You could try Visual Studio Code, which apparently supports Markdown.
I tend to edit Markdown files in Emacs though.

How to get to a YouTube Skip Ads popup?
Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,
Recently I’ve been having trouble with finding the Skip Ads button in YouTube. Today, several minutes into an 18 minute ad and being unable to find the Skip Ads button, I cornered a sighted coworker who easily found what they described as a Skip Ads popup button that was over the Play button area. This never announced as I tabbed and arrowed through the YouTube screen.
Is there a way or ways to consistently find YouTube Skip Ads buttons?
Thanks in advance, Keith

Markdown Editor That Works With JAWS
ben <swigjr23@...>
Hello list,
I am looking for a Markdown editor that works with JAWS. I am currently using Jarte to write Markdown and Pandoc to convert it. I have tried a couple of the Markdown editors for Windows, but the ones i have tried don't seem to work well with JAWS. Does anyone know of an accessible option other than Jarte or Notepad? Do this:
1. Press Jaws Key + J for the Jaws menu then H for Help and J for Jaws help Topics (of course you can also arrow to Help, right arrow to expand, arrow to Jaws help Topics and right arrow to expand) 2. Arrow down to Settings Center Book, closed and right arrow to expand it 3. Arrow to Speech on Demand Book, closed and right arrow to expand it 4. Arrow down to “topic Speech on Demand”, press enter to select it and then press F6 to jump to the content panel where you find all the information.

Also never forget that all of this is covered in detail in Help > Jaws Help Topics. In this case here is what is said about speech on demand:
Speech On DemandSpeech On Demand is a feature that allows you to limit the amount of JAWS speech you hear as you navigate windows and documents or perform other actions using hot keys. By default, when using Speech On Demand, JAWS only announces actions that are associated with a limited set of hot keys. In addition, mouse echo and typing echo are still available, which allows JAWS to read text that you point to with the mouse pointer and speak characters and words as you type. You can quickly toggle between Speech On Demand and full speech using a convenient layered command, or even make Speech On Demand the default speech mode when JAWS starts. For JAWS users who rely heavily on Braille or for users of Fusion that can see well enough to use the screen for tracking focus, too much speech can be overwhelming while navigating using the keyboard and mouse. However, users still want to be able to use speech to read once they have moved to a location on the screen, or just checking a Window Title, column heading in a table or spread sheet, or even reading the time from the System tray. In both these situations, Speech On Demand can be very helpful. You will find that switching applications with ALT+TAB or using ARROW keys to move through a document are silenced. Speech is only triggered when using a limited set of reading commands such as speaking the current character, word, line, paragraph, or doing a Say All. You also have the option to completely turn off speech. Layered commands to toggle Speech On Demand or Mute Speech:
By default, JAWS always returns to Full Speech when restarted after these keystrokes have been used. To make permanent changes to the default settings, do the following:
Note: When set to Speech On Demand or Mute Speech, all sounds played by JAWS are also muted. This includes the sound heard when pressing INSERT+SPACEBAR to enter Layered Keys mode as well as the sound heard when completing an address in Outlook. Re: Excel rows and columns
Sieghard,
Please send the sample spreadsheet to me via e-mail, as attachments get stripped (or at least they do on the web interface) by this Groups.io group. I'll take a look and download JAWS so I have it in 40 minute mode. Also let me know whether it's column headings, row titles, or both that you're looking to have spoken as you traverse the table. I do know that when I was last working with Excel and JAWS it will only read the column title once, when you land in that column, if you stay within it (move up/down) and the same was true of the row title (move left/right). -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. How can I set this up in a workbook which has let’s say 31 sheets, one for each day of the month. Each sheet is set up identically and I would like to se this up on the first sheet and have it so Jaws reads row and column titles on each subsequent sheet. This can be a very useful option for braille users who want some speech but don’t necessarily want Jaws to speak everything and it was really designed with braille users in mind. It is not a useful option for a completely blind person who relies on speech only.

Hi, Robin. When JAWS is set to mute speech, speech is always muted. When JAWS is set to use Speech on demand, speech is usually muted, but JAWS will still speek when using commands such as,
Say Character Say Prior Word Say Next Word Say Word Spell Word Say Prior Line Say Current Line Spell Current Line Say All
etc. So, you have speech muted, but when using navigational commands except for arrow keys, JAWS will speak normally.

Sieghard, Are you able to articulate to me what Speech on Demand really does? Even without following the steps you and Bill each outlined, I was finding that the JAWS spacebar then S would mute my speech. JAWS says Speech on Demand, but when this is active, I havent’ noticed JAWS speaking so it’s effectively been a mute function for me. I’m not clear how someone would use Speech on Demand and am guessing that you have to customize how JAWS will or won’t speak in this mode, but can’t imagine how it’s used.

Hi Bill,
Just for your information, you can accomplish what you described also in the following way:
1. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S – this will turn on speech on demand 2. Now press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S – Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech mute” 3. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S again – Jaws will now say full speech and from now on when you press this layered shortcut it will toggle between mute and full speech. If you want to go back to speech on demand simply repeat the above steps, first toggle speech to mute, then press the layered keystroke but with Shift + S and Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech on demand”, now the toggle is back between full speech and speech on demand.

1. Open Settings Center with INSERT plus six on numbers row. 2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D to load Default JAWS configuration. 3. In the search field, type
speech.
4. Arrow down to Less Speech Options. 5. Press SPACE BAR to toggle speech from Speech On Demand to Mute Speech. 6. TAB to OK, and press ENTER to save settings.
7. Now, INSERT plus SPACE, followed by S will mute speech instead of setting it to Speech On Demand.

Re: Excel rows and columns
From a tutorial I put together for a former student. There is another way to do this via JAWS such that it "doesn't stick," but my client always wanted JAWS to read column headers (and, sometimes, row titles) every time he needed to touch a given spreadsheet, so this is how to set things up in the spreadsheet itself such that JAWS will read these any time it's opened:
You will receive many files where the column title row has not been defined such that JAWS can read it. Once you figure out which row contains the column titles, do the following: 1. INS+V, Bring up JAWS Verbosity Settings 2. Type column, in the Verbosity Search Box 3. Arrow down to Column Titles Row Range Set 4. Hit Spacebar, this should cause JAWS to announce the row number you were sitting on that contains the column titles. (If this is on the first row JAWS will say one but if it’s the fifth row it will say five.) If you also want JAWS to announce the rows by the data that you have in the first column, you will want to continue as follows: 1. Hit Down Arrow to move to the Row Titles for Column Range Set 2. Hit spacebar and JAWS will announce the column letter that contains the data that will be used to announce the row title. So you will hear A if it’s column A, B if column B, etc. --Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. Re: Jaws Cursor İssue
The Iowa Gal <iowagal728@...>
Hi tom, I agree with you regarding the Jaws cursor. At least in XP I was able to find some things with it, but as Jaws has progressed, or regressed, as the case may be, there is less and less functionality. I’m not sure why I even try to use it any more, as I get the blankety-blanke blanks 98% of the time. This has forced me to try the touch cursor more often, though I’m underwhelmed with it so far. Guess I just need to spend more time with it. Really liked your definition of the John’s curser. Very clever. Best, Norma

As for the John’s cursor, I’ve never actually encountered one of those but I would speculate that it must be some device that kicks into high gear when a guy hanging out in the red-light district gets busted and hauled in for soliciting.
