If you are using the ESR version of Firefox, and

Hey Bill.

Thanks for providing those links, but, unless
I’m wrong, once installed, those Firefox 52
versions will try to update to 60, which is the
version the ESR branch is currently on. This was
what we were warned about last year; we could
continue to use ESR until September of 2018, at
which point it would also be switched to Quantum. This has now happened to me.

Hi, Marty. In order for you to use JAWS with
Firefox 60 and up, you need the latest version
of JAWS, which is JAWS 2018. JAWS 16, 17, and 18
are incompatible with Firefox 60 and up. These
versions of Firefox are called Quantum. They
contain a version of Sandbox which causes
Firefox not to be able to react with JAWS
versions earlier than 2018. They had to do some
intensive reworking of JAWS to get it to
function properly with the newer versions of
Firefox. In order for you to use Firefox with
JAWS 18, you would need to install an earlier
version of Firefox ESR. I will provide a couple
of links to the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of
Firefox ESR in case you wish to downgrade your version of Firefox.

FS has done it. Just for JAWS 2018 though.

It would have been nice if they had given that functionality to JAWS 18 users, at least, but I guess that isn’t their business policy. JAWS 18 stopped being updated sometime late last year and they decided not to include functionality for Firefox. So yes, they are basically forcing you to upgrade if you want to continue using FF in combination with JAWS.

NVDA had some hitches at first but when I tried it with Firefox 57, the first “quantum” release, I thought it worked rather well, and apparently it’s only gotten better since. I have Firefox 60 on my system now but haven’t tested it for much. Because I’m still kind of stuck on JAWS, you see. *grins*

I’m surprised, I didn’t realise there were so many people here using JAWS versions other than 2018. Thought I was one of the few. I just caved and bought an upgrade. Luckily I was still able to use the plan from my old work.

Re: where can i get firefox 52?

JM Casey <crystallogic@...>

I’m sure you can find it on the internet, but I would ask, do you really want to?

Support for Firefox 52 has ended. This means you won’t even receive security updates. You’d be better off using Internet Explorer 11, now; at least any holes will keep being plugged until 2020.

I love Firefox and am also using JAWS 18 myself, so I’m just as chagrined as everyone else, but at least there’s NVDA. Mozilla never had any intention of continuing to support V. 52 indefinitely. The ESR branch just meant you would be held off from Quantum for a year and some change. Now that’s happened, and it’s Quantum or no Firefox, unless you want to leave things at risk on your system.

The other thing is that even without automatic updates turned on, Firefox will keep asking you to update. That automatic update option is turned on by default, so literally as soon as you download the Firefox 52 version you want to use on your system, it will try to update to version 60.

Version 60 is the new ESR by the way. They’re at version 62 on the main branch now, I believe.

Hi, Marty. It should have been version 52. It updated you before you got the options changed. That is why you are getting the incompatible announcement.

Hi, Marty. Can you do the following keystroke, and report back which version of Firefox is installed. It sounds like it is updating to Version 60, and not staying with Version 52. Try the following keystroke when firefox is open:

JAWS key plus CONTROL key plus V

This should give you the version which is actually installed on your computer right now.

Hi, Marty. In order for you to use JAWS with Firefox 60 and up, you need the latest version of JAWS, which is JAWS 2018. JAWS 16, 17, and 18 are incompatible with Firefox 60 and up. These versions of Firefox are called Quantum. They contain a version of Sandbox which causes Firefox not to be able to react with JAWS versions earlier than 2018. They had to do some intensive reworking of JAWS to get it to function properly with the newer versions of Firefox. In order for you to use Firefox with JAWS 18, you would need to install an earlier version of Firefox ESR. I will provide a couple of links to the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox ESR in case you wish to downgrade your version of Firefox.

Yes, that might work, Marty. This is because the file link I sent you is for the full executable, not just a stub or program that goes out on the Internet to get the actual program.

What you will want to do, though, is to set firefox to never update, set it not to update with a background service, uninstall the Mozilla Maintenance service, and remove two files from your Mozilla folder in Programs X86. These files are:

updater.exe

and

updater.ini

Thanks for providing those links, but, unless I’m wrong, once installed, those Firefox 52 versions will try to update to 60, which is the version the ESR branch is currently on. This was what we were warned about last year; we could continue to use ESR until September of 2018, at which point it would also be switched to Quantum. This has  now happened to me.

