You'd be in the market for a ggaming laptop, which most likely meets your needs. I own a Lenovo thinkpad x1 extreme which can hold 2 solid state drives. Note that a 1 tb solid state drive can now be found for less than $100 - and the speed is so very worth it. So in theory, you could have 2 1 tb drives installed in there. I'm not sure what your budget is - but it's a very solid machine that will last me for years to come. The keyboard is absolutely fantastic, the build quality is top notch and it's very, very serviceable. Thanks

Sometimes, yes, and sometimes not. It appears to be kind of random. I'm thinking it's my configuration somewhere, but I'll have to poke around.

The one that got installed from Windows update. It's an NVidia k2200 card, and when I checked their drivers it seemed to be the same version as what was in Windows update, but I can check for other conflicts. It's probably something obscure. I'll have a look at this, thank you, and see where I get to.

David, have you established for sure it is not Jaws running out of demo time? If you reboot your computer and then start Jaws and work with it for say half an hour, do you run into problems in that first half hour directly after the restart?

I know that sounds weird but hey the windows desktop environment is very complicated and who knows what interactions are taking place have a good day shan I would suggest calling Microsoft access ability desk because it may be some obscure setting is causing you grief because a year ago when I update it to 1803 my jaws would work fine with word excel however when I tried to use Internet explore chrome or Firefox to go on the Internet my keyboard echo would not report what I was typing correctly The solution and it up being liking my video monitor into landscape mode and as soon as I locked it in landscape mode G keyboard echo reported what I was typing correctly That solution came from the Microsoft accessibility helpdesk

Yes', I did not know that, because it's not obvious. I'm just more or less testing before I try to figure out how to pay for it. The subscription model seems helpful, but I'm mostly looking at braille support. Also might get back into programming as well. I'd used JAWS for a bit a few years ago, but the license got dropped when the college stopped paying for it, and I was moving a lot, and so I didn't keep up with it. I'm just trying to work out the best accessibility for all my devices and make sure all the screen readers everywhere will do what people need as much as possible. Do you know if they need extra beta testers?

Perhaps a call to Microsoft Accessibility would be useful. They can log in to your machine and check any crash reports and fix things for you if they find problems or at your request, tell you what to fix. I have had very good success with them. You can call them at 800-936-5900. It is pretty much impossible to speculate as to where the instability could be without knowing everything about your machine, add ins, etc. That would take someone logging into your machine and finding the problem point if they can. No, currently the subscription model Jaws offers in the US is restricted to the US only. Let's hope it will be offered here in Canada very soon since I think it's a great idea and while I will continue to buy SMA's as long as they are offered, for people like David who never had Jaws or for people who are 2 or 3 or even more versions behind the subscription model is great. By the way, David, just in case you didn't know this, the 40 minutes start counting from the first time you turn Jaws on, if you have Jaws set to load on startup and turn it off right away it still counts so if you did this and then turned it on 35 minutes later all you would get before it stops working and you have to reboot is 5 minutes. It sounds like you could be using one of the free screen readers when not using Jaws, which to avoid list administrative ire, I won't mention. But for many things, yes, Jaws is still more powerful. Perhaps you could still write Eric Damery at FS to say that in demo mode of Jaws 2019 your desktop shortcuts don't work. So far, none of their 100 or so beta testers can duplicate it and none of their tech staff can either. edamery@vispero.com Thanks, Richard Check out my web site at: www.turner42.com “The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy has this to say on the subject of flying. I was aware that someone would rip me for saying demo mode, which is why I said maybe commenting on it wasn't worth my time. Back to lurk mode, and sorry for the inconvenience. I was only away from my keyboard for 15 minutes to walk the dog, which shouldn't have crashed my keyboard and braille display to the point I couldn't load another screen reader or do anything else with the system. I am also in Canada and I would hazard a guess and say there is something else going on which causes your problems. I have been a Jaws user since the DOS days (starting in 1989) and since then I have had every single version of Windows except 8.1 and every single version of Jaws on dozens of computers over those 30 years. I have a business and work on my computer and with Jaws every day for 8 to 10 hours and then again I use it at night on my laptop at home. At my retail store I have Jaws on 4 computers and not one exhibits the problems you describe. Does Jaws have issues? Yes, of course it does, but so does every other software program in the world and certainly every screenreader, but I could not have run my store for the last 20 years without it and one thing is for certain, under Windows 10 the Jaws cursor isn't as useful as it used to be under Windows 7, but I go literally days and even weeks without any major Jaws crashes, at least not so I have to resort to rebooting my computer. Good afternoon,
The only way to solve this issue is the following: Uninstall completely jaws and shared components. Uninstall all other fs products installed on your system including all fs voices. Remove all the freedom scientific folders located on your hard drive. Remove all freedom scientific entries from the registry. And reinstall Jaws from scratch and Jaws will work properly on the start menu of all versions of Windows from windows 7 to windows 10. Best regards Cedric

Hi Meesha,
Yes, unfortunately I have the same issue on one of my work PC’s, I can use any application just fine, but Jaws will not speak in the Windows search box, the start menu, the Settings app, control Panel, Calculator and other Windows applications. I an on the Jaws beta team and know a few others have also experienced this, but it seems to be rare and an illusive issue to fix, for me this started over a year ago on this one PC and so far no Windows update, Jaws update, Windows repair or Jaws repair/reinstallation has fixed it. I am convinced that unfortunately the only way to fix this would be to reinstall Windows absolutely fresh and from scratch. I am running the current Beta version of Jaws, but I think the June update already included an alternative way to display the start menu and for me Jaws now reads the start menu on this machine, but still not the Settings app, Windows search box or Calculator. Open Jaws Settings Centre with Jaws Key + 6 on the number row, make sure default settings are loaded by pressing Control + Shift + D, then type “access” in the search box. Tab once and you should have 3 search results, one of them is the following: Start menu: Access Out-of-Process not checked Check that and tab to OK and save the new setting, then try the start menu. Sorry I can’t provide an actual solution/fix for it, but so far I don’t think there is one except to reinstall Windows 10, then reinstall Jaws, all your applications and put back your data from backup.
Best regards, Sieghard

Hope someone can help me with the below query… I am trying to install JAWS 19 in my laptop with Windows home” basic after uninstalling JAWS 2018. The problem is JAWS is silent on various items on the PC like – on the start menu, it only speaks “Cortana” and nothing else. Then it is silent when I open system settings folder or open the option to connect to a network. I have already performed the full recovery couple of times however the problem persists. Has anybody faced a similar issue? I would really appreciate any insights to resolve this. Many thanks Meesha Arora

I suspect you do not have administrator rights; so you will likely have to contact the IT department and have them switch your browser to anything but Edge. Also, to maybe help you understand the changes between Windows 7 and 10. You should be able to tap the Windows key and type the name of the program you want to run and hit enter; but that won't help when you click on links; that is where the default browser needs to be changed. You could try doing that yourself by hitting the Windows key and type default browser, which should put you in settings. HTH, Richard Arthur C.
