One other thought. I would mention to the author of the web site they should follow ARIA: Accessible Rich Internet Applications  and look at w3.org which Provides  information on making sites accessible to the visually impaired as well as other disabilities. The url has information about ARIA and other ways to help make their site accessible. You could even mention that there are about 19 million people in this country with a disability. Not a small market.

I finally took a look at the html on the site. One of the things a developer should do is test their web site on more than one browser. Plus they should have individuals with different disabilities test the site. They probably didn’t think of how a screen reader picks up on text or graphics. The site is using what I think is an attribute I never saw before. I think the internet explorer recognize it and the other browsers do not. I would suggest to them to use the alt attribute. The code uses the alt attribute in other locations. Yet it sets the alt attribute associated value to blank. A screen reader needs the alt attribute to have text.

For example:

Alt=”Facebook”

I hop;e this helps.

Link

On separate lines in the browse buffer.

You see this too on the Wordpress Dashboard, if you go into any option like Updates, then look for the dashboard link, it is not spoken.

I’ve tried with NVDA too and get the same issue. I’m hoping to reach out to the developer/author of the word press theme and see if they can make any adjustments so Jaws will read  out what these four links actually are  , rather than just saying link, but I wanted  to go back to him with a solution as to how to possibly fix the link, so does anyone know the technical reason links wouldn’t read their names in chrome and Firefox but yet would work fine in internet explorer?

why do you need to use, jaws/insert key+alt+f4,
you should be able to use insert+f4 to unload jaws.
this is true whether you use a wireless or not.

My friend has recently purchased a laptop equipped with Windows10.
Since he is not that tech savvy, he wanted me to install his prefered
apps and do all the necessary settings according to his liking. I
installed JAWS and NVDA successfully; however, I was unable to perform
the Insert+F4 command to quit JAWS by any means, even when setting
keyboard layout to laptop. As I hit Caps lock+F4, JAWS speaks
"Windows+P" and opens a projection listbox with 4 options like,
"Computer only," "Extend" etc. I tried the same via an external USB
keyboard, but to no avail. Besides, Application key for bringing up a
context menu is non-functional, I can easily launch the same with
Shift+F10 though. Now, it really makes me wonder why such a strange is
happening. Your tips and tricks will be highly appreciated.

JAWS Freezes When Hyperlinking in Word

Rahul Bajaj

Hi,

I use JAWS 2018. I have Word 10 as well as 16. JAWS simply freezes
whenever I press control+k and start hyperlinking. In word 16, it
still manages to remain afloat and you can turn it back on, but in
2010, it simply stops working completely.

NVDA does slightly better, but it freezes a bit as well. Any ideas?

Best,

Are you not running Jaws from the system tray? If doing an insert/jaws key plus J doesn't put you in to the Jaws options, that is telling you that all you need to do is put Jaws in to the system tray. Then, insert/Jaws F4 will work the way you want it to.

If you can alt tab to the Jaws options menu, then go in to basics and tab to run Jaws in the system tray and check that check box.

Good luck,

A wireless keyboard won't solve the issue if your laptop uses the function keys as media keys. If that is the case by default then the function keys on the wireless keyboard will mimic this behaviour.

Re: Unable to quit JAWS using Insert+F4

If this is the case I wonder why "Run from system tray" is not checked by default if you install Jaws on a new system.
It is always one of the first things I do either manually or in the setup wizard since I hate having Jaws in the taskbar.

Good luck,

Hi all,

I hope this Email finds you all in good spirit.

Re: links not being read in chrome, but being read fine in IE

Kevin Meyers <kevinmeyers@...>

I finally took a look at the html on the site. One of the things a developer should do is test their web site on more than one browser. Plus they should have individuals with different disabilities test the site. They probably didn’t think of how a screen reader picks up on text or graphics. The site is using what I think is an attribute I never saw before. I think the internet explorer recognize it and the other browsers do not. I would suggest to them to use the alt attribute. The code uses the alt attribute in other locations. Yet it sets the alt attribute associated value to blank. A screen reader needs the alt attribute to have text.

