Once you find your topic in the JAWS help press enter. Nothing seems to happen, but you can press F6 and the subject matter is there for you to read. Hope this helps.

I have the same thing. It's a Windows problem which is not an easy fix. However, I noticed this weekend that if I answer no to the wait for program to start, then go to the desktop and press insert+es

Navigating the New York Times; turning off inline frames
I took a look and did not find anything for bitmaps myself. The inline frames have nothing but ads so you are not losing any information.
