Open File Explorer by pressing enter on the, This PC, desktop icon or press the keystroke, Windows key + E.

Find the flashdrive in your list of drives and open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10.

You'll find the scan feature in here.

Good morning: I’m using Jaws with Windows 10, when I plug in a flash drive I get a message that "there's a problem with this drive, Scan the drive and fix it." However, I can't get to the place where I can fix it. How can I get to "scan and fix it?"

Thanks.

Hi Craig,

Does this Simian software have it's own clock?  It sounds like Jaws is capturing another clock since it only does this with the Simian software.  If you open the Settings Center with the Simian software running maybe you can suppress the time announcement by turning off progress bar updates or something.

You could also try switching your speech and sound scheme for this software with the, Insert, Alt + S, keystroke.  Invoke this keystroke with the Simian software running to open your list of speech and sound schemes and try them 1 by 1 to see which might work best for this situation.  The speech and sound schemes can be modified as well.

Greetings,
I am using JAWS 2019 with Windows 7.  I do some work for a local radio
station, using their Simian broadcast software.  JAWS continuously
reads the updated time on the flashing clock, updating every second,
which prevents me from being able to read the log.  I have tried
cycling through the read modes with insert S.  However, even in
highlighted only mode, it continues to read the updating time, even
though the current song is the only highlighted text.
Any ideas for getting JAWS to stop announcing the updating time?
Thank you very much.

For the forms mode problem, try the following:
1. While in Chrome press, Insert + 6, on the number row to open the Settings Center.

2. Down arrow to, Forms mode closed, and right arrow to open.

3. Down arrow to, Select forms mode..., and tap the spacebar to toggle through the 3 options, stopping on, Manual.
Note:  the 3 options are Auto, semi auto and manual.

There are other settings changes you can make in this dialogue depending on what forms mode you choose, so now that you're in the correct place you'll have to make your decisions.

As for the address bar issue I don't know if the forms mode setting was messing with this, but try the keystroke, Alt + D, to take you to the address bar.

I'm having a couple of issues using JAWS with Chrome: firstly, whenever I perform a Google search, JAWS goes into forms mode when it has displayed the list of search results, so I have to press escape before I can navigate through the page. Secondly, CTRL + L isn't taking me to the address bar.

I think I might have had this problem before, but I can't remember what caused it or how I fixed it. Any ideas?

Thank you! I tested it on another Win10 machine running IE11 and it didn't work, but it worked fine on that machine in Chrome. It's an issue with IE11 specifically, not JAWS, as I tried the same functionality without JAWS running and that didn't work either.

More generally, while IE is ending its natural life I think a number of institutions will be retaining it for quite some time. We had a similar thing with IE6, which I was finding on all sorts of Windows machines (in the UK military and health service, for example) years after Microsoft had abandoned it.

Can you be more specific? Is this in File Explorer? Just as an
example, in File Explorer if you want to select three files which are
one underneath another you hold the shift key and press down arrow
until they are selected. However, if you want to select file 1 and 3,
you go to the first file, then hold the control key and arrow down
twice to the third file, then you can either let go of control and
press spacebar to select file 3 or you can continue holding the
control key and press space. If all you want to do is to select two
files you can let go and press spacebar, if you plan to select more
files after selecting the second file you may as well continue holding
it, but deven if you do let go and select file 2 by pressing the
spacebar, you can always hold control again and arrow to more files to
select them, the first two files will remain selected. The point is
that unlike when holding shift and arrowing which also selects the
files, with control you typically have to press the spacebar to select
the files after you get there.

I'm having problems with an installation of JAWS 2020 that doesn't
seem to be managing multi select list boxes properly. It lets me
select multiple items by using shift and the arrow keys, but if I try
to do the same by using control it doesn't work: when I hold down
control and then press the arrow keys nothing happens. I've tried the
numpad arrow keys and the regular arrow keys.

Any ideas what's going on here?

I am not having this issue.  If you havent’ done it in a while, an old fashioned restart of your PC could clear some sluggishness.  Since you said the issue has occurred for a few months, there may be something else going on that I can’t think of.

Hello,

I’m using Jaws 2021, windows10 and Office2016 most recent versions. Since an update to Office a month ago, MS word is sluggish when I do a find by pressing control F. It takes 5-6 seconds before I can enter anything. Then I press enter after typing  in the text. It doesn’t go anywhere and I have to press control F again. Is there something that could be causing this problem?

Thanks,

Kevin

sometimes when this happens to me, unloading (insert+f4) and reloading JAWS clears the problem. you can also press insert+windows+f4 which does the same using one keystroke. it'll take JAWS 15 to 30 seconds to restart if using this keystroke, so be patient.

Apologies, this is in Internet Explorer (yes, Internet Explorer and not
Edge; this PC still runs IE).

I’m expecting things to work as you describe. Using shift to select
adjacent items works fine. Using control and space to select
non-adjacent items doesn’t work.

Addison,

There are several ways to accomplish this. If you or your mom can see which function keys are the volume up and down, that is the fastest way to do it.  You can also use Windows B to access the system tray and arrow to your speakers icon. Click on that and  you can make the adjustment on the dialog that opens.

If you want to adjust the JAWS volume separately from other sounds, you can do it in JAWS Voice settings, or use the layered command Insert Spacebar, then v for volume and  J for jaws to then allow yourself to adjust JAWS with the arrow keys.

Hi again, Addison. Since you are using JAWS 2020, the command which I gave previously, won't work for your version of JAWS. Instead, you will either need to use the function keys that raise and lower your system speaker volume together with the FN key next to your CONTROL key, or you will need to open Control Panel, Sound, press SPACE on your default output device, use CONTROL plus TAB to go to the levels tab, and adjust the speaker level from there. This is assuming that you don't have the "Speaker" icon in your System Tray. If you have the Speaker icon in your System Tray, this is the second easiest way to change the speaker or system volume. As I said above, the easiest way is to use the function keys with the FN key to raise the system volume.
