Re: Having JFW 12 read a phone number as one word

Mike & Barbara In Arcadia <mb69mach1@...>

Hi all,

Thank you Ann for mentioning this little known option . Below is what
Jaws10 & Jaws12 says about Smart Word Reading. I included both because
Jaws10 explains it much better & there might be some list members who don't
have Jaws10 installed

Jaws10;
In previous JAWS releases, when issuing the Say Word command, JAWS would
only read the current word or character when the cursor was positioned on a
text

unit,

such as a compound word, telephone number, date, time, or math equation.
With Smart Word Reading enabled, JAWS now reads the entire text

unit when the Say Word command is issued.

Note: Cursor movement is controlled by the application. So, if Microsoft
Word's cursor normally navigates the entire

text unit as one word or number, then JAWS will read it the same way.
Likewise, if an application, such as WordPad,

navigates through each component of the text unit, then JAWS will read it
the same way.

For example, in the sentence, "She is my sister-in-law," if the cursor is
placed anywhere on the word "sister," JAWS would say "sister." However,

with Smart Word Reading, JAWS will now say the entire compound word,
"sister-in-law."

Likewise, in the sentence, "The appointment was at 2:00 P.M.," JAWS would
say "colon" if the cursor was placed between the digit 2 and the colon.

Now with Smart Word Reading enabled, JAWS will say the entire text unit as
two o'clock.

As a final example, let's look at how JAWS reads a telephone number. If the
cursor is placed between the dash and the 444 in the telephone number
1-800-444-4443,

previous JAWS versions would say, "444." With Smart Word Reading enabled,
JAWS reads the entire telephone number as, "1-800-444-4443."

Jaws12;

Select this check box to have JAWS read the entire text unit, such as a
compound word, telephone number, date, time, or math equation, when using
the Say
Word command. Note: Cursor movement is controlled by the application. So,
if Microsoft Word's cursor normally navigates the entire text unit as one
word
or number, then the text is read in the same way. Likewise, if an
application, such as WordPad, navigates through each component of the text
unit, then
JAWS will read it the same way. This check box is selected by default.

Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Article on Screen Reader Reading Speeds

Mike & Barbara In Arcadia <mb69mach1@...>

Hi All,

I found the information below interesting & thought the list might as well,
since this topic was recently discussed.

This just came across my desk as things do from time to time and it's
something that a few of you might just find interesting as I did after
reading it.

David Ferrin

Listening Speeds Approximation with Window-Eyes and JAWS Screen Reader
Practice Text Documents

Listening Speeds Approximation with Window-Eyes and JAWS

Methodology

In order to determine an approximate words-per-minute test for a screen
reader, we used this process:

1. The screen reader's speed was set to a chosen percentage.

2. A long document was selected of sufficient length for the "Read All"

command to be invoked without running out of text in a two-minute reading
session.

3. A timer was set for two minutes.

4. The timer and the "Read All" command were invoked at the same time.

5. The "Read All" command was stopped when the timer expired.

6. The rest of the document was selected and deleted.

7. The Microsoft Word "Word Count" command was invoked.

8. The number of characters without spaces were found.

9. This number was placed into Windows Calculator.

10. The number was divided by 5 to obtain an approximate average length of
five characters. (Five characters is the average word length in American

English.)

11. The result of this was divided by two to obtain average words per
minute.

12. The deleted text was restored and the process repeated for another speed
rate.

Known factors which influence speed outcomes:

1. By default, the screen reader pauses for a fraction of a second at
sentence punctuation marks, such as commas and periods, in order to give a
better reading experience. This would tend to give a slightly slower average
speed for each percentage.

2. In calculating the number of characters, punctuation of all kinds,
including quotation marks, dashes, and sentence punctuation and other
printable characters were included (spaces were excluded). This would tend
to give a higher character count, and therefore, a higher average speed.

Though this has not been tested, the assumption is that the two variables
tend to cancel out one another.

3. Different versions of the Eloquence synthesizer have yielded different
results. Both Window-Eyes and JAWS have included a proprietary version of
Eloquence within their screen reader in recent releases. These versions have
yielded higher rates from the nonproprietary versions.

4. Probably related to the previous point, we found that current versions
of these two screen readers produced markedly different reading rates at the
same percentages.

The test was performed for Window-Eyes 7 and JAWS 11 with their own
proprietary version of Eloquence.

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

To adjust smart word reading a little more globally (and permanently), go to settings center (one way is with insert plus F-2 and then "S" until you hear "Settings Center")
In the Settings Center search box, type "SMART"
It was on by default.
I just checked.

Ann, thanks actually with keyboard echo set to Words I actually had to turn
OFF smart reading. Sounds weird but it worked.
Thanks

turn on smart reading. That's supposed to treat a phone number as a single
unit.

The hyphens tell JAWS to separate the three sets of numbers. You would

Hi all can anyone tell me what number processing options need to be set
to have JFW read a phone number as one word. For example if I type
617-222-2345 I don't want JFW to speak at all until after I typed the
5.
Hope that makes snese.
Frank

Whatever it ends up being called, I'm sure it will be more bloated with bells and whistles, run a little slower, etc. :)

What Will be the Next Major Release of JAWS?

Dave...

Now, Chris -- you sound so cynical. But I must admit to agreeing with you
for now and willing to be pleasantly surprised. It's been my contention all
along that odd-numbered versions of JAWS are predominantly the best ones. So
therefore I sincerely hope that FS does not skip version 13 in favor of 14.

Chris:

It is a shame, that FS lack the ability in taking a courageous decision, not to add more useless features in the next release of JFW and, instead, concentrate on fixing many of the long-term problems that we as JAWS users have been complaining about for years.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Hi Dave.

I hate to be cynical too, but I remember Jaws for DOS, so I've been around this stuff for awhile.

I still remember ASAP for DOS, and it's a shame it's windows counterpart was too late in arriving to really make an impact or gain traction.

It is going to be 13, you can be sure of it.

Hi.
I've downloaded the latest winamp, but it doesn't work.
I can't access any menu bars or settings, I've tried to set it to classic skin, but that doesn't help.
How do I do to get winamp working?
