Why are you not just using the Kindle app for iPhone? It's perfectly accessible and works really well. That's the only way I read Kindle books. Just curious why you'd go through all the extra hoops of converting them to text if they are already accessible with chapter navigation and such in the IOS app.

In order for Codex to successfully convert Kindle books to plain text, you need to install Version: 1.17.1 (44183) of the Kindle for PC program on your computer and set it not to automatically update. If it updates to a later version, Codex will no longer work with Kindle books downloaded with it. I successfully installed version 1.17 after inadvertently updating my Kindle for PC on my Windows 7 computer and was able to successfully convert a Kindle book to ePub with Codex. You can download version 1.17 of Kindle for PC from here: http://turner42.com/KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe Alan Lemly

Here is a little more info.

Codex by James Scholes Here is a little section from his web site. I encourage any avid readers to follow the link below and read about it and install the utility. A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the installation and configuration of software for the purposes of gaining access to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but it required heavy use of the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an absolute nightmare to troubleshoot if anything went wrong. Which it frequently did. Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to make the process easier and more intuitive, not only for people wanting to read Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it Codex, a word used from the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient, manuscripts in book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that prototype to include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software is now publicly available to download. Please note, that you can only convert books you have purchased and only for your use--you cannot share them with others without violating the copyright laws and cheating the author out of their tiny royalties. In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install Kindle For PC version 1.17, or earlier, but you can get from my web site 1.17 here: http://turner42.com/KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe Here is the link to the Codex Project web site. http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/ This is Richard again, I purchased a Kindle book recently, Beginnings, A Kate Martinelli novella by Laurie R. King, and I couldn't download it and then update Kindle for PC, which was not a good plan. Make sure you get into the Kindle for PC settings and turn off automatic updates. Also, if you haven't used Kindle For PC, the registration screen is not very accessible and you may need sighted assistance to get your account set up. I think I will uninstall and try grabbing an older version even from the link Dean sent. Richard

Well, the deal apparently is that you can't use any version higher than 1.17 with Codex. Old versions are readily available. I use 1.14.243, but apparently 1.16 works too. Here's a page to find them: https://kindle-for-pc.en.uptodown.com/windows/versions

Uninstall the new version before installing an old version. Then go into the Kindle for Pc program and under options, tell the program not to upgrade automatically. When it prompts you, you can just say no to the upgrade. James Scholes has written a very clear manual about using Codex to convert Kindle books. It is here: http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/ After you read this, if you still have questions, a lot of people can answer them. It's a little tricky to get it set up, but once you do the results are well worth it. Dean

For $50 a year, you can download all the books you want and you can choose Word format, which if you really want as plain text would be rather easy to do.

Asus Laptop. Hi.
To keep this on topic, I’m using JAWS 2020 on the latest Windows 10 PC. It’s an Asus laptop. I don’t remember the model, but it has 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and an 11 inch touch screen. It also has that dreaded FN key, and that is annoying, because you have to hit it along with the function keys to work with some JAWS functions. I have a nice Logitech Bluetooth keyboard that has a numeric keypad, and I made it so the FN key isn’t needed to hit the function keys to do things like have JAWS tell you the time. How do I disable it?
I have one other question. The laptop keyboard doesn’t have a numeric pad, so you use a combination of keys to accomplish something, such as FN+LEFT ARROW is the equivalent of the HOME key. If I make it so the FN key is no longer necessary, would that key combination no longer work?
Thanks in advance for help.

Hi Kevin, Try hitting FN key and Esc key once simultaneously, if that doesn't work use the other method. To disable or enable the function key (Fn) in the BIOS follow the below steps: • Turn off the computer. • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly, about once every second to open the BIOS setup window. • Press the right-arrow or left-arrow keys to navigate to the System Configuration option. • Press the up-arrow or down-arrow keys to navigate to the Action Keys Mode option, and then press the Enter key to display the Enable / Disable menu. • Select the desired mode: • Disabled: Requires pressing and holding the function key (Fn) while pressing one of the F1 through F12 keys to use the action indicated on the action key. Re: How do I make it so I don't have to hit the FN key on an Asus Laptop.
Without a specific model number, it is impossible to give definitive advice, but I'll tell you what I do know from the ASUS support page, [Notebook] Asus Keyboard hotkeys - Introduction, which was updated on March 10, 2020.
ASUS keyboard hotkeys are ON by default. That is you don't have to press Fn+ a function key in order to get the hotkey function activate, e.g., volume up/down. And that's apparently the state you're in. There is a built-in app on ASUS laptops called, ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys, that allows you to toggle between hotkey function and straight function key mode via the radio button you select. Hit Windows Key and immediately start typing "Asus keyboard" and it's likely to be the first search result at the top. Activate the app and then choose the radio button for F1-F12 as opposed to Hotkeys, close the app, and your Function Keys should act as straight function keys. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Tolerance is the positive and cordial effort to understand another's beliefs, practices, and habits without necessarily sharing or accepting them. ~ Joshua Liebman
