Hi, So, are the announcements of people entering or leaving considered an alert? Like others, I’ve been thrown into learning zoom. If those are alerts then they can be turned off, but it looks like all alerts will be turned off. This is from pressing insert+h in Zoom with Jaws. .

Hello,
I would like to report on a general problem, not specific to any meeting, and make some suggestions. I am blind and use the JAWS screen reader program. Like millions of other people, many blind people have increased their use of the invaluable Zoom platform to stay in touch and conduct business meetings in these challenging times.
As you know, when participants enter and leave meetings, it is announced. I assume visual participants see something on the screen. Screen reader users hear “John Smith has entered the meeting,” or “Sally Jones has left the meeting.” Because we are forced to hear this audio, it often seriously disrupts meetings, especially those with a large number of participants. Presenters who use screen readers are frequently interrupted and thrown off stride. Participants often have to ask presenters to repeat what they just said. It can even be awkward and embarrassing. Imagine yourself in a meeting conducted in a physical conference room. In the middle of a presentation, somebody suddenly blurts out “My name is John Smith and I am leaving the meeting.” He then gets up and walks out the door. Of course, everybody would be shocked at this outrageous behavior. A milder form of this can happen in Zoom meetings. To be perfectly frank, the main reason I leave meetings early is that I no longer think the discussion worth my time. But I don’t want to be forced to publicly proclaim it. One thing I recently figured out is to rename myself as a fake phone number. That way, when I leave nobody knows who I am. But I should not be compelled to resort to such devious behavior.
While there are ways that blind people can mute their screen reader program, that only works for those individuals who know the keystrokes. It does not help improve overall meeting quality for the other participants. And if I am a presenter, I may need to hear my screen reader program, so I must unmute it, causing me to hear this annoying verbiage again.
Giving participants and hosts the option to disable entry and exit notifications would greatly improve the Zoom meeting experience for screen reader users. I would suggest the following specific modifications to the Zoom app on the PC.
For participants:
For hosts:
It would be advisable to make similar modifications in the appropriate places in the smartphone app.
Thank you for taking time to consider these ideas and hopefully implement them . I strongly believe that if You make these modifications in a future update, it will greatly improve the Zoom meeting experience for blind and visually impaired users of the Zoom Cloud platform.

Thanks for your response. I am now more convinced than ever, that it is an authorization problem. My internet just went down, and jaws started correctly. I have set the computer to not connect to the internet and it works just fine. When the pc does have an internet connection, it doesn't. I think that, therefore, when it is checking while loading (grace period), it gets into a mess. I will update if i can prove this definitely. Pat

Anyway to help you out with the updating of apps, there are two ways to do it: 1.-The quickest way is to once on the App Store Icon, double-tap and hold until you hear the triple-tone; swipe right and you should hear such things ad Updates, Purchases etc. Just double-tap on Updates and away you go! 2.-The long way, is to go into the App Store itself, be sure you’re on the very first tap of the left “Today” before touching the screen with four fingers on the top, and swipe right until you hear My Account, or Account (remember I’ve mine in Spanish), double-tap on Account, swipe right until you hear a button update 7 apps on mine, and if you continue to swipe right, you’ll hear each individual app needing update, or you can go ahead and update all. Good luck! And congrats again on your purchase!

Re: jaws 2020 not starting correctly.
The fact is that you won't have a choice but to upgrade anyways sooner or later and with another Windows 10 update coming very soon it may be sooner rather than later. Even now the emoji panel, for example, is not useable to you with Jaws 2018 and in time there may be other features. If you use Office you will find that it works best with the latest version of Jaws and while I know you said there is always NVDA that is a call you have to make, it wouldn't work for an old Jaws guy like me, I tried it and I just can't get used to how they do stuff. Maybe I don't want to get used to it because I have always kept up my SMA and always used the latest version of Jaws, but once again, that is everybody's choice. All I can say is that is not an issue I have heard about before hence it must be specific to your configuration. I am not usually somebody who says reinstalling Windows from scratch should be your first option, but if you can't or don't want to get a h old of Jaws support to see what they may suggest and if this is a big deal for you otherwise I'd say this maybe an option.

