Which version of Firefox Quantum works best with JAWS 2019?

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

I am upgrading to JAWS 2019 Home Edition.  My PC runs Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.  I want to install Firefox Quantum, but *which version* of it is best?  I believe I should install the Windows 64 bit version, but is there anything more to this than that?  Seemingly, version 63 is the latest Firefox Quantum for Windows 64 bit, but I think there are other versions, like an “Extended Support Release” or something like that.  Previously, I heard that earlier versions of JAWS did not work well with Firefox Quantum but that these problems have been solved.  Is that right?

Thanks,

Richard

Hay, I rezimble that turkey buzzard remark. LOL My first version of JAWS was JFW 3.2, at least that was the version that was on the computer that I learned how to use MS Office back in 1998 at IVHI in Chicago. When I got married in 2000, my wife had a computer with JFW 3.4 and we shortley upgraded to JFW 4.0.

Re: SMA

I think considering how so many software solutions move to a subscription based model this is a smart move.

One thing I don’t understand, Josh said you can pay $90 a year, $270 for 3 years or $450 for 5 years.

Those 3 and 5 year terms still work out to $90 a year so why would I spend $270 or $450 up front if I can just pay the same $90 a year? I think if Vispero wants to encourage people to buy a 3-year or 5-year subscription they need to make those a bit less expensive.

$90 a year works out to $7.50 a month. I know a lot of people on various lists have complained about the cost of the SMA which was $120 every two years. That works out to $60 a year or $5 a month. Of course if you can now pay $90 a year and get the latest version of Jaws even if you are 3 or 4 versions behind then that is a fantastic deal.

What would make sense to me is if they would charge say $250 for a 3-year subscription, instead of $7.50 a month that would work out to approx. $6.94 a month and approx. $83.33 a year.

Then maybe the 5-year subscription could be $375 which would be $6.25 a month or $75 a year.

I can also understand that they may not want to discount the price for a longer term in which case you should be able to set up a recurring subscription payment where you get a reminder once a year a month or so in advance just as is the case with an Office 365 subscription. Do nothing and your subscription automatically renews and is charged to your credit card.

Sieghard

Anyway my wife and I took advantage of this yesterday since she was still on JAWS V 18 and I didn’t have a version of JAWS on my PC. I commend Vispero for doing this for those who are behind or are on a fixed income like most of here in the US. Folks who use Zoom Text will have this new licensing portal for them on Thursday. I’m happy to have both JAWS and NVDA.

I would have to imagine that the SMA model will be fazed out. Probably just a curtesy for all of us who are on the full licenses to grab the cheaper yearly SMA pricing one last time before the eventual switch over.

I went ahead and upped my SMA since JFW 2019was my last upgrade.

$60 a year now sounds better than $90 or whatever they’re going to charge down the road. Even then, I’d have no issue paying $90 a year for Jaws.

List Rules - Thu, 11/1/18 #cal-notice

main@jfw.groups.io Calendar <noreply@...>

List Rules

When:
Thursday, 1 November 2018
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-04:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

James,
List Admin

Which is awesome. However, is that only for the US? Because that would make me a sad geek.

You get so many keys to put JAWS on multiple devices.

One thing you can do with the yearly version, is that you can take the key off of one machine you are not using, and transfer that key to another computer.

You can do all of this on the portal!

I think that’s available only in the US though. And also, please tell me you can still licence JAWS for multiple devices with this plan, or that’d be reason alone to keep the SMA.

You do not need an SMA anymore. you could subscribe to jaws for $90 per year, $270 for 3 years, and $450 for 5 years of jaws and move your licenses between any 3 computers, authorise and dee-authorise computers all on your own with the new license platform found in the freedom scientific e-store.

Hi,

I use Thunderbird and for some reason, yesterday and continuing today, Thunderbird thinks more than half of my incoming messages are junk mail - including most of them from this list. Can someone tell me if this is a concern, and if not how to step by step reset , or cancel, or whatever, it takes to convince Thunderbird that all of you are not threats to my computer!

Elaine

Hi Michael. I heard you on the last FS Cast live from last via podcast.

You could either buy a new SMA, or you could subscribe to jaws for $90 a year, $270 for 3 years or $450 for 5 years of jaws.

Hi all I started with JAWS 14 when I got my computer in the spring of 2013 and enjoy using it. Yes nothing is perfect but JAWS is a part of my daily life and and need always to learn more about it. Louise and princess Kiara

I started with JAWS 18 back on May 15, 2017 when Windoe-Eyes was discontinued. Since I had the latest version of Window-Eyes, this was a free update for me. Now I am upd to JAWS 2019.

Stanley, thanks for reminding me of the dark day in May when Window-Eyes was put to rest.
I too started with Jaws then, and had two SMAs left with Window-Eyes which were transferred to Jaws. So, I just used my last one for 2019.
