Re: JAWS and Plex Media Server
Tyler Wood
Hi, I’d just like to throw a few things out there to clear the waters. Note that I literally got into Plex a few days ago. You do not need a plex pass to listen to media on a mobile device. A one time fee of $4.99 will unlock it for that and future devices – this goes for the app store and google play store. I’m not sure what said friend was doing, but it all depends on your upload speed. Obviously if you’re trying to sync a huge movie using your own internet connection it might not be as fast as copying it to one drive. How are folks using plex on Windows with jaws? How do you find the experience? I should add here that I know you don’t need to pay anything if you’re going from computer to computer – and plex pass is far more than just letting you listen to your own content. It includes a streaming service similar to Netflix, hence the monthly $4.99. This is also clearly spelled out in the support articles. I’m currently using it with Sonos (the music part) and for my needs it is working quite well. Your mileage may vary, of course, and it all depends on your needs, but I struggle to find something that is as open as this as far as streaming your own media from your home computer to just about any device on the planet that doesn’t involve some ridiculously complex setup. This seems to be a lot of set it and forget it, and the plex server software is web based and very useable with Jaws.

Tony,
I'll describe how I do it with Word 1010 on my desktop computer running Windows 7. Your results may vary depending on your version of Wofd.
1. Open the applicable docx file with the label. I normally save mailing label files which only contain the address to be printed. 2. I press alt + M to place focus on the top ribbon bar and right arrow until Mailings has focus then I down arrow to move to the lower ribbon bar. 3. I right arrow until I hear Labels and press the enter key. 4. A mailing label dialog opens with the address from the docx file already listed and highlighted in the address section of the dialog. 5. Alt + F selects the radio button to print a full page of the same label and alt + N selects the radio button to print a single label. 6. Tab once to move to the spin box to select the row of labels on which the single label is located and tab once again to move to the spinner box to select the column to select the appropriate column. 7. Press alt + O to open the dialog where you can select the label model and type. 8. After all settings are selected, press alt + P to print the label.

Tony,
If I'm understanding your question, I don't have any great workarounds for identifying which labels are left on a sheet of Avery 5160 which contain 10 rows of 3 labels per row as I mentioned in my first post. I can sort of feel by touch which labels have been used so I can properly identify the row and column of the next unused label when printing individual labels. Also, when I've moved down a sheet so that the only ones left are the bottom two rows, I can flip the sheet over so that those two remaining rows are at the top so it's like I'm starting with row 1 again.
I hope this helps but post back if I misunderstood your question.

I have had some problems putting individual labels into the correct spot on a partially used label sheet. Do you have any suggestions for that?
Tony
From: main@jfw.groups.io [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Alan Lemly
I learned a long time ago after repeated envelope jams in the office laser printer to print on labels instead of envelopes. I prefer the Avery 5160 labels which come 3 to a row with 10 rows for a total of 30 labels on a sheet the same size as an 8 and a half by 11 inch sheet of paper and that can be loaded in a laser printer paper tray. Microsoft Word allows for label printing and you can select the label type and style and either print a full page of the same label or specifically identify what row and column label you are printing and print them individually. The sheet never jams in my black and white laser printer and I remove the printed label from the sheet and stick it on my envelope of choice for mailing. I keep a full sheet of return address labels which I use as needed.
I recommend that those having trouble printing addresses on envelopes give this method a go. It works great with Word 2010.

You are not making any sense. You cannot print an envelope without some kind of program. You cannot simply place an envelope in the printer and print an address on it without launching a program like MS Word to print it. So which program are you using?

You could use VLC for this. I assume you mean .wma format? VLC will convert anything, though the interface is a bit complicae/not obvious d and even though I've been using it to play videos for years, I'm still learning a lot about it.

Well for John and all the best things to do is 1. Follow the FS blog and 2. Listen to FS cast to hear all things GFS encluding JAWS, Fusion, etc. In all the years of using JAWS I've never gotten such emails. Oh and finally follow Vispero @freedomsci on Twitter.

Yes, the upgrade charge is twice the SMA and the SMA gets you to upgrades for half the single upgrade cost. But if you let your SMA run out you have to pay the upgrade then pay the SMA cost to get back on the SMA plan.

