Re: Backup

Richard,

I have pretty much given up on making assertions about accessibility since things change such that something that had been entirely accessible might become less so to just plain "not."  That being said, if you're trying to make full system image backups and/or separate user data backups for a home system I'd definitely give EaseUS To Do Backup Free a whirl just to see whether it's accessible.

It's what I use not because it's the best (as in most sophisticated and allows the most configuration) backup software out there but because of the ease of use of its interface.  My partner is, how shall I put it, not particularly technically inclined and he can run a routine backup with it because once you set it up it's just a "click and run" affair.

In doing a quick whirl around the main program page with NVDA just now I can easily land on the Recovery, Backup, and Advanced buttons.  I cannot seem to get over to the main column of setup buttons on the left side, but I'm not great with any of the newer navigation methods like Object Navigation, so these may be accessible via a method I don't normally use or could be entirely inaccessible.  In the event that they are entirely inaccessible, if you have assistance to set up your backup schemes you can definitely run them without any assistance, as that pane allows accessibility to all buttons.

Yes, IFW is what you want. There are only two versions for Windows--GUI and CUI. Unless you like command-line-interface-driven things, go for the GUI , which is perfectly accessible. When you install it, go into Settings and enable the accessible checkboxes option. The only screen in the whole system where behavior is a little odd is in the summary screen of twenty-two checkable options. The checkboxes don't show up as checkboxes; rather, an X appears next to each checked option, and you have to use your screenreader's own cursor to read its presence or absence. Try it for a month, then you'll see.

Re: Java update question

Steve Matzura

Accept the update. The JAB is no longer a part of the screenreader. It's built in to Java itself nowadays. If you installed it when you first installed Java and it needs updating, it will do it. I have heard nothing bad about Java since version 7, although I still can't get it to do anything useful on my own systems, but that's probably more a Steve Matzura problem than anything else. If there is a magic to it, no one has figured it  out in thirty-plus years. It's hit and miss, depending on the motivation of the developer or company. Most plead poverty--not enough staff to dedicate a single person to oversee or implement accessibility. But some, like guys like Ross Levi from Station Playlist, or the Weather Watcher guy, or the Tapin Radio guy, just to name a few prominent ones, are not only amenable to talking about accessibility with their users, but put their money where their mouth is and really do it.

That is the one and only way that accessibility becomes, well, more accessible.  Using the correct kind of PR spin doesn't hurt, either.  There are no "big bucks" to be made via accessibility but the polishing of one's reputation that comes from making it a priority is a potential goldmine.  I don't think that either Microsoft or Apple, two of the biggest companies making accessibility a base expectation, are doing so because it improves their bottom line in the conventional sense, yet they're definitely getting something out of it and that's worth noting and encouraging.

Creating corporate cultures where accessibility is an expectation, rather than an afterthought if it's thought of at all, is the way forward.  At the moment, it seems the tide is shifting in that direction, at least for companies where that's practical (and, yes, it's much more difficult for tiny companies with limited resources than it is for companies with multi-billion [or trillion] valuations).  But what the "big ones" do does rub off.

accessibility for firm developing software

Marvin Hunkin <neilmarvin@...>

Hi. yes, accessibility should be from the ground up. Doing a interactive gaming course, from http://www.upskilled.edu.au and using the unity game engine from http://www.unity3d.com, and have been in contact with the development team, and there’s a new tool, not free from the pacello group. And a web enar coming on august 15, about a new tool, where you don’t need jaws installed. Called jaws inspect. About $5,000 for a one year licence and multiple licences. Yes, accessibility should be at the forefront. A person who lost their sight in 2015, and uses jaws, and was a animator and using unity, well, I found a lot of  problems, pitfalls, and then like having a sighted friend to remote as got a group of students and my lecturer, and using the windows 10 skype app, which I am using with windows 10 and jaws 2018. Very accessible. And also able to get sighted help to connect to visual studio. Like there’s a start screen, and does default to the c:\start\users\onedrive\documents folder, and then able to then load the folder in visual studio, and have to use the jaws ocr cursur to read the console, error messages, and to save assets. And the open dialog, once in the editor, does not read with jaws or nvda, even struggles with windows narrator. They are aware of these issues, and are looking to test a project with jaws, have not heard back recently, from the customer support person, and she’s communicating to the development team, there’s a lot of blind game developers, and they said they will make it more accessible, this person danniel has been waiting for improvements for unity three years. So yes, accessibility, developing a large complex project, like a game engine, should put accessibility, at the ground up, and not just an add-in or after thought, then they have to do major modifications. Yes, and wonder I know the x box is accessible with narrator, wonder if the play station 4, has windows narrator as well, and wonder if the Nintendo swift has built in text to speech, and wonder if the latest wi console, has that as well. My two cents worth.marvin from Adelaide, Australia.

Reinstalling an operating system, should be the last thing to be considered, given the amount of time it takes to reinstal the operating system, downloading and installing all the updates, installing all the software and setting everything the way you would like it. Much better to find a way to get rid of the infection. Another solution, is to make regular backups of the system, with programs such as Image for Windows.

Re: microsoft 1 drive not accessible?

If you are using windows 10, go to the system tray and arrow until you find onedrive, and hit enter. Then, arrow until you find settings and hit enter again.
You should be good to go.

Re: microsoft 1 drive not accessible?

If I use Jaws Key+F11 to bring up a list of my system tray icons and press enter on OneDrive it does open up, but instead of arrowing down try to tab until you find Settings and then press enter twice, it doesn't always do anything if you just press enter once.

Hello Sieghard,

Microsoft just announced they had changed their minds due to public opposition.  You will see notes on that further down in your inbox.

What’s the point, it won’t work any more in about 24 or 25 days.

Hi All,

It took me several attempts before I found a download of Classic Skype version 7, in a form where it would not automatically switch to and install version 8.  The link is below.

https://download.skype.com/5d7ac191986ccb485223c4e4e9e3e4ce/SkypeSetupFull.exe

One hint.  When you start the installation, there is a link to “more options”.  Click on this, and there are 2 check boxes for you to decide whether to include the described feature, e.g. make Bing your default search engine.  Click continue, and the installation will go the rest of the way.

Re: Recommended settings for Chrome and JAWS?

Jason White

JAWS 2018 probably includes Chrome-related improvements, so an upgrade would be wise.

I find it useful to turn on smart navigation in JAWS, and set it to “controls and tables”.

Subject: Recommended settings for Chrome and JAWS?

Hey folks. So I’ve been using chrome as default browser for a bit now, and with the exception of one or two things I need for work have pretty much retired IE. I’m wondering if there are any settings I can change to make chrome just that little bit less annoying to use so that I can retire IE completely. My problem is certain sites don’t read quite as well in chrome as they do in IE. I’m not entirely sure if that’s a JAWS problem or a chrome problem, but I’ll accept any changes I can make to either if they help. Using latest chrome and JAWS 18, if that makes a difference. Thanks either way.

Under Windows 10, if I use Windows+B to access the system tray, move to the OneDrive application and press enter, a OneDrive dialog appears.

Jed,
Rick again,
Is there a One Drive icon on your desktop? If so, and if you click on it, it will appear in File Explorer. It is just like another drive on your computer. I have used it for a long time, but don't remember that there were any settings. You can just copy and paste or drag and drop files in it.

Let me know if that makes sense and if it works.
Rick