Hi Andrew, i tried that. in jaws 2018, it will let me reactivate using my full licence. it asks me for my actual authorization number. however, when i do this, jaws 2020 is not authorized, as i do not have a valid internet licence for that. this will eliminate the checking and validation of a proper licence, so the problem goes away. i know this, because when i first installed it, it was running in 40 minute mode, and there was absolutely no problem. once i installed the 90 day ilm key, it would not load the jaws window at all after that. as i said, i can quit and restart jaws 2020 and it works fine. i think i am left with two options. one, do as you say and reactivate my jaws 2018 with my old licence and run jaws 2020 in 40 minute mode. two, update to jaws 2020 altogether. if then, the problem goes away, great. if not, i have just wasted the price of an upgrade. regards, pat -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Andrew Summers via groups.io Sent: Sunday 26 April 2020 16:15 To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: jaws 2020 not starting correctly. Hi Dave, Yes, i am on the last version of jaws 2018 which is all i am entitled to. I did use the jaws import wizard to copy my shared settings. I have a 90 day ilm key just to try out jaws 2020. Jaws2020 and jaws2018 are now both authorized using the same 90 day key for some reason. With regards to settings etc, i uninstalled both, reinstalled both, removed both again with all settings and shared components, reinstalled jaws2020, but still the problem exists. One peculiar thing though, i started up my computer yesterday from a shutdown, and everything with jaws2020 worked fine. I did the exact same thing just now, and the problem came back. I am convinced at this stage, that it does have something to do with the new "grace period" authorization function introduced in jaws 2019. I think it is loading before it knows for certain whether or not you have a valid key. Sometimes the check works, and sometimes it doesn't and jaws half loads with no actual jaws window. I also think, that it might have something to do with the ilm key, as this is a very old type of authorization for a pc, as against the internet activation method. However, i am not paying for an upgrade until i can get a definite sort-out for this problem. As i said in another post, there is always nvda, but i would rather stay with jaws. Select Google Chrome from desktop and stays on desktop
kevin meyers
Hello, I’m using the most recent 2020 version of Jaws and Office 2016. I select Google Chrome from my desktop and the cursor remains on the desktop. I thought it didn’t open a Google window. I press enter again and nothing happens. I found out that Google Chrome did open a window and I have to move to the window where as before I would be sitting in the window. Then when I move to the window it says dash Google Chrome. Sometimes I can tab back and forth and I get to the address and search bar. Times I have to close out of Google Chrome. Times I have to move out of the window and then back. This never happened before the most recent version of Jaws. What do I need to stop this from happening? Thanks, Kevin

Re: Message Sent to Zoom Support on Meeting Entry/Exit Notifications
Richard Turner
Hi, So, are the announcements of people entering or leaving considered an alert? Like others, I’ve been thrown into learning zoom. If those are alerts then they can be turned off, but it looks like all alerts will be turned off. This is from pressing insert+h in Zoom with Jaws. .

Hi all,
Below is a message I just sent to Zoom Tech Support. If you agree with my opinion, please take a little time to send them similar requests. It’s more effective if several people speak out.
Regards, David
Hello,
I would like to report on a general problem, not specific to any meeting, and make some suggestions.

Also go into Settings Center and check your Jaws verboscity

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. *My body has absorbed so much soap and disinfectant lately that when I pee it cleans the toilet.

I am a long time OE user andI can't remember ever having this ability at
least in Windows 10, can't remember in Win 7, it has been a long time since I
used Win 7. But you can easyly find out the number of emails in a folder by
going to an email in the folder and it will tell you what number it is in the
total number of emails in the folder. example 1 of 50.