That is correct, Mario. I suppose the old copy will still sit on his computer like it is for any of us, but the annual license will give him a JAWS 2020 license for the year. Leaving that old copy on hand will be nice, should there be any reason he no longer wants to pay for the annual license. I think that once he's stops paying for the annual license, the new copy of JAWS will revert to a demo mode.

websites appearing strangely
James English
Hello,
I am starting to lose the plot with websites appearing strangely. This happens on the odd occasion, lasts about 2 weeks and then sorts itself out on its own: obviously I'd prefer if there was a way of sorting it out a lot faster from my end. It is browser independent though only appears to affect one browser at a time )IE or Chrome), occurs with both jaws and nvda, and is highly annoying. The best example I can give is with messenger.com, wherein various things (such as the search box) will disappear, and the conversation headings will be replaced with blank lines. Any help in this matter would be appreciated, - James

Re: Chrome & PDF's
JM Casey
Funny, I noticed ctrl-w (well, I used ctrl-f4) closing the browser yesterday when I thought there was another tab open. My understanding of the behaviour is that if you only have one tab open, this will normalyl close the browser. So I just assumed that I was mistaken and had had only one tab opena nd not two as I had thought.

There must have been a chrome update lately as yesterday it started complaining about uBlock Origin, claiming it was a data security risk -- of course if you read between the lines, what it's actually saying is that it wants to use your data and uBlock is preventing this. lol

Re: JAWS 2020 update Email
Are you sure you aren't mistaken these emails with those Mike usually sends out, they contain the download links and the What's New. Anyways, there really isn't much point to wait, Jaws 2020 was officially released a couple of weeks ago and all you have to do is to go to www.FreedomScientific.com and look for it. If you insist on an official email you might wait quite a while, sort of like going to a friend's house and finding the door wide open, but you won't go in because he hasn't called out "Come in", I'd just go in 😂

I have always received a newsletter Email from FS announcing the release of the update including links to the update files. I have not received that Email yet and wonder where the other members of this list found out about the release of the update.
Thanks,

I have never received such an email from FS about an upgrade to a new version. being subscribed to this ml, someone eventually tends to mention it (Mike B).

Van Lant, Robin
Are you sure it's opening the PDF in Adobe? I find that PDFs that open in Google are readable by JAWS, whereas PDFs that opened directly in IE were not.

The big selling point to the annual license is that you won't need to do any catch up payments to get the newest license. Eric D. says this a lot on the FS Cast for those who have an older version of JAWS. For those of us with a current SMA, it doesn’t seem to be a benefit to move to the annual license. It really is a nice method for breaking down the initial investment barrier and also for allowing people to move between screen readers without the guilt of having purchased a really expensive initial license.

Given the relatively rapid development of Windows 10, you will find that in 2 or 3 or 4 years you may not be able to get the best experience from Windows 10 unless you also have the latest release of Jaws, furthermore new features are added which often can be very useful such as Picture Smart in Jaws 2019 or the new Jaws Scan cursor in Jaws 2020 which kicks in whenever you open a Windows 10 app such as the Calculator etc. If you don't get an SMA which entitles you to two full upgrades and you want to upgrade, say in 3 years, you then basically have to buy two sMA'S, the first to cover you for the two versions you missed and another to get you up to date. For example: Say you now buy Jaws 2020 along with an SMA. This will get you full access to Jaws 2020 and it will also entitle you to get Jaws 2021 and Jaws 2022. Lets assume you buy Jaws 2020 without SMA, but in the fall of 2022 you want to get Jaws 2023. You would then have to buy two SMA's, one to cover Jaws 2021 and Jaws 2022, then a second SMA which would then get you Jaws 2023 and entitle you to Jaws 2024. In the end you pay the same except you have to pay for two SMA's all at once and you may actually pay more because often if you buy an SMA right away you get it for a slightly lesser price. I believe you are in India and I don't know how it is handled there, but I believe in the US and Canada you get a bit of a discount if you buy a new SMA within a couple of months after the old one runs out. -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io On Behalf Of ARORA Meesha Sent: Thursday, November 7, 2019 12:46 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Any difference between JAWS home and commercial version Thanks all and yes, the home version also can be installed on 3 computers. Re: Removing an annual license

Hi Ann,

If memory serves, to remove an activation you go to the JAWS entry in the programs list on your start menu, then Utilities, then Remove JAWS Authorization. I don't know if this will increase the key count on FS Activate though, you may have to request a count reset too. I should also say that that's the process for removing an ILM key, I'm guessing though don't know that it's the same or similar for removing an annual licence. Cheers, Ed
