As an express VPN user I can tell you unfortunately Netflix gets blocked often where I had to restart the movie or content  I’m viewing to continue.

Every country has an identity, history, custom, and culture. It’s a unique landscape in determining how its people Live, work, and play.

Hi, Dave. Yes, some VPN's will allow you to stream sites that are restricted from your actual country of origin, but as far as I know, they have to be a premium VPN such as Express VPN.

Hi, Ed. This only configures the VPN native to Windows. It doesn't configure the third-party VPN that is inaccessible. Besides that, the VPN that is native to Windows doesn't unblock streams that are blocked from the user's country of network origin.

Hi Stew,

As long as your VPN provider of choice lets you see its relevant settings, then you can key them in manually into Windows.

This is a bit more work but it's no more complicated than setting up an email account manually, and the massive advantage is that you don’t need to care whether your VPN provider’s software is accessible or worry whether they might break it during an update.

Cheers,

Ed

Accessing comments and edits in Google docs with JAWS

Rahul Bajaj

Hi everyone,

At my current workplace, I am required to collaborate a great deal
with my colleagues using Google docs. I am wondering if anyone has any
suggestions as to how comments and edits can be accessed with JAWS in
an efficient and seamless manner.

I found a video by Freedom Scientific on accessing comments in google
sheets. The two commands the speaker suggested for adding new comments
and viewing the comment discussion thread aren't working for me. These
are alt+control+m and alt+control+shift+a respectively. When I press
these keystrokes, nothing happens. Screen reader support is enabled.

I use JAWS 2021, Chrome 91.0.124.

Warmly,
Rahul

Re: re jaws and vpn's

Hi Dave,

Theoretically yes, and being able to stream things from other countries is my primary use case.

However, different broadcasters are more or less efficient about cracking down on VPN use. You may find yourself needing to try different in-country servers offered by your provider if one doesn’t work, so it's best to go with a provider with lots of servers in the country whose content you’re interested in accessing.

The BBC have become really annoying though. On mobile platforms at least, they now go off location services, making the VPN ineffective. I haven’t checked what they do on the PC.

Cheers,

Ed

preventing the jaws ilm auto activation

Shankar.C

Hello all, greetings.

Hope everyone is doing good at this tough time.

I’m using the jaws 2021 internet license and windows 10 on my dell machine, and purchased the jaws annual subscription recently.

After reinstalling the jaws, the screen reader is getting activated with ilm automatically. I also deleted the fs folder from the program files and  programme data. Also deleted the registry key from the registry editor. So, can someone tell me how to prevent the automatic activation with the ilm?

Here is his response:

Hi Richard,

Not at all. There are currently two options and I expect that to continue.

If you are in ILM and current, maintaining a two year SMA is an option today. $150 is retail and you can get it during the show for $120. Pretty good deal.

For those who have let their license lapse, or don't own one, than paying annually with the Portal solution will likely be less expensive and thousands of customers have gone that direction.

IN response to Gerald’s statement below, I wrote Eric Damery directly on Sunday, July 4, and received a response today.

Here is my question to him:

Good morning, or afternoon; whenever you read this,

On one of the Jaws lists, the issue of to SMA or not to SMA has been coming up because of the sale.

It is being said that the SMA is going to be faded out and everyone wil be forced into the annual license.

Is that true?

Here is his response:

Hi Richard,

Not at all. There are currently two options and I expect that to continue.

If you are in ILM and current, maintaining a two year SMA is an option today. $150 is retail and you can get it during the show for $120. Pretty good deal.

For those who have let their license lapse, or don't own one, than paying annually with the Portal solution will likely be less expensive and thousands of customers have gone that direction.

Eventually, the SMA option is expected to be phased out, and all JAWS users will be switched to the annual subscription option, which will be more profitable for Freedom Scientific.

Vaughan Dodd

I know that my reply to this is coming late, and maybe things have moved on.

I live in New Zealand, and my dealer has advised that there is no advice regarding this. I have purchased my SMA feeling a bit pressured by the discussion on the list. (Nobody’s fault though) as it is Freedom Scientific Vispero sparked speculation.

It is possible to imagine a period in my computer usage behaviour beyond  JAWS so two years of license ownership suffices for me at present.

Richard, if you have an occasion to email Eric again, could you ask him if he has any date as to when sales like below will be offered to Canadians?  The subscriptions to JAWS have been around for years, yet Canadians still have to purchase the SMA rather then going the subscription route. Time and time again the response is, “It will be available in Canada eventually.”  This reminds me of a phrase decades ago.  “Some of you are thinking about … and next year you will still be thinking about it.”

Re: cannot identify speaker using Zoom

Mario

Jonathan, I did try insert+control+escape to reeinitialize the scripts, but it didn't work. I still recieved the "unknown script call" message. I looked at the script by pressing insert+numrow 0 and the actual script is not there, but when I pressed control+l to get a list of the scripts, the ZoomNotifyCurrentSpeaker was the last listed. and when I pressed the ok button, I recieved
"Script Not Found dialog
ZoomNotifyCurrentSpeaker is located in the documentation file (jsd) but not in the script file (jss). Do you want to remove it from the documentation file?" of course I pressed the no button, but the strange thing is there is no documentation file with the name ZoomSoftware.JSD to be found anywhere.

There is a simpler way then completely restarting JAWS. You can type I believe insert+control+escape to reload the scripts for the current application.

Since I'm not in a meeting either, it might be ctrl+f2, but I don't think so. it is a Zoom command to identify the speaker. JAWS is using the command to replay chats, so the Zoom keystroke is unavailable without JAWS passthrough.

Cheers,

Ed

So, the Jaws script is just invoking that function without having to press the bypass key.
Or, it is pressing bypass and control+2 for you.

The keystroke is designed to announce the name of the person currently speaking in the Zoom Meeting.
As a previous poster noted what you will actually hear is the name of the login name - so if you are using another person's account / device this is what will be announced.

You have almost certainly tried this already but forcing Jaws to restart - that is Jaws key windows F4 normally clears script errors for me. Unfortunately forcing Jaws to restart in this mode is pretty slow.
