You can scan using JAWS in the newer versions but it sure is not up to snuff to equal Openbook. It will scan a document but you couldn't ever do with it what students and working people need. Vispero give as an excuse not to update OpenBook that they would rather continue to develop JAWS scanning abilities rather than updating OpenBook. They haven't updated it in years and, where does that leave those of us who purchased it a high price.

That is the difference between a stand-alone $1000 piece of software and a free built-in utility.

I suppose, if you don’t mind extra stuff, you could take a screen shot after you do the Jaws scan.

  After scanning with JAWS OCR select the text in the JAWS viewer, copy and paste to a document.  Possible workaround.

Hi before I updated my deleted messages in my deleted folder in thunderbird.

Now since I have updated to windows 2004 the latest update of that my Jaws doesn't tell my the number of deleted messages in thunderbird.

When I ma on that folder in thunderbird.

So how can I correct this?

I am running the latest update for windows 10 2004 and the latest version of Jaws 2020.

Once you’ve created a desktop shortcut to a specific version of JAWS, try renaming it. for example, I’ve renamed JAWS 2020 as “JAWS 2020 shortcut.” This method was recommended by an FS tech support guy, and it has worked for me for several versions. Don’t ask me why.

To rename a file, place focus on the filename, then press F2 to bring up an edit field. Make the changes, then press enter.

Apparently, some systems, mine included, and I'm running Windows 10 Home 64 bit; Jaws 2020 blocks the desktop hotkeys.

I worked with Eric Damery last fall after Jaws 2020 came out.

They thought the November or maybe the December update had fixed it, but they stopped working.

They work with other screen readers.

The interesting thing is that the issue doesn’t show up on all laptops  using the Realtek  drivers.  I have a HP laptop and it is running windows 10 1909 haven’t pulled down or had the latest version pushed to me yet, but I’ve never had this sound problem.

 

But if you want to read on I’ll tell you about an issue I had with my laptop when I upgraded to windows 10 18.03 version.  It’s a weird story and the solution was insane. But it fixed my issues.  I actually worked with Freedom Scientific, and it was the accessibility folks at Microsoft the tier 3 folks who solved it.

 

My laptop is a fully loaded system 20 gb of ram 5.1 surround sound with a touch screen. 

 

Yes, I know I didn’t need some of these features like the h HG screen but the system came with dual AC wireless and I loved the keyboard action.  I’m a little picky when it comes to the keyboard and so tested out lots of systems before purchasing one.

 

Anyways, my system worked fine with windows 10 17.09.  however, after upgrading to the 18.03 release I discovered a very annoying bug.

 

The keyboard echo worked fine as long as I was working on the desktop or in a ms office product.  When you typed the characters would be spoken correctly.  Or words for that matter. 

 

However, when one launched an internet browser to go to the web suddenly the keyboard echo was insane.  When you hit a character it did not report the character properly.  E.g. hit the letter w and it might say r

 

The interesting thing was if you went back and reviewed what you had typed the characters were reported as expected.

 

I thought maybe it was a keyboard driver.  It wasn’t. Microsoft the first folks checked that.  no the driver was upto date.  We then checked the sound drivers they were up to date.

 

Note: this browser issue happened with narrator as well.

 

So the tier I folks ended up passing me to the tier 2 folks.  They checked things out as well. No good.  So they passed me back to the tier 3 folks.

 

So had to set up a time for the tier 3 folks to call me.  When they did we set up a remote session so they could come on to my laptop.  And with in 5 minutes the issue was fixed.

 

Hold it wait!!!!

 

I bet none of you will guess what the solution was.  I still shake my head when thinking about it.  But the solution just goes to show you how interrelated the windows code is.

 

The solution was to lock my screen into land scape mode.  As soon as we did this, everything worked fine.  In any web browser when a person hit the letter w it said w. etc.

 

So that’s my weird solution and story about windows10.

That’s very common especially with Dell laptops, but basically anything with a Realtek driver. My solution was a registry tweak. Not sure if it will survive a driver update, but I haven’t had the problem since I changed the required entries, so I’m good.

Yes, what is happening is to save power some sound card drivers are putting the card into a sleep or shutdown mode and so when Jaws goes to send info to the sound card it has to wake up.  This isn’t happening to everyone.  The solution was a small program was written that continually sends something to the card to keep it active. And that way it didn’t have to wake up.

 

In the June release of Jaws they are going to build this feature of keeping the card awake as an option that a person can turn on if they are experiencing the issue.

Windows 10 2004 is Available; Narrator Gets Improved Web and Outlook Support, Even Firefox Compatibility

Windows 10 version 2004, the first major update for Windows this decade, is here, and while the updates are smaller, there are a variety of new features and bug fixes included.
Let's start with kaomoji, which is apparently a word meaning Japanese emoji. Actually, this isn't anything I've ever used, so let's move on for now to more useful stuff.

Dictation support has been added for additional languages, including English variants for the UK and Australia. If you haven't tried dictation before, it works rather well out of the box, and can be toggled with the hotkey Windows+H. You will hear two ascending tones to start dictation, and two descending tones when finished. In NVDA, text, is read aloud as you dictate, so this naturally works best using headphones.

Various settings screens, including network settings, have gained a revamp. Much of this is visual, but it may provide some additional data that will be useful. If you use virtual desktops, the feature which allows you to have more than one desktop to separate your apps, you can now rename these instead of just having Desktop 1, Desktop 2, etc. If you haven't tried this feature, Tangela is looking at doing a post soon, so stay tuned.

There's even some updates to Notepad, yes Notepad, including a keyboard shortcut for Save As (Ctrl+Shift+S), and to close a window (Ctrl+W).

Specifically for accessibility, there are a variety of changes included in Narrator and magnifier. For one, web page reading has been improved with a variety of tweaks, a new shortcut to read a summary of a page (Narrator+S), and even surprise support for Mozilla Firefox. This post from the Windows Experience Blog expounds further on many of these changes, including several Magnifier improvements.

You can get the update now by checking for updates in Settings, or if you are impatient, grab the free Windows 10 Update Assistant to get it now. If you had an older version of the Update Assistant on your computer, you may need to download this tool again to get the latest version. While most bugs should be squashed by now, there are some scattered reports of some trouble, especially with Lenovo Thinkpad users, so you may not want to rush into this one unless you are dying to get one of these features.

Accessibility Improvements (Build 18945)

Narrator now provides a more efficient reading experience when reading messages in Outlook or Windows Mail

When the message is opened, Scan Mode will turn on automatically. This allows the user to use their arrow keys to read the message in addition to all other Scan Mode hotkeys to jump through the text of the message.

Email messages like newsletters and marketing content are often formatted using tables to visually represent the look of the message. For a screen reader user, this information is not needed while reading the message. Narrator now recognizes some of these situations and will remove the information about the table to allow you to quickly move through the text contained in the message. This lets you to be much more efficient while reading these types of email messages.

Narrator s Outlook folder reading has been enhanced for an optimal triaging experience

As you read through your emails in Outlook, such as the inbox, Narrator now reads the information more efficiently. Each line item now starts with the status of the email, such as unread, forwarded, etc., followed by the other columns, such as from, subject, etc. Column headers will be silenced and columns with no data or that have the default (expected value) will be silenced, such as normal importance or unflagged, etc. While in Outlook, headers can be turned back on by pressing Narrator + H which will toggle their reading on and off.

Text cursor indicator

Have you ever had an issue finding the text cursor in the middle of a large amount of text, during a presentation, or on the screen in an educational setting? The new Text cursor indicator will help you see and find the text cursor wherever you are at any time! Select from a range of sizes for the text cursor indicator and make it a color easy for you to see. Or, personalize the color of your text cursor indicator to your personal preference. In the Ease of Access settings, open the new Text cursor page, turn on the text cursor indicator, and never lose track of your text cursor ever again!

Other Accessibility Improvements (Build 18932)

Narrator will now automatically start reading webpages and emails: Do you want to hear the most valuable content faster? Narrator now automatically starts reading webpages when they are loaded. Narrator will start reading at the main landmark, if there is one, or will fall back to a reasonable paragraph. Narrator will also start automatically reading emails when they are opened in Outlook and the inbox Mail applications. If you find experiences that aren   t working well, please send us feedback.

