Hi, Robin. When JAWS is set to mute speech, speech is always muted. When JAWS is set to use Speech on demand, speech is usually muted, but JAWS will still speek when using commands such as,

Say Character

Say Prior Word

Say Next Word

Say Word

Spell Word

Say Prior Line

Say Current Line

Spell Current Line

Say All

etc. So, you have speech muted, but when using navigational commands except for arrow keys, JAWS will speak normally.

Sieghard, Are you able to articulate to me what Speech on Demand really does?  Even without following the steps you and Bill each outlined,  I was finding that the JAWS spacebar then S would mute my speech.  JAWS says Speech on Demand, but when this is active, I havent’ noticed JAWS speaking so it’s effectively been a mute function for me.  I’m not clear how someone would use Speech on Demand and am guessing that you have to customize how JAWS will or won’t speak in this mode, but can’t imagine how it’s used.

Just for your information, you can accomplish what  you described also in the following way:

1. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S – this will turn on speech on demand

2. Now press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S – Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech mute”

3. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S again – Jaws will now say full speech and from now on when you press this layered shortcut it will toggle between mute and full speech.

If you want to go back to speech on demand simply repeat the above steps, first toggle speech to mute, then press the layered keystroke but with Shift + S and Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech on demand”, now the toggle is back between full speech and speech on demand.

2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D to load Default JAWS configuration.

3. In the search field, type

speech.

4. Arrow down to Less Speech Options.

5. Press SPACE BAR to toggle speech from Speech On Demand to Mute Speech.

6. TAB to OK, and press ENTER to save settings.

7. Now, INSERT plus SPACE, followed by S will mute speech instead of setting it to Speech On Demand.

Well, maybe the issue is more complex than that? I only suggest this because I have been using and mostly loving Windows 10 for over two years now, and don’t really experience any of the problems with the JAWS cursor most of you are describing. Mostly still works great/as well as  ever on this system, though I admit I hardly use any of the new “universal style apps” at all, where this cursor mostly is useless anyway. It used to give me nothing from Firefox, but turning hardware acceleration off (I think – was a long time ago that I had to tweak this setting) fixed that.

And if you use Jaws 2019 you can now specify in Options > Basic if you want to get the prompt whether you really want to exit Jaws. If you don’t want it then pressing Jaws Key + F4 simply unloads Jaws and that is that.

You can make a keyboard shortcut to reload Jaws, go to the Jaws icon on the desktop and press Alt + Enter for the properties:

1. Tab twice and you hear “Shortcut key: Hot key, None

2. Press a key combination you want to use, I recommend Control + Shift + J since it’s easy to press and easy to remember

3. Tab to OK and activate it. You maybe be prompted to continue with administrator rights, but once done if Jaws is unloaded pressing Control + Shift + J will start it.

Can this also be toggled to turn back on?

The problem is not only Firefox. However, Crome is not my favorite simply because so different, as I see it, from Internet Explorer and/or Firefox. Creature of habit I am guilty of being.

Another notice… when I am receiving email, jaws will practically freeze up or at best, severely lag. What is this now about? All my problems are since Jaws 2019 was installed and with the Office headaches, in the last week since upgrading from Office 2010 to 2019.

Based on what Richard said this sounds more like it’s how Firefox renders the page since it is not spoken in Edge or Chrome. Chrome in my opinion is by far the best browser option right now, it is extremely accessible and very fast.

Just out of curiosity, what is it you dislike about Chrome?

Also, if you want to know exactly what Jaws is saying, let it speak a line where this word is spoken and then go into Jaws speech history with Jaws Key + Spacebar and H and you can then review the text in the virtual cursor.

Which version of Jaws do you use, don’t think you mentioned it.

Also a problem with IE but everything is a problem with that browser. I dislike Edge and Crome so not a concern. I’ll notify the Jaws folks to have them look into this when I find the time…

I can confirm it is likely a Firefox issue since Edge doesn’t say the word “all” before those items either.

But, since I use Firefox I went and checked and yes it does say all.

But, I use DuckDuckGo as my home page, so I never deal with that as I am not a fan of google.

This sounds like not an issue with Jaws but an issue with the website. I have come across many websites where some word or string of characters is spoken which visually is not there, but it is somehow part of the websites code and Jaws picks it up. Have you tried a different browser like Chrome?

Having said this, I just went to Google.com and clicked on this item “How search works” and I don’t hear Jaws saying anything extra, here is a portion of that site from Jaws speech history, I use Chrome as my browser and I use Jaws 2019:
