I've worked on multiple occasions with graduate students who are getting reading assignments in PDF format, but often in image scanned PDF format, I have had to teach them how to OCR them outside the screen reader for the sake of long term convenience.  I've also tried to teach them how to teach their instructors about the importance of actually OCR scanning these files and saving the resulting text layer in them so that blind students in the future won't hit this barrier.  It's so simple to do in most cases and once it's done you just use that OCRed version of the file going forward.  In the case of documents like the legal one I described above, someone sighted can print it out, trim off or fold away the template part that is not really actual content, then scan it using OCR when doing so.  If they want to keep the original numbered version for "sighted reference" and the specially prepared version for screen reader users it's simple to do so.

The other option is to dig through the sound card's drivers in device manager to see if there is an option to turn off the power saving.  It could also be something in the advanced settings.   power section of control panel I don't think it has a thing to do with microsoft, it is a sound driver issue and those were likely written by the manufacturer of the sound chip.  I have a set of usb speakers that have this feature built in, therefore I don't use them as intended.

As some of you may remember, I’m continuing to set up a new Dell Windows 10 computer with Jaws.

 

The computer has an Intel I7 processor, 16 gigabytes of ram, a 12 gigabyte solid-state drive, and a 1 terabyte mechanical hard drive.

 

I mention this right from the start, because this computer should have plenty of horse power to work well with Jaws.

 

I have noticed that, when typing something, after I stop using the computer for 30 seconds or so, I do not get Jaws feedback until I press at least four or five keys.  In other words, there’s a considerable delay until Jaws starts speaking again.

 

I am thinking this is a Jaws issue, but am not totally sure.

 

I’m currently using Jaws 2018, and plan to upgrade to Jaws 2019 soon, although I’m a bit hesitant to do so right now because of other known problems with Jaws 2019 and MS Word.

 

Are there some settings I should look at to try to address this issue?

Real text can be edited, in a text editor. Or a word processor, if the
format is something like .docx or .rtf. A picture or photo of text displays
the text perfectly, but the text cannot be manipulated at all, just viewed.
And of course without taking some action, a screen reader cannot read a
picture of text.

Kendra,
When people refer to real text they are talking about actual ASCII based text which is the kind of text that was entered in a word document or some other editor.
Though this kind of text can have font and other attributes associated with it; you can navigate and read it with jaws because they are discrete elements.
When folks talk about picture text. They are referring to text that is literally just a picture of the text. The letters in that picture are simply objects just like any other object in a picture. The only way a blind person can read those would be to use OCR to do recognition on that picture. The caveat being OCR does not always render exact format, however you would usually get enough of the text to be able to glean something out of it. The reason we encounter these pictures of text, is due to many folks finding it easy to simply use a scanner to scan an image of a document into a PDF file.

 I would try installing NVDA because it’s a free screen reader and it’s actually better than Windows Narader. Since you are trying to install JAWS, I would totally install NVDA first so that you have a relayable screen reader. Of course, that’s not counting any sound card problems.

I have just recently updated Windows 10, and have also updated Windows Defender, my antiviral program.  When I try to examine the scan history, JAWS will not work.  When I get to the Windows Defender Scan Center, I hit the enter key when I hear Viral Protection.  As soon as I do, JAWS says “Link, Scan History.”  When I hit the enter key, nothing seems to happen.  If any of you use Windows Defender, can you tell me what to do to resolve this?  By the way, I am using JAWS 2019.

As some of you may remember, I’m continuing to set up a new Dell Windows 10 computer with Jaws.

 

The computer has an Intel I7 processor, 16 gigabytes of ram, a 12 gigabyte solid-state drive, and a 1 terabyte mechanical hard drive.

 

I mention this right from the start, because this computer should have plenty of horse power to work well with Jaws.

 

I have noticed that, when typing something, after I stop using the computer for 30 seconds or so, I do not get Jaws feedback until I press at least four or five keys.  In other words, there’s a considerable delay until Jaws starts speaking again.

 

I am thinking this is a Jaws issue, but am not totally sure.

 

I’m currently using Jaws 2018, and plan to upgrade to Jaws 2019 soon, although I’m a bit hesitant to do so right now because of other known problems with Jaws 2019 and MS Word.

 

Are there some settings I should look at to try to address this issue?

Many sighted people genuinely don't know the difference between photo-text and 'real' text (as we may call it), unless it is explained to them.

.JPG files can vary quite a bit in resolution, which would affect the quality of the text (if any) gleaned from converted OCR.

They are only images, yes. But sometimes they are images of
text. Why anybody would do that is beyond me, unless of course
someone took a picture of--for example--a label and wanted to send it
to someone else.

I have had good experience with this. Following Don's suggestion, without opening the file press the applications key and arrow to "recognize with JAWS" or just type the letter J. For me, it worked like a charm!

If you are sure that a jpg file has text, you can OCR it with the onboard OCR in JAWS.

Using the application key and highlighting the jpg file, press the letter j and it should work.

John, try pressing insert+spacebar, o, f. I'm not sure if the JPG needs
to be opened with an image editor like Paint or the OCR commands can be
issued on the file without opening it first.

the synopsis for this command is "Captures an image from the selected
file in Windows Explorer and recognizes the text from the image using
the OCR component."
