Marty,

No insult intended, and I'm happy to help off-group, but this is clearly user error of some sort.   It almost sounds like the main document that went from 41 to 27 lines may have its orientation changed from portrait to landscape.

Label sheets are based upon their templates, and over time certain label makers have changed their template numbers, and that could be at work here.

If the material in question is not private feel free to send me the original files via e-mail (use the Reply to Sender link at the bottom of this message) and I'll see what shows up on this end.

Did you change the default margin size?
I usually keep mine down to a half an inch, .5, unless I'm doing something special.
I believe the default margin size is over an inch.
That is in page setup in my older Word.

Subject: Number of lines of print per page in a MS Word Document

Why is it that in older versions of MS Word, I could get 41 lines of print on a single page using 12 point times new roman font and now, I can only get 27 lines of print with the same font?  I have checked the page size and line spacing and it is the same.  I have several documents that were created in Word 2000 and if I save them as Word 2007 docx files, they have more pages.  this is true for label sheets that I have also.  They used to be 10 labels in a column on one page and now, they are 8 labels in a column with the bottom 2 rows going onto a second page.  Can anyone help me fix this mess?

when pressing numpad 6, make sure the numpad is
set to the reading keypad (insert+numpad - (it's

if there's only the default configuration. you
can setup (I don't know if there's a limit)
custom configurations taylored to your needs.
you can switch to a custom configuration
manually after starting K1000 (alt+t and then l,
arrow to the configuration name and enter). I
don't know if there's a way to automatically
load a custom configuration instead of K1000

You have to be in an edit field, don't you? I do have to tab then tab back to get Jaws to read anything. If I don't it is as if I didn't open anything. It will read the edit field. But after the tab and shift tab I can select them.

All I know to do about this is to learn the alt+ key shortcut for any options you plan to change often, then you can probably hit that key once you’ve tabbed into the page for that category. To my knowledge, no other screen reader will help, it’s just how the Options pages are constructed now.

I switched to Office 365 and also to JAWS sometime around the beginning of 2018.  Before that I was a Window Eyes user.  I have noticed something about how JAWS reads the choices in the Options dialog box for all Office products that I find challenging.  I’m not sure if this started when I started using one of these products or with an update to one of them.  I’d like to know if others have found a way to change this behavior or if others agree that it is challenging and warrants a change request to Freedom Scientific.  Here’s the issue:

Use Alt F, then T to open the Options dialog box.  Arrow up and down to select a  panel of options.  From here, we tab through all the choices for that group of options.  Microsoft has these choices on each panel arranged in groups with headings.  As I tab, JAWS is reading the heading before each option.  In some cases the heading is long, so I have to wait to hear the whole heading before I know which option I’m on.   Some panels, like the mail options panel in Outlook have a really long list of choices, so it’s a really tedious process to get to the option I want to change if ti’s far down in the list.  This used to not be the case, but I don’t’ recall when I noticed the change.

What are other’s opinions of this behavior?

Shirly,

That's great that my post helped you get your spreadsheet working again. And we're never too old to keep learning. I think the real problem is losing the desire to keep learning.

When you're ready to do next month's spreadsheet, I would suggest starting with your September version, saving it with an October name, inputting the September ending balance in this October spreadsheet, deleting the September input in the October sheet, and you should be ready to go. That may or may not be the same procedures you normally do. Fortunately, with Excel, many different procedures can lead to the same result so you can pick whichever one works best for you.

All the best with your Excel efforts and may your account balance remain high and in the black.

Hi Shirley,

What might be wrong with your formula is hard to diagnose with the information you've provided. I'll state what I think your bank debits and deposits spreadsheet looks like and we'll go from there. I suspect row 1 is your column headings and that column D contains debits, column E contains deposits, and column F contains a running balance. Assuming you use a different spreadsheet for each month, I would suggest that cell F2 be the opening balance for the month which should equal your closing balance from the previous month's spreadsheet. I personally would manually input the starting balance for cell F2 because I'm not a big fan of using formulas to bring amounts from other spreadsheets. Row 3 should contain the activity for the current month so the formula in cell F3 would be =(F2-D3+E3). I expect columns A through C contain date, description, and some other text field but those don't have formulas and don't seem to be giving you a problem.

I would check to make sure your opening balance in cell F2 is a manually input number and then I would input the formula I provided above into cell F3 and go from there. If you're still having problems, make sure columns D through F are formatted as numbers.

Good luck.

Van Lant, Robin

It’s also good to note that formulas like this don’t work if your spreadsheet has gotten switched to R1C1 cell referencing.   This occasionally happens to me if I download a report from certain programs.  However it occurs, you can check and change this setting under File / Options / Formulas and tab to the first checkbox under Working with Excel formulas,   In my recollection, JAWS still reads cell references at A1, B2, and so on, even if the reference style e gets switched.  I usually figure out I’m having a problem only when I try to type in a formula and it dosen’t recognize the alphanumeric cell references.

Good luck.

Subject: Need help with an Excel formula

Hi Listers,

First, I do not fully know how to use Excel like many of you who probably use it for work. But I do use it for keeping our Writers Club’s roster and my bank account spread sheets. I used to have a formula that I could use in keeping a spread sheet of my bank debits and deposits—balancing my account. The formula I was given was =(E3-D3)+F2 and it helped me keep account of the totals when putting in debits and credits. Used to work great. Now, however, when I start a new monthly spread sheet, I get a message that the formula I key in is an error. I don’t know if something has gotten erased from the formula I had in my original file, or if the formulas have changed over time. Otherwise, I have no need to learn Excel. Can someone just please help me with this formula or tell me what might be wrong?

Thank you.

Shirley

I wouldn’t quite call it a horror and if you have an iPhone you may not have a choice but to use it for a few things. But if all you are concerned about it having an app for your music, making playlists and playing them then I agree that iTunes wuldn’t be my first choice.

Hi. I wouldn't wish ITune for Windows on my worst enemy.  Stick to Winamp or Groove Music or Windows Media player even and they should do a more then adequate job of allowing you to organize your music collection.  ITunes is excellent on the mac, but  a horror on windows.  Cheers!

I started to use Itunes with Jaws 2019 and doesn’t work to well. I have a hard time with the playlists I created to show. Then when I navigate around eventualy a certain playlist shows. At least I thought it did. Then I press enter on the play button and it plays a song in a different playlist. Is there a way to change something in Jaws settings or Itune settings to get it to work better?

It isn't any worse.

What areas are you most concerned with?

Except if it's a 32-bit app where the developer never bothered to change it 64-bit, in this case you maybe able to install it on your iPhone (not sure), but it sure won't run since only 64-bit apps will work.

if anyone still has i tunes version 12.60 i would not upgrade. this is the last version that allows you to backup your apps on your computer.
at least if you have bought an app and it is removed from the apple app store you would still have it on your computer and could reinstall it.
you can not do this with the newest i tunes version.

Hi,

I have been putting off letting ITunes update to the latest version. Before I
do I thought I’d find out if I will regret it.

Thanks.

I tried it in sending a message to myself via computer and even in a post on Facebook.  It worked in both situations.  😊
