Re: using Jaws on a mac

MacVisonaries is an option but most Mac lists will not like you talking about Windows apart from the actual installation of the VM.
I have not used a Mac for over a year now but I would offer the suggestion that you use VMware Fusion as your VM client. This was accessible in setting up windows the last time I tried. I thought Fusion was the perfect way of having the best of both worlds with a Mac running windows at the same time. I have to say that I was wrong. There are hidden drawbacks. If you are going to be a heavy Windows User then I would suggest that you do not accept the default split of processor cores for the Virtual machine but increase both processor and ram available to the machine to increase performance level. If you lack an insert key you will probably need to use Sharp Keys in the VM to remap a key as your insert key. Remember also that you will have to use one of your Jaws activations for the VM. Also running cloud storage like iCloud and DropBox on a VM can be complicated as you end up hosting the same mirrored files physically twice on your Mac and your VM virtual drive . If you use hardware peripherals such as scanners and/or Bluetooth devices do not expect life to be straightforward with the VM.
For what it is worth I used a VM for some years but eventually abandoned it. I decided Windows machines were better for running Windows and left the Mac for running the Mac software for which it was best. Unlike Macs Windows laptops etc were so cheap that by the time you had bought Fusion and a legit copy of Windows etc. there was little to be gained.
Unlike running cloud on a VM cloud software like DropBox and iCloud work brilliantly if you are working across multiple physical machines of a Mac and a Windows machine. This made it comparatively easy to share files across both devices.
Just my views.

Currently, using the Jaws 2020 version released in the past week, Jaws does not announce any row number regardless of the arrowing speed. Re: saving documents in Word

Hi, You can change where the document is saved under Wordc Options. In Word: Hit ALT & F Hit “T” on keyboard Arrow down to “Save” Make your changes. I can choose to save to One Drive and later I can choose to save to “This Computer” Both of these are check boxes. I can also choose to save a any location through the Browse button.
Hope this helps. Also, you can turn on and off the “Auto Save” functions in this area.

Hi, I am not, at the moment, sure of where the setting is that can fix this. It occurs because of One Drive and Office 365. My workaround is I hit F12 and save as another document with a different file name. Also, I do not use AutoSave function.

You might want to check the saving options you have by hitting alt+f, then t, and arrow down to saving and tab through there. I’m not sure what would cause your issue, I always get prompted to save my changes. .

I am using Jaws 18 with Windows 10 and Office 365. Until relatively recently, when closing a document in MS Word with alt f4 or control f4, if I’d made changes, I would be asked if I wanted to save the changes before closing. But now it just closes and saves. Today this was a real nuisance as I’d slightly customised my Christmas letter for an individual, but I hadn’t intended this to change the original letter which still needs to go out to some people. When I closed it though, it didn’t ask if I wanted to save the changes – it just did so! How in future can I prevent this from happening? Alison

Thanks for your reply and instructions George.
I have tried all of the steps on numerous occasions but still cannot get Jaws to read the row position in a table while using the latest version released only a few days ago.
However, if I change to the final copy of Jaws 19 then the row number is spoken as normal. It appears to me that something has been broken in the latest 2020 version.

Hi,
Prior to installing the latest Jaws 64 bit update a few days ago, Jaws would read the row position in a web based table as I arrowed up the column but since the update, Jaws no longer gives this information.
Can someone inform me which settings need to be changed so once more Jaws can give this info?
Thanks

Re: Preferred method to delete older version of Jaws?
Can you elaborate? You can install Jaws on a new system where no previous user files exist and all works as it should. What exactly do you mean by “lose MS Office ribbon functionality”?

Further to the below, also retain “user settings.” Else, you will lose MS Office ribbon functionality; which I learned the hard way.

I would use the Windows control panel, programs and features, and uninstall from there, but you probably should leave shared components.

Hi Edward,

You are correct, I hadn't checked this in some time. But I am also 99.9% certain that this was not always the case and it is quite possible that Microsoft's competitive Office 365 option may have caused Dropbox to increase their plan from 1 to 2 Tb and of course storage continues to decrease in cost as well. Anyways, thanks for pointing this out, if somebody did need more than 1 Tb then Dropbox Plus or Dropbox Professional which apparently offers 3 Tb would be a good option.

Hi,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
You can as someone mentioned upgrade to the drop box paid account, which if you use a lot of storage is really worthwhile as I think they give 2TB of storage space. If you just want to increase your drop box limit a little, another way to do this is using your drop box referral link. For everyone that uses your referral link to sign up you get an additional 500mb of extra storage (up to I think a maximum of 16gb of extra storage). It's also possible to purchase extra storage through services which get referrals for you, so you can get that extra 16gb of storage space for a one off payment of about $15 or so, although that’s not directly with drop box. Personally I've tried drop box, one drive and google drive, and although all work ok with jaws, I've always found drop box the easiest to use , especially since I have various folders I share with multiple other users and for project collaboration, plus I find the IOS app really nice and easy to access too. Too. Paul

Well, here are the steps I use. I open the settings menu, alt+g I arrow down to workflow. I set the acquire settings I want, in my case, acquire in background, etc. Then, control+tab to the process tab. Make sure Exact view is checked. Hit OK. Then alt+g and arrow to save settings. Select default and say yes when it asked if you want to overwrite it. Then, when I open Openbook again, that settings is saved. I of course, skipped a whole lot of settings, but since the exact view is the main one you are focused on, I went with a shorter explanation.
HTH,

Hi Richard, I am saving them to the default settings, and I put it on Exact view. What else do I need to do and how do I do it? This program is brand new to me.

Under the Settings menu, are you saving the settings with that dialog and saving it to your default settings, or giving it another name? Also, did you adjust the Workflow, Process tab before saving the settings?
My settings always hold with exact view.
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Pastor Gil Pries
Using Openbook 9.0. When I set the view to exact view, and save the setttings, when I exit Openbook, it defaults to text view again. Is there any way to save the view settings?
