The context menu came up exactly as you described!! I changed it so that Jaws isn't running from the system tray.

Sorry if any of this has already been mentioned, I'm chiming in a lot late. Hopefully you chose laptop keyboard when Jaws was installed. If so, you should be able to use the caps lock in place of the insert key. Just choose caps lock and J together. I've never seen a laptop without at least the 4 arrow keys. Arrow up to about and enter. One other idea that I use is a bluetooth keyboard. The receiver plugs into a USB port and I have a full keyboard. Of course I have very large hands so typing on a laptop doesn't work well for me.

Do you have the 6 pack of keys somewhere on your keyboard with a second Insert key? If so what happens if you press this Insert key + J? If nothing happens, there's a setting in the Settings Center default all applications that needs to be turned on to use the second Insert key as a Jaws key. Hi, Madison. Do you have the following item checked in your JAWS settings,
1. Open JAWS settings, JAWS key plus six on the numbers row. 2. Select the Default JAWS configuration file with CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D. 3. In the search window, type the words extended insert 4. Look for an option like, Use Extended Insert not checked.‑ 5. If Use Extended Insert is unchecked, check it. 6. TAB to OK, and press ENTER.
Maybe this will fix your INSERT key.

Hi Bill,
Have you ever tried using some of version control (like git or SVN) to manage your JAWS settings? Once it was set up it might make it easier to revert changes that have been made to settings (if I'm right in my assumption that JAWS settings files are all plain text).

A good way to get JAWS version information displayed inn a convenient little window is to go to the JAWS menu with jaws key + j, and hit up arrow once (probably, this might be version dependent I suppose, but it's usuallya t the bottom) to "about". Hit enter and you'll get what you need. As for outlook, I am not sure quite what it is that you want. You want to know your outlook version number and then paste it to someone? If you are getting that info with tge command JAWS commands to display the version information of an executable, this isn't displayed on screen so you can't copy and paste it as though it was a line of text placed in an edit field. It isn't. But if you wanted you could use speech history to retrieve it. Press insert space, then h, then up arrow til you find the text that you need, then copy and paste, and press escape. There are usually more efficient ways to get version info. I seem to remember outlook having an 'about" screen somewhere, too, but at the moment I can't find it. Also, when I do the keystroke to get the Outlook version I copy and paste it, but it doesn't show up in the message, but as attachments, none of which are the actual version info they just seem to be recent messages, what am I doing wrong? To avoid confusion, it might be best to just refer to it as the JAWS key -- it's the capslock key; it doesn't replace the insert key or turn into a new insert key.

Hi,
I just press Insert+j. Another thing you can try is this: while on the desktop, press j until you get to your desired JAWS version, then press enter, pretending you want to start JAWS again. Instead of starting JAWS, either the context menu or the main window will come up. If the context menu comes up, press cursor up twice to get to the "About..." option within the menu, then press enter. Generally, you can use insert+1 to get into keyboard help mode in JAWS, and Insert+1 again to leave it. With that in mind, Madison, what happens if you press Insert+1, then press insert+j while in keyboard help mode? Use speech history to copy what it says by pressing JAWSKey+Space, followed by h. That will open up a speech history window you can navigate through and copy from using control+a, then Control+c to copy its contents. Also, it would be very helpful if we knew the exact brand and name of the laptop in question. Maybe you have some weird keyboard functions activated or some sort of multi media key conficuration. Regards, Nermin

Do you have the 6 pack of keys somewhere on
your keyboard with a second Insert key? If so what happens if you press
this Insert key + J? If nothing happens, there's a setting in the
Settings Center default all applications
that needs to be turned on to use the second Insert key as a Jaws key.
It's under the Keyboard heading / Jaws Insert key.
Stay safe and take care. Mike.

So, how do you get to the Jaws menu, in the laptop keyboard layout?

I have my keyboard layout set to laptop, as that's the only way I have an insert key.

Well, there you go. They always say one should become familiar with the laptop layout even if not using a laptop or not using that layout on a regular basis and, this is part of the reason why.

Hi Bill, Have you ever tried using some of version control (like git or SVN) to manage your JAWS settings? Once it was set up it might make it easier to revert changes that have been made to settings (if I'm right in my assumption that JAWS settings files are all plain text).
