might that be the JAWS feature touted as new in either 2019 or 2020, saying
that JAWS will speak before checking your authorization, so you don't have to wait so long to hear that it is running. However, it doesn't do anything
till it makes internal checks and decides what context you are running in. So in my opinion it is a totally useless change which FS calls an improvement. At 07:59 AM 4/24/2020, you wrote:

It sounds like J2020 is set to start on the log-in screen. If you're saying that there's no Jaws window when you, Alt + tab, you probably have J2020 running from the system tray. To find the settings for both these items press, Insert + J, to open the Jaws context menu, press the letter, O, to open, Options, and press the letter, B, to open, Basic.
Now tab to Automatically start Jaws... button and press the spacebar to find your Jaws start settings and tab to Okay and press the spacebar when you're through in here. Now tab 3 times or so to, Run Jaws from system tray, and uncheck this if you want the Jaws window to be in the, Alt + Tab, order, then tab to Okay and press enter to save / close.

In prior versions, JAWS would not fully start until proper authorization was found. Since Authorization can include searching for a network license, the amount of time before JAWS started speaking could be significant. While it is not possible to speed up this period directly, the authorization process will now be completed simultaneously to startup. As JAWS searches for authorization, it enters a new "grace period" authorization state which provides limited functionality, similar to what is available on the logon screen, so you can use speech and braille while authorization discovery takes place. Once the authorization check has finished, JAWS then uses the correct feature set based on the license.

till it makes internal checks and decides what context you are running in.

Hi,
I am new to this group, so i hope i am doing this right. I have jaws2018 and 2020. 2018 works fine, but when 2020 starts, there is no jaws window. It seems to be starting before windows 10 has loaded. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but there was no change.
Any ideas?

Hi Pat, If you go to the JAWS window, and then press the menu bar and go to the Utilities menu, you will find in there Explore Utilities Folder. Press enter on that. In there is an option to Remove JAWS Activation, press enter. HTH

However, i am not paying for an upgrade until i can get a definite sort-out for this problem. As i said in another post, there is always nvda, but i would rather stay with jaws. Downloaded the latest version of jaws from freedom scientific and used it. All apps in startup are turned off, apart from the necessary ones such as the audio drivers etc that are actually necessary. There is an application file for jaws set to "on". I set this to "off" just in case, but no difference. Pat

I wasn't aware of this feature, but you could be right. Now that i think of
it, it started right after i installed the temporary authorization (90 days)

Re: Links, Feature To Read Links Across Verses In a List
Let me go into more depth.
Tabindex is the attribute which effects tab order. If this is set to 0, then the way in which the page is loaded into the browser is the tab order. If a positive value is used which is a WCAG 2.1 failure. Then the focus order will change. If a button is activated and this shows new content. Depending on how the developer has developed the page. The content could appear at the bottom of the virtual buffer (been inserted at the end of the dom) or inserted after the button. So the next item Jaws sees is the new content which is correct behaviour. The page should never use a positive value to achieve tab order as it breaks things very quickly.
The difference between simple and document mode for Jaws is if the link and other elements are presented on their own lines or not. The default document view you will have links and other elements on different lines when using the down arrow. In document view, the link will be a part of the paragraph text. The tab order is still the same.
A lot of web sites use a tabindex -1 to change the tab order of items depending on what you have done on the page.

From what I've been told after learning more about Jaws is that when you,

So how to then select that with jaws, or nvda. Not able to post, keeps telling me to select a board to continue. Any one come across this one and how to fix. Not able to post a topic. Have tried jaws, nvda, windows narrator, tried chrome, edge, ie, firefox and the same or similar issues when I login. Have notified cisco, and the forums, see if they will fix this issue if not, how to get them to make this more accessible. One of the more serious or poor combo box issues with a form or a forum. I think it is loading before it knows for certain whether or not you have a valid key. Sometimes the check works, and sometimes it doesn't and jaws half loads with no actual jaws window. I also think, that it might have something to do with the ilm key, as this is a very old type of authorization for a pc, as against the internet activation method. However, i am not paying for an upgrade until i can get a definite sort-out for this problem. As i said in another post, there is always nvda, but i would rather stay with jaws.
Regards,
Pat

Patrick, are you in the UK? What number do you call? I can see how an email could take several days to receive a reply, but if you call their regular US number (if you are in the UK an duse Skype you can even call their toll free number) you should get somebody on the line right away. The regular number is +1 727-803-8600.

