How to update JAWS 2020
Hello,
I currently have JAWS 2019 running on my system and I am entitled to JAWS 2020 as a part of my SMA. I would like to confirm whether I need to download JAWS 2020 on my system seperatley or it will automatically be updated if I click “Check
for updates” in JAWS 2019 help option?
Thanks,

Dear Diane & List: You are correct. The offline installer is close to 1 GB mot 1 TB. While Vispero says their installer can determine the correct version to install, I find it always installs the 32-bit version on my 64-bit system. Brian K. I for one am glad Vispero has finally left the 50's and early 220's behind and does no longer send out what to many are useless pieces of plastic especially since in my case I haven't had a PC with a DVD drive for many years. The Jaws installer has changed some time ago and it is now a fairly small setup program which means it does not contain all the files needed for installation, instead it will download what is required from the web. This approach is used by increased software companies, it's been this way with Adobe Acrobat Reader for a long time, Chrome and Microsoft Edge are both installed this way, if you subscribe to Microsoft Office 365 the installer for the Office suite is also like this and so are many others. The one difference between installers like most of the ones I mentioned above and the Jaws installer is that you can actually keep the Chrome installer or the Edge installer and if you run it a year from now on a new system it will still work and also download whatever is the latest version. For Jaws you still need to download a different setup program for the version of Jaws you want to install, but since it is only a bit over 40 Mb, it only takes a few seconds on most fast internet connections nowadays and another nice thing is that you don't have to worry about 32 Bit and 64 Bit, the installer does both, looks at your system and knows which to install. The older installer was about 180 Mb, but it still downloaded the OCR component during the installation. If for some reason you need a full installer or maybe you have a very slow internet connection where it's better to have everything downloaded to your computer first you can still download the entire DVD so to speak, it's I think something like a 500 or 600 Gb download and it is entirely meant to be run offline if needed.

The Jaws installer has changed some time ago and it is now a fairly
small setup program which means it does not contain all the files
needed for installation, instead it will download what is required
from the web.
This approach is used by more and more software companies, it's been
this way with Adobe Acrobat Reader for a long time, Chrome and
Microsoft Edge are both installed this way, if you subscribe to
Microsoft Office 365 the installer for the Office suite is also like
this and so are many others.
The one difference between installers like most of the ones I
mentioned above and the Jaws installer is that you can actually keep
the Chrome installer or the Edge installer and if you run it a year
from now on a new system it will still work and also download whatever
is the latest version.
For Jaws you still need to download a different setup program for the
version of Jaws you want to install, but since it is only a bit over
40Mb, it only takes a few seconds on most fast internet connections
nowadays and another nice thing is that you don't have to worry about
32 Bit and 64 Bit, the installer does both, looks at your system and
knows which to install.
The older installer was about 180 Mb, but it still downloaded the OCR
component during the installation.
If for some reason you need a full installer or maybe you have a very
slow internet connection where it's better to have everything
downloaded to your computer first you can still download the entire
DVD so to speak, it's I think something like a 500 or 600 Gb download
and it is entirely meant to be run offline if needed.
Regards,
Sieghard

The reason is because they make major updates through the year now and
would to keep sending out c d's for the updates.
They suggest downloading the update and then installing. Then saving
the update on a thumb drive and do for each update through the year.

I am talking about the offline installer. As the name implies, it contains everything you could possibly need for an installation, all the OCR components, help files and so on and it is 832MB which is very close to 1 Terrabyte.
If you don't believe me go to the Freedom Scientific download page for Jaws and select the "Offline installer for secure environments".

Are you sure you aren't using any of those for other versions of Jaws? Go into the properties for Jaws 2019 and see what the shortcut is. I don't know how many versions of Jaws you have on your system, but I assume it isn't unlikely that you have at least Jaws 2019 and Jaws 2020 and a keyboard shortcut combination can of course only be used once.

Why don't you just download it, the fact is that even if they continue this in my opinion useless and wasteful tradition of mailing out DVD's, the version which will be current by the time you receive the DVD will already be newer than the original Jaws 2020.1910.54 release which you would get on the DVD.

Re: [External] J2020.1910.54.400 Download Link + What's New
Hi Orlando,
First of all this seems to be something which appears to be quite unique to you since I can easily add stuff to the dictionary. Furthermore, I am on the private Jaws beta team and I have heard about no such bug, in fact, another member of said beta team posted a message today referring to your post on this list asking if this is a problem for others. As for Vispero not caring I also have to disagree. I have had some major problems with my point of sale and accounting software which both is legacy software. Under Windows 7 I could read and do a lot with the Jaws cursor which does no longer work in Windows 10. I contacted Vispero with this and they have assigned one of their developers who happens to be in Germany where I am also from originally to investigate this because it is also an interesting issue for them because they feel that if they can get the Jaws cursor to read this information again it will also help them overall to bring back more functionality as we knew it in Windows 7. It is quite a process to get this software up and running because first one has to install SQL, then the software, then about 4 updates and fearture packs as well as two pieces of additional software which piggybacks onto the database and which add functionality. I provided all this to the developer via Dropbox as well as an older backup of my retail store's database and he has already made progress which I know also translates to other applications. I know It can be frustrating when you encounter an issue which prevents you from doing things the way you are used to, I spend a lot of time, in fact, about 2 years corresponding with various people from Vispero before somebody said they would take this on because they felt it would be of use not just to me but also to many other people who use older software for work or their own business. One thing I found is that it always pays off to approach a company using a reasonable tone, laying out the problem and letting them know that you understand that they also are busy, have priorities and they may not get to your issue right away. Jaws 2020 public beta has only been around for a month or so and if there really is an issue which is not caused by a unique problem or configuration on your system I am sure they will get to it. In the next Jaws update another issue which has come up on this list from time to time will be fixed, sorry, I can't say what because I agreed to not disclose private beta related stuff, but believe me, Vispero and their developers are working hard on fixing stuff and adding features.
Best regards, Sieghard

