No font

Richard Turner

Anyone out there have a clue why in a program Jaws would report No Font when pressing insert+f?

That works in all other applications.

This is about CSS HTML Validator from www.htmlvalidator.com

The very strangest thing is that this same program works on my computer at work just fine.

Tether JAWS Cursor to PC Cursor

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

What is the JAWS command (laptop keyboard layout, if available) to tether the JAWS cursor (i.e., the mouse) to the PC cursor?  Also, when this is done, is it specific only to the particular application for which it is done, or is it system wide?  Is there a way to make it specific to a particular application; for example by way of a JAWS setting?  Is the action permanent; meaning it will be active if the computer and the particular application is started subsequently?  Or, must it be done every time the computer is restarted?

Thanks,

Richard

It is also possible to change the period of time that popup notifications remain on the screen. They may only stick around for five seconds, which I believe is the default, but this period of time can be lengthened to as much as five minutes before the notification is sent off to the action center.

This adjustment can be found under Settings, Ease of Access, then go to Display. Tab through this dialog and you will find a combo box with the title "show notifications for" and you can then adjust the period of time that they'll stay around.

Sometimes, a notification balloon pops-up telling me about something on my PC.  For a sighted person, they would click on the balloon and would then be taken to the relevant thing.  In JAWS 2018, how can I get to the balloon notification to review it and activate (click on) it?

I'm using JAWS 2019 and Windows 10. It happens on both of my laptops.
So far I realized it in Outlook 365 and in Chrome. It is a sound that
sounds a bit like a piece of paper getting teared or something.

Hi all,
in several apps like Chrome and Outlook there is a sound played as soon
as I type a word that contains a spelling mistake and press space. I
like that but I'd like to adjust it a bit.
I thought I could set it up in the Speech and Sound Schemes but there
are no sounds configured and the learning mode does not give any
information when typing a word containing an error.
So I guess it's not the Speech and Sound Scheme that is responsible for
this functionality.
Do you have any idea where this behavior comes from and if it is
adjustable?

Thanks and best regards
Denis

Hi - can you also use JAWS Key+Alt+W to virtualise the window if it is not already virtualised such as a control or error message. Have found this quite useful as well as the speech history option depending on the situation.

If you want your sighted assistant to be able to either just see what's going on, or to have full control over your machine while working together, Jonas has given you excellent advice:  Quick Assist, which is built-in to Windows 10.    If you hit the Windows Key and start typing just the word Quick then Quick Assist is almost certain to be the first item returned in the search.

I have used this a number of times when providing remote support.  What's interesting is that sometimes I would get the screen reader voice output through my own speakers and other times I wouldn't, not that I needed it.  There is not a voice component to Quick Assist (or if there is I didn't use it), so I always have a simultaneous phone call going on over speakerphone so that both sides of the session can talk to one another as needed.

If both sides needed JAWS, then JAWS Tandem is the way to go.

You can download a zip file of any size for free. It’ll just take longer if it’s a large one, which is why they recommend the hard drive. It’ll let you download a 4 TB zip file, but I wouldn’t want to be the one downloading it.

Re: Jaws 2018 How to do remoted assistance with jaws?

I repeat:   If you hit the Windows Key and start typing just the word Quick then Quick Assist is almost certain to be the first item returned in the search.

If it's not, then just find it in the search results and once you have focus on it hit Enter, this will begin the process of asking for help or offering help.  You, of course, will be asking for assistance and your assistant will be offering assistance.  You will get a 6-digit (I think it's 6-digits) code that you must provide to your assistant and they enter it on their Quick Assist session to establish the connection to your machine.  You will then be prompted telling you that they either want to share your screen or remote control, and you must consent before they get it and can see anything.
