort the problem it deletes all programs from you’re system in the process so you have to reinstall everything, which is generally a huge pain to do. Sorry I can’t be more help, hope you get it all sorted though.