The Magnifier UI now works with dark theme and text sizing options. The image below shows two Magnifier windows. The top one is in Light theme and default text size; the bottom one is in Dark theme and the text is scaled at 125%.

Accessibility improvements (Build 18894)

Table reading improvements: Narrator is now more efficient when reading tables. Header information is not repeated when navigating within the same row or column. Entering and exiting tables is also less verbose.

Narrator web page summary: There   s a new command in Narrator to give a webpage summary! (Narrator + S). Currently this command will give information about hyperlinks, landmarks and headings.

Magnifier text cursor setting: Windows Magnifier has a new ability to keep the text cursor in the center of the screen making it easier and smoother to type. Centered on the screen is on by default and can be changed in the Magnifier settings.

Improved Windows Sandbox accessibility (Build 18855)

We have made several updates to improve Windows Sandbox accessibility scenarios. This includes:

Microphone support

Added functionality to configure the audio input device via the Windows Sandbox config file

A Shift + Alt + PrintScreen key sequence in Windows Sandbox which activates the ease of access dialog for enabling high contrast mode.

A ctrl + alt + break key sequence in Windows Sandbox which allows entering/exiting fullscreen mode

This has been a problem for me for years with a Titanium SoundBlaster card, though it doesn’t cut off words, it just causes occasional crackling or distortion.  I have been using the  Silenzio app  for some time to stop this problem. Glad to see it incorporated in JAWS.

Yes Mike, that is what I had to do.

It works great and since I don’t use more than 10 shortcuts really it is enough.

Anything else I can just run from the search box after tapping the windows key.  Or, of course, go to the desktop and use first letter navigation.

Its just bloody strange that Freedom Scientific nor Microsoft have an explanation for why on some systems the standard desktop shortcuts don’t work and yet on other, seemingly very similar setups they do.

Got to love those gremlins.

Pinning the shortcut icons to the task bar never fails for me, but the drawback is that you're limited to how many you can pin to the taskbar.  These shortcuts can be accessed from anywhere on the computer.

Once you’ve created a desktop shortcut to a specific version of JAWS, try renaming it. for example, I’ve renamed JAWS 2020 as “JAWS 2020 shortcut.” This method was recommended by an FS tech support guy, and it has worked for me for several versions. Don’t ask me why.

To rename a file, place focus on the filename, then press F2 to bring up an edit field. Make the changes, then press enter.

Apparently, some systems, mine included, and I'm running Windows 10 Home 64 bit; Jaws 2020 blocks the desktop hotkeys.

I worked with Eric Damery last fall after Jaws 2020 came out.

They thought the November or maybe the December update had fixed it, but they stopped working.

They work with other screen readers.

I Have tried it on two Dell laptops so this would explain things.

I Guess that if it is kept awake always, it wil decrease the battery life, that would explain that logic.

That’s very common especially with Dell laptops, but basically anything with a Realtek driver. My solution was a registry tweak. Not sure if it will survive a driver update, but I haven’t had the problem since I changed the required entries, so I’m good.

Yes, what is happening is to save power some sound card drivers are putting the card into a sleep or shutdown mode and so when Jaws goes to send info to the sound card it has to wake up.  This isn’t happening to everyone.  The solution was a small program was written that continually sends something to the card to keep it active. And that way it didn’t have to wake up.

 

In the June release of Jaws they are going to build this feature of keeping the card awake as an option that a person can turn on if they are experiencing the issue.

Frankly, I haven't noticed any difference in the versions.  I assume it mainly shows up in the recovery environment, or maybe in the Linux versions.  The windows component seems to work the same either way, and since I have multiple computers, I've been able to fix all my problems without having to use the recovery environment with speech.

1.      Hit Windows to open the search box and type in startup, and hit enter. Make it one word with no spaces.

2.      Tab through and hit the spacebar to toggle the various apps listed on and off.

3.      Hit Alt  F4 when you are done. There is no OK button.

Just learned about being able to scan a document with JAWS layered keystroke (jaws key and spacebar, then o, then a)

This is great to simply read some text and to save text. However, I see no way to scan and save as an image (i.e. jpg) This is an option in open book. Thoughts?
