The menu bar in Firefox does not seem to be always visible
Richard B. McDonald
Hi!
Even though I have the View > Toolbars > Menu Bar “checked” in Firefox, it does not seem to be always visible. When I press only the alt key, nothing happens. However, if I press for example alt+f, then the menu bar *is* visible; and I can then navigate it. How can I make the menu bar always visible?
I am using the latest builds of both JAWS 2019 and Firefox, and running under Windows 7.
Thanks, Richard

Re: Drop Down List in Excel
Combo boxes are, by their very nature, a hybrid between a text box that allows you to type in data and a dropdown box that allows you to select it. As a general rule, typing the first character will get you the first item with that character (if there is more than one), if you then type the second character it will limit the choices to those that share those first two characters.
If you know what the values are in these long lists just start typing, you should soon be limited to one. The best analogy I can give outside excel of the same behavior is the state box in a USPS ZIP Code lookup. If you go to, https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?bycitystate, Then enter anything in the city, tab over to the state, and pick any state where you know that there are multiples that start with the same letter. In my case, Virginia. If I type V in that field the first thing that pops up is "VT - Vermont," if I hit V again it shows "VI - Virgin Islands," and if I hit V again finally "VA - Virginia." If, though I actually type VA it instantly closes to Virginia. This is the sort of behavior you typically see in a combo box, regardless of the context. If you had a Combo Box where the four choices were the male names, "Alexander, Bradley, Brian, Christopher," typing an A would instantly close on the first and a C on the last. A single B would start with Bradley and if you hit it again, shift to Brian. Since both of the B names start with BR you'd get even the same thing typing the first two characters. But typing B R A would immediately bring up only Bradley. In any case, once you're familiar with the entries you typically use, just typing enough of the characters necessary to close on the correct choice is usually the fastest way to get it if the list is very long. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem — neat, plausible, and wrong. ~ H.L. Paul,
I used MS Project manager several years ago. I was able to enter data for
the various steps and sub steps in the project, but was not able to actually
"see" the flow diagram nor the fishbone diagram. With care and lots of trial and
error I was able to use it, but not very efficiently.

Subject: accessible project management/collaboration
software Hi,
So I’m working on a project with some other people , one of the sighted members of the group has suggested we look into some project management software or online collaboration tool where we can all log what we’re doing/working on so others from the group can see exactly what we are all doing and our progress on that work. So just wondering if anyone from this group has used anything like this and has any suggestions for either an online tool or piece of software that would do this and work well with Jaws?

Re: Drop Down List in Excel
Scott Rumery
No it doesn’t. It would seem as though the only way to navigate a drop down list in Excel is either with the up and down arrows or by going to the beginning or end of the list with the home or end keys on the keyboard. You can also use the page up or page down keys, but you cannot quickly jump to an item in the list. I have even tried using the Jaws Find command but it doesn’t work in a drop list.

Hello,
Is there a way for me to quickly jump to an item in a drop down list in Excel? I am having to work with a spreadsheet that has several drop downs that are very long and if I could quickly jump to a particular part of the list then it would make my job a little easier.
Thank You,

The combo box is the easiest to deal with, in my opinion. I know you have no control over how the spreadsheets have been created, but there are slight differences depending on which of the above is actually being used. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem — neat, plausible, and wrong. ~ H.L. thats because you have to reload waterfox the first time so it can detect your screen reader.

another thing, if you switch screen readers while waterfox is running there function keys will not work until you reload waterfox if you are going to switch screen readers you have to do it before waterfox is loaded. then it will work.

Re: What happened to Doug Geoffray,

Hi,
Doug wrote a lot more than just Word Talk. He had a series. He had one called Term Talk, a terminal software and also File Talk which was a great database software. I used it for several things on my Apple IIE.
From what I hear, Doug did not stay with VFO. He is with Microsoft as programming manager in the accessibility department working on Microsoft Narrator. With him there, I expect the Narrator will be the equivalent built-in accessibility to Voice-Over for Microsoft. I am hopeful.

Re: using capslock with the desktop layout.
And for the sake of complete clarity, regardless of keyboard layout, my understanding is that the keyboard shortcuts for both layouts are available in either.
The trick being that what those shortcuts are often differs by more than just using a different modifier key (CAPS LOCK versus INSERT), and you have to use the full command with the syntax for the "shortcut style" chosen. What I'm trying to say above is if some command in Desktop layout were to be INS+Y, and in Laptop layout were to be CAPS LOCK+CTRL+L then you can't just substitute CAPS LOCK in place of INS or vice versa for either shortcut. If it is only the modifier key that differs, then you can. I'm sure someone can confirm/refute the above. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem — neat, plausible, and wrong. ~ H.L.
