Re: unable to read PDF
Ashleigh Piccinino
Hello Kevin
I don’t know about converting A PDF document. However, can you check for me and see if jaws says, “empty document. “ of course, this is when you either up or down arrow through the document. If jaws says, “empty document, “but A cited helper knows there is something on your screen come The document could a scanned image. When pDFs are like this, you can usually press this hotkey. The insert key on your number pad (if you have a regular desktop sized keyboard) and the Space bar is a layered command in jaws. Press these two keys followed by the letter O to get to OCR.You are still not done. Press the D for a document. The screen reader will say, “OCR started. “It might take a while, but your document should come up, reading as if it were in word. Then, you can read through it, select it and pasted into another program such as words, of course after copying, or just hit the escape key. after you are done reading your OCR results, press escape Key. I hope this helps, and sorry for any miss spellings. Other than my instructions, I do not know how to help. Sorry about that. Thank you for your question, and I would be glad to help again if you need it, Ashleigh S Piccinino

Re: unable to read PDF
If you are using Adobe Acrobat Reader do the following:
1. Go to Edit > Preferences, the keyboard shortcut is Control + K 2. In the categories list arrow down to Security (Enhanced) or you can also press “S” 3 times to get there 3. Tab once and you hear “Enable Protected Mode at startup”, if it says this is checked press the spacebar to uncheck it. You will get the following message/prompt: Adobe Acrobat Reader dialog For changes to take effect, you need to manually restart the application. Are you sure you want to continue? 4. Tab to Yes and activate it, then press Shift + Tab 3 times to get to the OK button and activate it. 5. Now close Acrobat Reader and reopen your document.

Hello, I’m using Jaws2018 and Windoes10. I opened a PDF file and Jaws doesn’t read anything. I didn’t even get the message where Jaws recognizes the PDF and gives option to scan it. I tried to save it as as a MS word file and I get the message I can download the Adobe version that allows me to convert. I use to be able to convert and something happened that no longer allows me to do so. Any thoughts of what I can do? Thanks, Kevin

It sounds like it may be opening in Edge over Acrobat. If that’s the case, unfortunately JAWS 2018 won’t read it. You will need to download Acrobat from Adobe’s site.

Hi Randy and Mohith
Thanks for offering to take a look at the page/links for me, that’s very kind and much appreciated. However, the webpage isn’t live yet so I can’t share it, but I’ve also found some other accessibility issues with the theme I am using , due to this and combined with the link issues I mentioned earlier, I have decided to use a different theme .
Again though a huge thanks for the offers of help

I have come across this with links when I am reading the MIT articles. Edge, Chrome and Firefox will just say link but IE says the name of the link...
Funny the oldist "outdated browser is the only one working correctly. So it is not that they arent labled correctly... Not sure why this happens but it is strange.

When you get into quick settings there is a search box. I can never remember the exact wording, so I type "vis" into the search box, and the only result is cell text visibility.

Arrowing through the choices, it is under \Excel Settings\Workbook, Worksheet and Region Settings

Hi Everyone,
Is there a way to have Jaws 2019 announce when text in a cell in Excel 2016 overflows the cell, or is "cropped"? I know that NVDA can do this, and someone told me that Jaws has a setting to enable this feature, but I can't find the setting, if it exists. Any ideas? Thanks, Russell

Re: Outlook Issue Suddenly Cropping Up
Michael Mote
Have you checked in your Outlook settings to make sure that Outlook is set to play a sound when an email arrives? I wonder if the Outlook volume is muted for some reason in your volume mixer. You would need to check that once Outlook is open. Also, you may want to check in the Windows 10 notifications and see if you are set up to receive incoming notifications. Just type notifications in the search box on your Windows 10 computer. Maybe one of these will help you get your sound back.

Hi all.
This doesn’t affect JAWS directly, but I was hoping some of you may have had the same issue and have worked around it.
I had to reinstall Windows 10 on Sunday because it decided it would crash my laptop.
Outlook 2016 is no longer playing a sound when I receive mail. I have checked Outlook sound options, Windows sound options, and I even made sure Outlook was the default program for mail in case that was an issue. I’ve even Googled to an extent, but nothing I’ve done has fixed this problem.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

jaws reading junk
Juan Hernandez
Hi All,
I have noticed for a while now probably since the march jaws 2019 update came out that jaws has been reading letters after the line of text for example,
Screen readers require that… scr scr scr
As you can see its repeting the first few letters after the line of text. This happens in the podcast notification in jaws the summery read only text box, it happens in tw blue in various dialogs etc.
Has anyone encountered this?
Best,
Juan

Two questions about accessing graphs/charts and or accessible price monitoring plugin
Cristóbal
Hello list, Two questions related to the same topic. Does anyone know of an accessible price tracking plug in be it for Chrome or Firefox? I’ve tried CamelCamelCamel and the Honey app and while CamelCamelCamel can give the highest and lowest price for an item in a table format, there doesn’t seem to be info on actual price fluctuations. There does appear to be a graph, but nothing Jaws can read. The Honey app straight up just presents price history as a graph that Jaws doesn’t even appear to access. The second part to my question, is there in fact a way to access these online graphs/charts with a screen reader and somehow convert them to a table quick and easy? Things like thermoform paper and those types of accessible tools are overkill when all you want is to check the trend on a particular item and move on. Using the latest JFW 2019. I also use NVDA from time to time if that matters, but my main screen reader is Jaws. Thanks,
