Re: How do I get to the "Fast Start" option in Windows 10?
From what you describe it does appear that you have hibernation fully disabled, which would make Fast Startup an impossibility (which is a good thing, in my opinion).
If you want to reenable the ability to hibernate for the machine, you'll need to open an elevated command prompt (admin privileges) and enter the following command: powercfg /hibernate on After exiting, and restarting your system, then see what shows up in the Power Options dialog. - Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Tolerance is the positive and cordial effort to understand another's beliefs, practices, and habits without necessarily sharing or accepting them. ~ Joshua Liebman

If you do not do this you will never have the Fast Startup checkbox available. This may apply to some. On my systems, I get an additional dialog that has combos for time to turn off display or go to sleep, after which is a link labeled "Additional power settings" that must be activated to reveal the Step 2 screen.

Thanks for the article, I agree there are many good reasons for disabling fast start up. However in this case I found it brought no benefit and even made more confusion. And I agree it doesn’t make any logical sense. Interesting how different systems respond with different scenarios.

I haven’t encountered this issue at all. I’m running JAWS 2020 with the latest Outlook for Office 365 under Windows 10. It might be worth checking whether other people with exactly the same software versions as yours are experiencing the problem. Also, if you think you might be able to upgrade out of it, I would suggest trying to upgrade whatever relevant software you can.
From: <main@jfw.groups.io> on behalf of "Norma A. Boge" <naboge@...>
I turned off the reading pane and a couple other things. Seems to help with arrowing through a message list. However, the lag for Jaws responding and my ability to type in the body of a reply message is even worse, probably around 7-8 seconds this time. I do appreciate the reminder about the pane, I wish the settings would just stay but evidently MS doesn’t think that is a priority. Bummer.

From: <main@jfw.groups.io> on behalf of "Norma A. Boge" <naboge@...>
Hi group,
As I await a response from Vispero support, I’m wondering if anyone is experiencing the following:
I have noticed that the lag while using Outlook 365 with Jaws 2020 is even worse than with Jaws 2019. Arrowing through a message list, Jaws simply stops speaking. I can read the title of the window but that’s it. Then after 3-4 seconds I am able to proceed normally through the list. And it takes about 5 seconds before I can type a reply to a message. A few months ago I asked about this lag while in a Outlook webinar with the Microsoft accessibility group. They acknowledged the problem but that was about all they said. I can hardly wait to see what Vispero’s take is.
Helpful feedback welcome. Norma

Re: JAWS won't start after sign-in
Well, that is truly the first time I heard that disabling fast startup has these effects, many tech savvy people are quite agreed upon the fact that if there are issues it may be fast startup which causes them. I prefer to have my computers boot from scratch and to “truly” shut down when I shut them down, also I like to hear the Windows Startup sound when I turn on my PC and you won’t hear it if fast startup is enabled or at least you hear it very inconsistently. Furthermore, all my computers have solid state drives and with fast startup they boot maybe 2 or 3 seconds faster so the time-saving reason of fast startup is pretty irrelevant for me. Here is a good article which is pretty neutral as to the Pros and Cons:
How to disable Windows 10 fast startup (and why you'd want to)

It made the start up issue for Jaws even worse and then Jaws would respond sluggishly for quite a bit. Turning off fast start up can affect many programs.
