Re: Outlook, JAWS 17, and email attachments

Van Lant, Robin

There are cases when the sender can attach the document into the body of the text.  I think it’s when using RTF format.  I rarely see this, but some people like it because they can place an icon to the attachment in a specific spot in the text of their email.   For example, some sighted people do this because they want to show which attachment relates to a particular part of their message, especially if they are including multiple attachments.  I suppose others just do it because that’s the way their email client is set up.  In either case, I then go to the File menu in Outlook and select the option to save all attachments.  It’s not ideal, but it’s more efficient that wondering if you’ve found the attachments.

Hi All,

I have recently encountered an issue with only some email senders. I have one particular person who sends emails with meeting agendas and minutes attached. When I read the email preview in my inbox, it tells me there is an attachment. However, when I open the message and try to backspace to open the attachment, it isn’t there. I have also tried insert + A to bring up a list of attachments, and I get a message telling me there are no attachments in the message. The only way to access the attachments seems to be if I save them first.

I am using JAWS 17, and we use Office 365 at work.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Thanks so much,

Cynthia

Occasionally I get the same message when I try the JAWS key A  to get to the list of attachments in an open message.

If I do a shift tab from the top of the message body, it puts me in the attachment list.

Try that.

Hi Tom,

This sounds like Windows updated your soundcard with a gineric driver and in doing so it took away your Realtech equalizer but also in doing this, you can't roll back your driver because Windows sees this gineric driver as the latest driver.  I've had this happen in the past, and the bad sound you're now getting is because you don't have the Enhancements available that help make Realtech sound good.  You need to get the Realtech drivers that came with your computer and reinstall them.  This is only a personal opinion coming from the same type of situation but, using a desktop computer and not a laptop.

Hi, Tom. You switch from digital to analog by switching your Speaker output in the same place you are already looking, Control Panel>Sound>Playback. Look at which output is set as your default sound device. Usually the analog is the uppermost device, with the digital output below that. Be careful about doing this, because if your speakers connect to your sound card via a USB, you want to leave it connected via the digital output. If your speakers are connected via a cord that looks like a cord to a pair of headphones, you probably want analog output. This usually requires that you switch the jack to which the speakers are connected. One uses Spacial output, the other does not. This is the reason you are losing sound when you try to turn off Spacial Sound. If you are connected to the correct jack, you won't lose sound when you remove the Spacial Sound effect.

Lowering the system volume does not lessen the distortion.

Is there anything I can do to solve this issue?

Once again, I’m using Windows 10 version 1809 on this Dell laptop.

Hi Tom,

Try the following:

1. Open the Control Panel, go to the Sounds link and press enter.

2. Control + Tab to Playback devices and select the Realtech soundcard.

3. Tab to, Properties, and press the spacebar and Control + Tab to the Enhancements page / tab.  Here's where you'll find what you're looking for.

try checking your sound card settings. most windows versions have an option to turn off all sound enhancements. this will improve speech clarity. but this will also remove a lot of base when playing music.

No, I don’t think all other sounds are distorted.

At least I haven’t found that to be the case so far.

Hi, Tom. It sounds as if you may be using digital output rather than analog output. Sometimes, depending upon which jacks you are using, you may lose sound when turning off spacial effects when using digital output.

Re: Distorted Jaws Speech After Dell Update

Bill White <billwhite92701@...>

If you are connected to the correct jack, you won't lose sound when you remove the Spacial Sound effect.

it won't show the name of the card. it says something like digital
speakers and default for the one that is being used. then click on
properties.

Hi Tom,

Try the following:
1. Open the Control Panel, go to the Sounds link and press enter.
2. Control + Tab to Playback devices and select the Realtech soundcard.
3. Tab to, Properties, and press the spacebar and Control + Tab to the
Enhancements page / tab. Here's where you'll find what you're looking for.

try checking your sound card settings. most windows versions have an
option to turn off all sound enhancements. this will improve speech
clarity. but this will also remove a lot of base when playing music.

Hello, everyone.

I just did a Dell update to my Windows 10 laptop, and now my Jaws
speech sounds rather tinny and is very distorted.

Lowering the system volume does not lessen the distortion.

Is there anything I can do to solve this issue?

I’m using the latest build of Jaws 2019 here.

Hi Rick,

Try this:

1.            Press Alt R then t followed by d.

2.            Use the up/down arrow keys to find the ‘All markup’ option, then press enter or escape.

3.            You should then be back in the main document.

4.            Press Shift, Control and Apostrophe simultaneously and use your up/down arrows to read the comments. Pressing escape or tabbing to ‘Ok’ should put the focus on where the comment is but you may have to go up and down with the arrow keys to get Jaws to read both the text and comment.

This link has some good info on using screen readers to access comments.

Hi all,

I have a Microsoft Word document that is being reviewed with comments added by all parties. I receive this as an attachment and for example, arrowing down, I hit the date line upon the cover page. It tells me comment and the initials of the individual commenting and the number of the comment within the document. For example, Jaws says comment abc1 then the date. Another example is within the table of contents, #10 for example is blah blah blah on page blah blah blah. The beginning of this line, Jaws says comment abc2 then the title of this section and the page number that it is on/in..

