Notepad++ and Jaws

Richard Turner

Someone on this list, I think, mentioned using Notepad++ for creating web pages.

Since my previous software has stopped working I checked it out.

Jaws reads the status line after each character press, which makes it unusable for me.

Any way to stop that behavior?

the passwords will be updated.

does anybody know if it is possible to unlock a Bitlocker partition

jumps into the password field for a moment but immediately jumps to
another element of the screen. It seems to be impossible to enter a

Re: need help unmuting volume

Addendum and apology.

I had somehow missed Shankar C's earlier suggestion about simply hitting the HOME key after the volume mixer window has been opened using WinKey+R and typing in sndvol.

That method is simpler, better, and more foolproof as it unmutes and puts volume up to 100% in one key press.  If you want to lower the volume from 100% you can then use Down Arrow until you reach the volume that's desired.

Re: need help unmuting volume

The following is a technique you can try when stuck, but it requires some faith as you're going to be doing it silently (like there's any other choice under the circumstances you'd need to use it).

1.  Hit WinKey+R
2.  Type sndvol, which is going in the Open edit box without feedback, then press Enter
3.  The volume mixer will have opened, and focus will be on the main speaker/headphone volume.
4.  Try up arrow multiple times (at least 10 or so) until either you actually hear the Windows volume chimes getting louder with each press, or it stays silent.  If you're hearing something just keep going up with the up arrow until you have the volume you want and close the volume mixer window.
5.  If you hear nothing after multiple up arrow presses at step 4 that means you have actually used the mute function rather than just lowering the volume to zero.  Now hit TAB, once, which should have you on the Mute/Unmute toggle button for the main speaker/headphones.  Hit spacebar, this should unmute your speakers to whatever volume you had them set prior to invoking mute.  However, this gives no auditory confirmation that it has worked, it just unmutes the speakers.  Now SHIFT+TAB to throw focus back to the volume slider and play with up and/or down arrow until you have the volume you want.

If you play with this a few times just to get confidence with it when someone's around to bail you out, if necessary, you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Hi Tia!

Chrome works just as well in Windows 7.

Thank you for your feedback. I hope you learn a lot from the tutorial, and enjoy using Chrome as much as I do!

David, thanks so much for your excellent tutorial.  I have Wuin10 at home, so I will probably be switching to Chrome at home.  At work here, I am still working with Windows 7.  Is Google Chrome very different in windows 7?  tia

Have a great day, 73

Thank you so very much.

I feel so great that you are all editing my tutorials, and making them easy for people to follow.

I like the Headings idea really well.

I will be putting four more written tutorials on One Drive tomorrow, and I will send you a link to my One Drive folder that you can download, and please change the format, and even edit what would make the tutorials easier for people to understand.

We all can offer something to these tutorials.

I will give you the blue print, in a sense, and all of you, working together, can make them even better. This is how we can help all blind people.

Thank you, all of you!

Greetings,

Since David gave blanket permission to put his tutorial out there and everywhere, and I don’t like using bookmarks in Word, I did a version with Headings.  Pressing insert+f6 brings up the headings list and you can then arrow down and hit enter on the section you want.

I also did a tiny bit of grammar editing and one or two typos.

I put it on my web site, and here is the direct link to the word docx file:

Re: Creating Column and Row Headers in XL

Hi there.  Replace the word attendance with title.  So your define name field should have the following text.

Title..k15.  See if that works for you.

Subject: Creating Column and Row Headers in XL

Hi group,

Hope all are well. New to Jaws and Windows, I’m trying to create a spreadsheet with row and column headers which read aloud while navigating across cells enclosed in these headers.

I'm creating an attendance schedule where  cells B1;K1 contain  names of students. Cells A2;A15 contain days of the week. I’ve tried using the  . builtin naming function in XL but unfortunately its not working for me. I’ve navigated my curser to cell A1, then pull up the define name function under the formula’s tab and enter into it “attendance..K15”.

running XL 2016 and Jaws 2019. any ideas are super appreciated.

Thanks!