Hi,
I too agree with bill. I sent two emails about jaws 2020 not starting correctly, and got nothing back but "thanks for your email".

Hi, Patrick. Even if JAWS starts before Windows starts, eventually you should get to the desktop, as JAWS is made to start before many programs, and after they load, JAWS still provides voicing, screen content and navigation. If you wish, since Vispero is temporarily closed due to COVID-19, you may give me a call at,

I hope I may be able to help you.

Hi,
Yes, latest version of windows 10 home edition with all necessary and optional updates installed. Checked yesterday, and there is no further updates needed. Downloaded the latest version of jaws from freedom scientific and used it. All apps in startup are turned off, apart from the necessary ones such as the audio drivers etc that are actually necessary. There is an application file for jaws set to "on". I set this to "off" just in case, but no difference. Pat

I cannot set 2018 to "never" and 2020 to "always". No matter where i change it (20158 or 2020), it defaults to the same thing in both versions. The only independant thing is "start at the logon screen". This is different when set in both versions.

The problem may be as I had. Both versions, 18 and 20 are fighting to load at same time. Go into whatever version you do not want to load and correct this and be sure the version you want to load is properly set. Then I do believe this will be better...

Hi,
I wasn't aware of this feature, but you could be right. Now that i think of
it, it started right after i installed the temporary authorization (90 days)
that i was given to try it out. That could explain why 2018 works and 2020 doesn't. If it checks while windows is loading, it could be a problem. When i stop and restart it, it is
fine, but then windows is fully up at that time. Any way to disable/check/change this or something?

might that be the JAWS feature touted as new in either 2019 or 2020, saying
that JAWS will speak before checking your authorization, so you don't have to wait so long to hear that it is running. However, it doesn't do anything
till it makes internal checks and decides what context you are running in. So in my opinion it is a totally useless change which FS calls an improvement. At 07:59 AM 4/24/2020, you wrote:
Hi Mike,
I have tried all this, I tried to post a full message about everything last night, but it was not approved. I think it was too big. Regardless of what I do with jaws2020 (login screen etc), the first time it starts up, there is no window to go to. Insert+j brings you nowhere whether it is running from system tray or not.
If you shut it down (insert+f4) and then restart it, everything is ok. If you don't start it at the login screen, it still produces no window. Pat

Hi,
I am new to this group, so i hope i am doing this right. I have jaws2018 and 2020. 2018 works fine, but when 2020 starts, there is no jaws window. It seems to be starting before windows 10 has loaded. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but there was no change.
Any ideas?

Re: Links, Feature To Read Links Across Verses In a List
All, If you are talking about moving between elements. It depends on how the document object model has been built. The Document Object model is the way in which the browser stores all the information you are reviewing. There is the styling piece that comes into as well which is called the CSS. Not sure if this would effect the tab order. If you have to links on the same line, they should navigate from left to right. Starting with the first link. This is of course assuming there is nothing changing the tab order. The document view will show you ho the page is structured on the page. For example. If you have a line of text with a link in it. Jaws will read the whole line and announces the link as part of it. In simple layout, the first part of the line is spoken, then the link, then the remaining part of the line. I hope the above helps. This surprised me since I had been pictureing tabbing as going horizontally across a page, like with the old school typewriters. This comes from being pretty much self taught and having a lot of questions like this and not having any real teaching about computers or Jaws until I found the Jaws-Users group. So, now let me ask, is the Documents Presentation feature supposed to change the default Jaws navigation from vertical to horizontal when tabbing? I don't have any sight at all so I can't tell. I just tried switching to Google Chrome, setting Document Presentation to either Simple or Screen Layout, and I get the same horizontal traversal with TAB, no matter how this setting is set. Either I'm missing something about this setting, or it is not working properly. What do you call it if you want to read the links vertically? I went to the settings and thought I chose what I should with simple view and the choice for vertical and saved it but things are still read horizontally. What did I miss? Judy & Libby Hi all, there is a setting in JAWS that allows a person to read links on a web page left to right as they are viewed by a sighted person, instead of the normal up and down.