How do I find the comments? There is obviously something hidden, the said comment, but how to get jaws to read the comment? Hitting enter does not read it nor is anything seen upon the document, visually that is.

Thanks for your help,

Rick

but I still have to enter a lot of supplier invoices and
process payments either by printing cheques or recording credit card

enter the sales into the accounting system
using a so-called zReport which my point of sale system

and on account payments, the amounts of what was received by Visa,
Mastercard, Debit Card, American Express, Cash,
Cheque, gift certificates and all that. In any case, Ted
suggested I could use the iOS app which is very accessible, but in
some cases there is a bit of typing involved when I enter the
ddetails of invoices for products we receive and we
all know how efficient typing on an iOS device is compared to
typing on a PC with a keyboard. All in all for me Sage 50 currently
still is the better and more efficient solution although I have few

To me it is very accessible, but I know Sage 50 like the back
of my hand because I have been using it and its previous version,
Simply Accounting, for well over 20 years.

There are things you have to do with the Jaws cursor,
sometimes the touch cursor and under Windows 10 you are generally
better off not to use the traditional accessibility display driver
which is still the default. The new so-called
$B!H(BGDI Hooking$B!I(B method reads more in Sage, for
example, if I lookup a transaction I entered in the purchases
journal or bring up a trial balance or vendor aged report then I can
read this information with the Jaws cursor if I don$B!G(Bt use the
accessibility display driver, if I use it the Jaws cursor
only reads blank. You can of course get around this as well by
bringing up the report and then press Alt + F followed by
$B!H(BO$B!I(B which is the command to $B!H(BOpen in Excel$B!I(B. It
will ask
you to save the file, but once you do Excel opens and loads
whichever report you have on the screen. If I have to really do a
lot of detailed checking of data and maybe search for something this
is my preferred method.

Also, the main screen of Sage does not read at all, this is
where you select if you want to use the General Journal, Bank
Reconciliation, the Purchases or Payments modules/journals etc. I
know that if I open Sage I have to tab 5 times
for the general journal, 6 times for bank reconciliation, 7
times for the Suppliers list, 8 times for purchases and 9 times for
payments.

Somebody who wasn$B!G(Bt as familiar with the program and who
tried to use it for the first time would probably be very frustrated
and conclude that it is largely inaccessible.

I haven$B!G(Bt upgraded because I was sick and tired of
paying them hundreds of Dollars every year for their so-called
support which I never use and to get a new version which essentially
was no different than the previous one. I also used to
use their payroll module and during that time I had no choice
because my annual payment also included the updates to the tax
tables for Canada and so on. But for some years now I use a payroll
service called Payworks where all we have to
do is log in and enter each employees hours and they do the
rest. A few days later (I do payroll every 2 weeks) the wages are
auto-deposited into each employees bank account, Payworks does the
monthly payments to the government for
employment insurance, Canada Pension Plan and the income tax
deductions and if an employee quits they file the Record of
Employment and all that. I am a member of the Canadian Federation
for Independent Business and as such I get a
pretty big discount for this service, it only costs I think
$11.95 per pay period (26 per year) and 99 Cents per employee for
the auto deposit etc.

If you need a comprehensive accounting solution and are not
invested in one yet I would absolutely recommend Quickbooks. They
have an accessibility department and have done a lot to make their
online solution which works via a monthly
subscription accessible. If you want to use their desktop
version you do have to pay for scripts which some company developed.
Intuit also sponsors Aira so if you use their software or service
you can call Aira for free to get help with
anything. The person you want to contact about accessibility is Ted Drake:

I use Outlook and Excel all the time, often have several
Google Chrome tabs/windows open plus usually
Sage 50 accounting and my point of sale software and I often
go weeks without a Jaws crash. I am not saying I have some issues
with Windows 10, I do and they are mostly related to the fact that I
can$B!G(Bt read some stuff with the Jaws
cursor which I used to be able to read under Windows 7, but
strictly from a stability perspective Windows 10 is amazing and
while my 2014 version of Sage 50 does sometimes go down the drain,
Jaws, Excel and Outlook crashes are extremely
rare.

I guess everybody$B!G(Bs system is different, I do have a
high-end laptop at home, but at work all 4 PC$B!G(Bs we use there
are mini PC$B!G(Bs, two of them Intel NUC with an I3 and an I5
processor, the other two are HP EliteDesk 800 mini PC$B!G(Bs, one
has
an I5 and one has an I7 processor. All of them except for the
I3 system run very well, the I3 system which has 12 Gb of RAM is a
bit sluggish even though it does have an Intel SSD, I certainly
would never buy an I3 again..

Hi William,

Once you've inserted your pivot-table, you need to press f6 to go to the tools pane.

You'll first find there a list of buttons that are your column headings. Htting space bar on one of them brings you a menu from where you can define whether they are values, lines or columns.

To go back to your actual pivot table, press shit+f6.

That's the basics. then you may learn all vocabulary and options related to pivot table.

Hope that help you to get started.