I'm more concerned about old features continuing to work than new features. Ever since the first beta and now with the official 2020 release, I cannot add dictionary entries to my default file, nor can I associate another file as my default dictionary. My only recourse is to add entries manually to the file in Notepad, which is tedious and time consuming. How can such a basic aspect of screen-reading software go unnoticed and unattended, especially since I've reported this problem since the first beta, and sent Vispero Support detailed crash dumps? I for one am glad Vispero has finally left the 90's and early 2000's behind and does no longer send out what to many are useless pieces of plastic especially since in my case I haven't had a PC with a DVD drive for many years. The Jaws installer has changed some time ago and it is now a fairly small setup program which means it does not contain all the files needed for installation, instead it will download what is required from the web. This approach is used by more and more software companies, it's been this way with Adobe Acrobat Reader for a long time, Chrome and Microsoft Edge are both installed this way, if you subscribe to Microsoft Office 365 the installer for the Office suite is also like this and so are many others. The one difference between installers like most of the ones I mentioned above and the Jaws installer is that you can actually keep the Chrome installer or the Edge installer and if you run it a year from now on a new system it will still work and also download whatever is the latest version. For Jaws you still need to download a different setup program for the version of Jaws you want to install, but since it is only a bit over 40Mb, it only takes a few seconds on most fast internet connections nowadays and another nice thing is that you don't have to worry about 32 Bit and 64 Bit, the installer does both, looks at your system and knows which to install.

Can't create a shortcut for JAWS 2020.
Hi to all. For some weird reason when I go to the properties of JAWS 2020, it won't allow me to create a shortcut. I've tried Alt CTRL J, I've tried CTRL Shift J and no luck. Should the older(2019) version be deleted, and if yes, what's the best method to do this? Add/remove programs or programs and settings, right in Windows. If you type "add" or "remove" in to the start menu search field, you'll hear the result and be able to launch the Windows uninstaller. You can also uninstall programs from the disc cleanup utility by switching to the second tab rather than the first, where all the cleanup options are set. Here, you get a list of your installed apps, where you'll undoubtedly find JAWS 2019. Further, when the new(2020) Jaws version starts, it says something about an older version being detected, and asking me if I want to "import/migrate settings". Is this anything to be concerned about, and should this have been done via the tandem session when the 2020 release was installed? Not necessarily. Some users keep multiple JAWs versions on the same system, each with different settings. I personally don't do this because I usually don't want or need older JAWS versions for anything. However, with 2020, and with the previous three betas, I haven't been able to save dictionary entries using the dialogue. I can only save the manually. So perhaps, if I get really desperate, I can reinstall 2019 solely to have a working dictionary dialogue. Orlando Enrique Fiol

Re: Found my first problem with JFW 2020
I can't believe the mistake I made about my installation of j2020. It's this simple: I kept on hearing j2019, rather than J20.19 and the rest of the version number, thus thinking j2020 had not installed properly.

The reason is because they make major updates through the year now and would to keep sending out c d's for the updates. They suggest downloading the update and then installing. Then saving the update on a thumb drive and do for each update through the year.

This is true. I do remember hearing on a podcast and later reading somewhere they would no longer be sending out CD/DVD discs with JAWS.

Why don't you just download it, the fact is that even if they continue this in my opinion useless and wasteful tradition of mailing out DVD's, the version which will be current by the time you receive the DVD will already be newer than the original Jaws 2020.1910.54 release which you would get on the DVD.

I for one am glad Vispero has finally left the 90's and early 2000's behind and does no longer send out what to many are useless pieces of plastic especially since in my case I haven't had a PC with a DVD drive for many years. Re: Plugins for Windows Media Player
Oh yeah, only the classic skin will work properly. Accept no substitutes.

JAWS reads the tracks in the play list as i up and down arrow through it and the cross-fading works after a little fiddling with it. Thanks for baring with me through this. And as Winamp hasn’t been updated much since 2013 or so (except for that 5.8 beta version that was mysteriously released recently), JAWS 15 should really still do what you need. However, if you are on Windows 10 with JAWS 15, you may already be experiencing a whole host of problems. I had planned to run the music from a Windows 10 laptop running JAWS 2019 and Winamp which allows cross fading of songs, but JAWS does not tell me which screen that I am in nor does it let me arrow up and down through the play list as it used to with Windows 7 on my desktop machine. I decided to use Windows Media Player on the laptop which does let me arrow through the play list and reads the tracks, but no cross fading feature. Is there a plugin for Windows Media Player that will do this for me? I tried looking at the plugin download menu option through the player, but no joy. Just sound enhancers for surround sound.

Re: a couple of Jaws questions
Hi.
No need to remove the old version -- you may find it useful someday if something isn't working right. There's also not much need, in my experience, to keep numerous old versions of the screen-reader around -- but some even still swear by JAWS 17 for certain things, so eh, it's up to you.
The other thing is also up to you --- you have configuration files in your old jFW. JAWS can "import" those settings to the new one. Say "yes" and you'll never see that message again.

Hi List:
Had latest Jaws (2020 downloaded(via tandem) this morning. 2019 version still remains. Should the older(2019) version be deleted, and if yes, what's the best method to do this?
Further, when the new(2020) Jaws version starts, it says something about an older version being detected, and asking me if I want to "import/migrate settings". Is this anything to be concerned about, and should this have been done via the tandem session when the 2020 release was installed?
Thank you,
David S. Pearson.
