Compatibility might not be guaranteed but it has long been a major
concern at MS. Think of how 16-bit programs worked up until the switch
to 64-bit windows, and even then they supported a transition for
awhile with XP mode. And 16-bit programs are far less prevalent than
IE.

Even now IE is an optional feature that has to be enabled by the user
but the MSHTML renderer is not, and it is the renderer where most of
the security issues reside.

Take your windows cd, or download one from Microsoft. Then insert the
cd, while still in windows and reinstall windows keeping all your
personal files. This resets a lot of stuff which may have gotten
corrupted. I have had to do this a few times.

Removing IE would break an incredible amount of compatibility, which
for MS is a huge no-no. For example, my family owns a small retail
store with some security cameras installed. The remote access software
for the DVR is served up as an ActiveX control embedded in a web page.
This pretty much means that IE is the only browser capable of
displaying the feeds. Removing IE would thus completely break our
ability to view the cameras from remote locations.

Even worse than removing IE would be removing the mshtml renderer (IE
is basically just a UI wrappr around the mshtml renderer). The edge
renderer can be embedded in .net projects but not code that targets
the native windows programming layer. That is not true of mshtml.

And unfortunately that degree of versatility is both why IE was so
incredibly successful at the time and why it is impossible to fix the
security issues.

           I agree.   I frequently forget that users of assistive technology have the option of availing themselves of Microsoft technical support free of charge, and if you can, why not?  There is the occasional bad tech, true, but when that happens just politely terminate the call and try again.  You're not likely to get the same one twice if calling again right after hanging up.  They've already picked up the next call that was on hold.

The easiest way I found to confirm whether the screen shade is on or off is to go into the quick settings menu with, Insert + V, or Capslock + V, if you are using the laptop layout, and in the search field type shade. Next, down arrow once and JAWS should state whether it is checked or not.

Hi Steve,

Have you checked if the "Coming Soon" feature in Outlook is turned off?
When you are in your Inbox press the Alt key to bring up the ribbon menu, you should be on "Home", now left arrow twice, here is Jaws History:

I press the Alt key and here this:
Upper Ribbon, Ribbon, Home Tab, Alt followed by H
I press the left arrow once and here this:
Leaving menus, File Tab Button, Alt followed by F
I press the left arrow a second time and here this:
Ribbon Tabs Tab expanded, Turn on features coming soon Button, Alt followed by U

As you can see Alt followed by U is the shortcut, but that will just toggle it and not tell you if it's on or off.
If it says " Turn on features coming soon" then it is off and your problem is a different one.
But if you hear Turn off features coming soon Button checked" then it is on and you can turn this off by pressing the spacebar.
Note that whether you turn it on or off Jaws will focus on an "OK" button and the message which it seems you can only read with the touch cursor is simply this:

You must restart this application for the changes to take effect.
OK

So go ahead and press OK, then close Outlook completely, wait a few seconds and reopen it, now try to see if you can read those fields with the shortcut keys.
I suggest this should be turned off, if it is on you may get upcoming features which could cause issues like this before Vispero and/or Microsoft has time to make any necessary changes.
I certainly also don't have any issues with Alt + 1, Alt + 2 and so on reading the From, To, CC etc. Fields.

Thanks for that. I'm using the same version, and the message is in focus. I can manually tab and shift tab to the info, but it is not speaking with the alt and numbers. The correct script is loading too.

I am able to read the sender information with alt and number keys without any issues.
Please verify the focus once the message opens.
if the focus is on the message and if you are not able to read the information with the alt and number keys, then, there might some issues with the jaws.

Issues with Groups.io e-mail being blocked (usually considered spam) by e-mail service providers

 

Hello All,

           This is officially off-topic for the group, but as it's vital information and there has been a recent marked uptick in certain e-mail service providers blocking Groups.io messages it is important that the information be shared.   It is really, really important that if your e-mail service provider is blocking Groups.io e-mail messages, or even causing them to bounce, that you get in touch with them and scream bloody murder about it.   Until and unless enough customers make it clear that it is unacceptable to block messages from a subscription service such as Groups.io, which by definition cannot be spam, they're going to keep doing it because they have not permanently whitelisted Groups.io.

            Although what follows is specific to Earthlink, as they've recently been blocking, the same principles apply no matter who your e-mail service provider might be.

I suggest initiating both a live chat and a phone call. If enough do that it will get their attention. They need to point out that Groups.io is a reputable and legitimate subscription mailing list service that requires subscribers to verify their intent to subscribe by verifying their email addresses... after which the messages from various interest groups hosted by Groups.io are solicited and are NOT spam. As Shal said, "Groups.io should be whitelisted as a legit email service."

Having worked the abuse desk for a small local ISP quite some years ago, I'm aghast at the careless blocking practices being employed these days... and Gmail isn't the solution.

Users are going to have to take on a more active role in this, particularly in complaining to their providers about blocking known e-mail list services that can send messages to anyone if and only if they have subscribed to get them.

I've been following this thread... if doing so clears up the problem
that was originally described, is there a fix to prevent this from
occurring in the future? my friend is experiencing the same problem. he
ran sfc /scannow in administrator mode but no issues were encountered.
what else can he do?

he is blind, and using Windows 7 and 10 and both computers have this
problem occasionally.

Shutdown followed by power up cycle, to get the computer to reload
Windows 10 from disc from scratch rather than using the system
hibernation file employed by Fast Startup.
