No, but Narrator will do that and since it is built into Windows, that should be OK.
On Windows 10, Control+Windows+enter to toggle Narrator on and off and the same insert+1 to do keyboard learn.

Otherwise, you will need to ask Freedom Scientific if they can implement that as an option since both Narrator and NVDA identify those keys. NVDA is more specific, but since it is open source and they won't let you install it, Narrator is the next best option for now.

Hi, Milton. To cause the headings not to wrap, do the following,

1. Open your browser.
2. Press JAWS Key plus the number six on the numbers row (not the NumPad).
3. In the search box, type,

wrap

4. The first suggestion is Wrap Navigation. You want this to be unchecked.
5. Press SPACE on this check box to uncheck it.
6. TAB to OK, and press ENTER.
7. Close, and reopen the browser. Now navigation keys will not wrap
around.

Wrap Navigation‑

When selected, Navigation Quick Key commands wrap after reaching the
beginning or end of an HTML document. When cleared, JAWS speaks a message
informing you that no more matches are found, such as no more tables. This
item is selected by default.
8. The navigation key to go from heading to heading is the H key. In
Office, you will need to press JAWS Key plus the letter Z to be able to
use Quick Navigation. This is because, in a document, you are usually in
edit mode. To use Quick Navigation, you must exit edit mode with JAWS Key
plus Z.

I did all he outlined except the registry edits and Jaws still will not read things like Settings, the Calculator app and other Windows 10 system stuff.

A new Jaws update is about to come out for the public which will contain this new way to access the start menu and it should then read for you.

I can only say that if  you mess with the registry you better know what you are doing especially since I’m not sure whether Jaws would actually read the registry on a system where it doesn’t read settings in which case you would need to use Narrator. If you mess up something in the registry you may very well end up having to reinstall Windows and on any less important system I would have long since done that.

Good afternoon,

The only way to solve this issue is the following:

Uninstall completely jaws and shared components.

Uninstall all other fs products installed on your system including all fs voices.

Remove all the freedom scientific folders located on your hard drive.

Remove all freedom scientific entries from the registry.

And reinstall Jaws from scratch and Jaws will work properly on the start menu of all versions of Windows from windows 7 to windows 10.

Hi Meesha,

Yes, unfortunately I have the same issue on one of my work PC’s, I can use any application just fine, but Jaws will not speak in the Windows search box, the start menu, the Settings app, control Panel, Calculator and other Windows applications.

I an on the Jaws beta team and know a few others have also experienced this, but it seems to be rare and an illusive issue to fix, for me this started over a year ago on this one PC and so far no Windows update, Jaws update, Windows repair or Jaws repair/reinstallation has fixed it. I am convinced that unfortunately the only way to fix this would be to reinstall Windows absolutely fresh and from scratch.

I am running the current Beta version of Jaws, but I think the June update already included an alternative way to display the start menu and for me Jaws now reads the start menu on this machine, but still not the Settings app, Windows search box or Calculator.

Open Jaws Settings Centre with Jaws Key + 6 on the number row, make sure default settings are loaded by pressing Control + Shift + D, then type “access” in the search box. Tab once and you should have 3 search results, one of them is the following:

Start menu: Access Out-of-Process not checked

Check that and tab to OK and save the new setting, then try the start menu.

Sorry I can’t provide an actual solution/fix for it, but so far I don’t think there is one except to reinstall Windows 10, then reinstall Jaws, all your applications and put back your data from backup.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hello all,

I have recently joined this group and find the information shared very informative.

Hope someone can help me with the below query…

I am trying to install JAWS 19 in my laptop with Windows home”  basic after uninstalling JAWS 2018. The problem is JAWS is silent on various items on the PC like – on the start menu, it only speaks “Cortana” and nothing else. Then it is silent when I open system settings folder or open the option to connect to a network.

I have already performed the full recovery couple of times however the problem persists.

Has anybody faced a similar issue? I would really appreciate any insights to resolve this.

Many thanks

List Rules

When:
Thursday, 1 August 2019
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-04:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

Sieghard

I am trying to install JAWS 19 in my laptop with Windows home”  basic after uninstalling JAWS 2018. The problem is JAWS is silent on various items on the PC like – on the start menu, it only speaks “Cortana” and nothing else. I am not Tylor, but I bought an Asus Zenbook with a 15 inch touch screen about two and a half years ago. Obviously you would have to look for whatever is the current model, but I really like this laptop. It was, however, expensive at the time I paid about $2,000 Canadian for it. I assume partially that was because of the 4K touchscreen display, turns out I really never use it, but at the time I was curious to try.
It is a very nice looking laptop as well, at the time it came with an Intel I7 sixth generation CPU, 16Gb of RAM and a 512Gb SSD.
It has 1 USB port on the left which can also charge a device like a phone when the laptop is turned off and two more on the right and there is also a USB-C port and an HDMI port. It has one 3.5mm headphone jack which can also be a microphone jack if you were to use it that way, but I never use a 3.5mm microphone any more so it never bothered me and many laptops nowadays don't have two 3.5mm ports any more.
The other nice thing about this laptop is it's battery life, despite the larger screen it gets about 8 hours which of course depends on what you do.
The keyboard is the traditional US style with two Alt keys, a Windows and FN key on the left and an application key on the right. There is a full numeric pad except that the Jaws/Insert key on the numpad is not double wide as is the case on a full desktop keyboard, instead the Insert key is underneath the number 2 and next to it under the 1 is already the right arrow key. This is the only thing which takes a bit of getting used to and of course there are no gaps between F4 and F5 and F8 and F9, but I don't think I have ever seen that on a laptop. It is a very nice keyboard to type on, but then again one should expect a nice keyboard on a $2,000 laptop.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi,

About 53 pages and pictures are only 18 in total and all only 1.5 height and width. I was hoping I could at least bring this down to 5-6 Mb but as I’ve tried with 7-zip, not much change to warrant compressing.

Ah.

So it’s probably the jpegs taking up most of the 1+ mb filesize.

In that case, you probably won’t see much more reduction. I don’t know much about 7zip as I never used it extensively, but winrar and the old pkzip and winzip programmes let you choose between different levels of compression. “Normal” was/is usually checked by default. You can set “best” if you want and see if there’s much difference. I don’t know why this option isn’t the default nowadays because it doesn’t take most modern PCs long to zip o r rar up large amounts of data, but that’s still the case in winrar as well. Still, I just have to select the appropriate item in the dialogue box and hit enter and, there you go, it’s done.

Still think though that you won’t see much result if the file is full of pictures. How small do you actually want to make this thing?