For example:

Alt=”Facebook”

I hop;e this helps.

Hi Paul,

Sometimes I find in Chrome, it will say the word Link, then underneath will be the name of the link when you down arrow.  Is it doing that?  Like this:-

Link

Favourites

Link

Whatever

On separate lines in the browse buffer.

You see this too on the Wordpress Dashboard, if you go into any option like Updates, then look for the dashboard link, it is not spoken.

I believe this to be a Chrome problem.

All the best

Hi  everyone,

I’m building a word press site. The theme I’m using seems nice and accessible and is working well with screen readers, but I’ve come across 4 links which aren’t being read out by  jaws in chrome and Firefox and jaws just says link, but yet if I use IE the links are read out fine by Jaws  and will for example say ‘link favorites’.

Many thanks in advance for any help

Paul

Not sure if the function keys acting as media keys is the problem since the original poster said Shift + F10 works to bring up the context menu. If the function keys didn't work, then it should be necessary to also press FN + Shift + f10. Anyhow, it's easy to try this, just press FN + Jaws Key + F4 and see if that works, if it does then the issue is definitely in the function keys.

Re: zipping files

JM Casey

There can be some advantages to using a third-party programme, even though Windows now natively supports compressed archives in the zip format at least.

Some of the third party programmes provide more context menu/shell options. These can tell the programme how to extract the files and where to place them, etc, without having to actually use that programme’s interface.

Winrar, and, I guess, 7zip too, offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to archiving. You can compress as much or as little as you want (or at least as much as the compression algorithms allows). I don’t know what Windows uses by default, but just for Zip archives, I am offered four different levels, from greatest to least compression. You can also set passwords for the archive, which is not something that Windows allows, or if it does, it’s not immediately apparent.

You can try Seven Zip instead. Enable context menus and you can right click the folder and zip it. Or highlight all the files and right click them also..

Re: Unable to quit JAWS using Insert+F4

Not sure if the function keys acting as media keys is the problem since the original poster said Shift + F10 works to bring up the context menu. If the function keys didn't work, then it should be necessary to also press FN + Shift + f10. Anyhow, it's easy to try this, just press FN + Jaws Key + F4 and see if that works, if it does then the issue is definitely in the function keys.

The problem is that the laptop has function keys set to be media keys by default. So, you need to press the FN key with the JAWS key and F4. I do this on my personal laptop.

Hi all,

I hope this Email finds you all in good spirit.

Hi,
This is a jaws issue and has been for quite a while.
Hit alt, shift, windows, capslock all at once and that should clear things
up for quite a while.

hitting the left and right Alt keys repeateadly back and forth and
surprisingly, that cleared it. I then did it with the control key and,
again, it seemed to clear the issue. ItCertainly is an odd issue.

Creating a signature in Outlook 2010/2013/2016

1. Alt+f=file menu.
2. T=options.
3. Down-Arrow once to mail, or press m=mail.
4. Tab several times until you get to the word signature, or, pres alt+n.
5. Press you're spacebar or, enter key.
6. Tab a few times.
7. "you will hear/see "new signature alt+n".
8 Press enter or spacebar.
9. Press enter.
10. Type a name for your signature. Example; the account/email address,
11. Press tab then spacebar or, enter on the okay button.
12. Now you are placed on the signature page. As you tab/navigate read
your choices for font.
13. When you arrive within the edit box here you can type in your signature,
then tab and press the okay button.
14. You're now given a screen of various choices. Tab through to decide
whether you wish to check or uncheck any of these boxes. Once you tab to
the okay button and press enter, you are placed back into the inbox and have
created you're signature.

Hello,
I am using JAWS 2019 on a Windows 10 machine and I am trying to edit

Thank you in advance for any responses