Yes, it’s silly.

The way I see it though you have two options if you want to continue using Firefox.

Upgrade JAWS, or use another screen-reader.

NVDA works extremely well, you will just have to get used to it.

You could also try Chrome. It still works with JAWS 18, at least, as far as I know., and it is fast and snappy.

So yes, there are always options.

This stuff with Firefox did not come out of the blue. We had over a year to prepare for Quantum if we were on the ESR branch.

I know.

So the only reasonable choice really seems to be, stop using firefox, or use NVDA.

Or pay for another JAWS upgrade of course. Which I actually just did. Can’t say it was just for the sake of Firefox (there are other browsers after all) but it definitely helped give me a little push.

If you are using the ESR version of Firefox, and you don’t turn off the updates, it will eventually update to version 60 ESR, and that one won’t work unless you have JAWS 2018.

But, if you do that, I don’t think you’ll receive security and maintenance updates either. Given all the vulnerabilities in browsers that are getting reported these days (saw one about firefox just this morning), I don’t know that that’s a good idea. I personally had mine set to ask me to update, but I never deferred the updates for too long for this reason.

Hey Bill.

Firefox ESR 52, English US 32-bit:

Firefox Setup 52.0esr.exe

Firefox ESR 52, English US 64-bit:

Firefox Setup 52.0esr.exe

HI,  I am new to this group and am having a similar issue with JAWS and Firefox.  When I open Firefox, I get a message saying that Tabs are incompatible with my adaptive software or my version of Firefox.  I have installed JFW 18 and Firefox 62.  There is no problem using NVDA and Firefox.  What is going on here?  Is it a Windows problem?  I am still running Windows 7.

Hi. Another thing I have found is that, if you uninstall Firefox, old profiles are left behind. So, I had to go into

Users\”Username”\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

and delete all the old profiles which were left behind.

HI All,

I was wondering if you have noticed with firefox 61, and now 62 that jfw locks up or I guess firefox locks up all of the time, it happens randomly, but it happens so much that I made chrome my default web browser.

Has anyone experienced this?

The context key is an unsung wonder of Windows. I was teaching a blind student who needed a laptop  to use with a screen reader. The tech person knew just the right thing and it was ordered without ever asking me. Yup, no context key. When I went online to see if there might be a key combination that was an equivalent, I found there was none. At the same time, I discovered the angry outcries from system administrators and coders. I never thought just how much those professionals relied on that one little key. It is also a surprise when I find a skilled user who relies on a screen reader and has had training, who has no idea wat the context key is and what it can do. It is rare that desktop keyboards come missing it, but not so with laptops. If any of you are considering a laptop, be sure the Vonder-key is there.

The application key is highly useful.  It is the equivalent of clicking the right mouse button, it offers you a context menu of things you can do where you are.  Most people do not use it enough.  On desktop computers it is the key to the left of the right-hand control key.  I would try to avoid buying a laptop that is devoid of this key, but some are.  You can get the same result with shift+f10, and you can reassign keys with programs such as KeyTweak to give a deprived laptop an application key.

Heya folks,

Have bought a new HP laptop Envy, doesn’t seem to have an apps key, is there another alternative or combo keys that can do the same thing?

Cheers,

if your JAWS is running from the system tray, press insert+j, then down
arrow to and right arrow on utilities, down arrow to and enter on sound
cards, and then arrow to and enter on the sound device you want.

if you're running JAWS as an application, press insert+j, press alt,
then u and o, and enter on the sound device you want.

Hi, Marty. We won’t be able to send you an executable for an Internet browser for a couple of reasons.

1. Most Internet browser executables are too large to attach to an email.

2. Many email providers won’t let executable files through. One example of this is gmail.

i thank you all for your suggestions, but this is silly.  I’m not paying another $1,000 for a JFW version just to get Firefox to work.  There has to be another browser that works with the version that I have.  Could someone please send me the executable for a browser that I can install.  Don’t send a link, as I do not have internet.
