the 20 digit authorization code should be written on the sleeve of

the cd or maybe on the cd itself.

you also need to look in the about dialog box of jaws to retrieve the

locking code for that computer as well.

Hello,

I received an email with three attachments …… they are word docs, not PDF.  When I open the attachment Jaws says “protected view” and I’m unable to read the document.  Could somebody please help?  It is very important and urgent that I read these attachments.  I’m using Jaws 18, Windows 10 and Outlook 2016.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. yeah, I thought it was odd too that the auth number wasn’t on the CD case, she says it does have the serial number in brail and has had two sighted people check the case  and apparently no authorisation number anywhere  it just says to run the authorisation CD. Thanks for the support email though, I had a feeling that would probably be the only route for getting a copy of the auth number, but thought I’d ask on the off chance there was another way.

Hi Paul,

I don’t remember all the details but it can be done from the Freedom authorization web site. You need  to have the serial number when you go to that site and the locking code that is  located in the “about” section of the JAWS context menu.

When you enter these 2 pieces identifying you, Freedom will issue a one time authorization number which is a long code and will need to be copied and pasted in the appropriate box when you run the authorization from JAWS.  I’ve done it a few times but that was a while back and I don’t remember the exact steps but this should give what you need to get it done.

Re: how can i make sure that internet explorer is the browser that is used when reading documentation about i lock license management?

Is internet explorer set as your default web browser?   If not, that's an option.

Also, if you generally prefer another web browser, but want IE just for this, then let the link(s) open in that other web browser, open IE, and copy and paste the link(s) as necessary.

Yes.  Under Control Panel, I believe the item is Default Programs.  I don't have a Win7 machine to check at the moment, but there is definitely a control panel item for setting the Default Programs for specific file types.

I also believe that the "quick trick" that Sieghard mentioned also works under Windows 7, and it's much easier and faster.

Hi, Kevin. In your search box, type:

default

This should bring up a category called:

Default app settings, System settings

Press ENTER on that.

Now TAB past all the apps, and even past Set Defaults by Filetype, and past Set Defaults by Protocol. Then there should be a category like:

Set defaults by app Link

Press ENTER there, and you should have a list of apps you can arrow through. If you have Adobe Reader DC installed, it should be in that list, and you can make it the default.

Subject: PDF file automatically goes into Edge

Hello, I downloaded a PDF file from my bank’s web site. I put my cursor on the file and pressed enter. It opens the file into Microsoft Edge. Jaws cannot read anything. I even put the cursor on the file and used the Jaws OCR function and that didn’t work. Do I need to turn on or off certain settings? OR is there a way for it to go into Acrobat reader?

Bill,  I have uninstalled Firefox, unplugged my internet, reinstalled Firefox without the maintainance and deleted those 2 updater files from the Mozilla folder in Program Files, closed Firefox, plugged in my internet, opened an email with a link to a news site and it worked.  I now have Mozilla Firefox and JAWS 18.0.27 running together.  JAWS ke+Control+V tells me that the version of Firefox is 52.0.  Granted, I am probably volnerable to malware or something, but it is working again.

Hi, Marty. It should have been version 52. It updated you before you got the options changed. That is why you are getting the incompatible announcement.

Hi, Marty. Can you do the following keystroke, and report back which version of Firefox is installed. It sounds like it is updating to Version 60, and not staying with Version 52. Try the following keystroke when firefox is open:

JAWS key plus CONTROL key plus V

This should give you the version which is actually installed on your computer right now.

I managed to instal the 32 bit version of the Firefox version that you sent to me, but I still get the following message when I try to hit a link from a email message.  “Display of tab content is disabled do to incompatibility between Firefox and your accessibility software.  Please update your screen reader or switch to Firefox extended support release.”

Hi, Marty. In order for you to use JAWS with Firefox 60 and up, you need the latest version of JAWS, which is JAWS 2018. JAWS 16, 17, and 18 are incompatible with Firefox 60 and up. These versions of Firefox are called Quantum. They contain a version of Sandbox which causes Firefox not to be able to react with JAWS versions earlier than 2018. They had to do some intensive reworking of JAWS to get it to function properly with the newer versions of Firefox. In order for you to use Firefox with JAWS 18, you would need to install an earlier version of Firefox ESR. I will provide a couple of links to the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox ESR in case you wish to downgrade your version of Firefox.

Firefox ESR 52, English US 32-bit:

Firefox Setup 52.0esr.exe

Firefox ESR 52, English US 64-bit:

Firefox Setup 52.0esr.exe

HI,  I am new to this group and am having a similar issue with JAWS and Firefox.  When I open Firefox, I get a message saying that Tabs are incompatible with my adaptive software or my version of Firefox.  I have installed JFW 18 and Firefox 62.  There is no problem using NVDA and Firefox.  What is going on here?  Is it a Windows problem?  I am still running Windows 7.

Hi. Another thing I have found is that, if you uninstall Firefox, old profiles are left behind. So, I had to go into

Users\”Username”\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

and delete all the old profiles which were left behind.

HI All,

I was wondering if you have noticed with firefox 61, and now 62 that jfw locks up or I guess firefox locks up all of the time, it happens randomly, but it happens so much that I made chrome my default web browser.

Has anyone experienced this?

Best,

Juan Hernandez
